Sigur Rós #4: yyeeeeeeeessiiiiiilllllllloooww

BIOGRAPHY

Sigur Rós is an Icelandic post-rock band with melodic, classical and minimalist elements. The band is known for its ethereal sound and lead singer Jónsi’s falsetto voice. It has been said that the band draws on the rugged landscapes of their homeland for inspiration for much of their music.

Jón Þór (Jónsi) Birgisson (guitar and vocals), Georg Hólm (bass) and Ágúst Ævar Gunnarsson (drums) formed the group in Reykjavik in August 1994. Their name is taken from Jónsi's younger sister Sigurrós (which when translated into English means 'Victory Rose'), who was born the same day as the band was formed. They soon won a record deal with the local Sugarcubes-owned record label, Bad Taste. In 1997, they released their debut album Von and in 1998 a remix collection named Von brigði. The name is Icelandic wordplay: Vonbrigði means "disappointment", but Von brigði means "hope alteration". The band was joined by Kjartan Sveinsson on keyboards in 1998. He is the only member of Sigur Rós with musical training, and therefore has contributed most of the orchestral and string arrangements for their later work.

After the release of 1999's Ágætis Byrjun, the band became well known for Jónsi's signature style of playing guitar with the bow from a cello, accentuated with reverb, creating a sweeping, fluid sound that is unique for an electric guitar. Drummer Ágúst left the band after the recording of Ágætis Byrjun and was replaced by Orri Páll Dýrason.

In 2002, their highly anticipated follow-up album ( ) was released. Upon release all tracks on the album were untitled, though the band later published song names on their website. All of the lyrics on ( ) are sung in 'Vonlenska', also known as 'Hopelandic', a constructed language of nonsense syllables which resembles the phonology of the Icelandic language.

In 2005 Takk... was released, and the band found more success, especially with the single 'Hoppipola', which was featured in trailers for the BBC series 'Planet Earth' and elsewhere.

A special edition DVD+CD set was released in 2007 entitled Hvarf-Heim, which features new songs, reworked old songs, and live acoustic performances of select songs from all over the band's catalogue.

Sigur rós released their fifth lp "með suð * eyrum við spilum endalaust" june 23rd worldwide (june 24th in north america).

"Með suð I eyrum við spilum endalaust" was co-produced with the band by renowned producer flood, and was recorded in new york city (at sear sound studios), london (at assault and battery studios and abbey road), reykjavik (at álafoss, the band's studio, as well as a church in reykjavik), and havana, cuba.

The album title is translated into english as "with a buzz in our ears we play endlessly" with the english spelling of the icelandic album title being "med sud i eyrum vid spilum endalaust"

Inspired by the unfettered feeling of the acoustic performances filmed during heima, sigur rós decided to adopt a looser approach in the writing and creation of með suð. The material for the album was written, recorded and mixed entirely in 2008 and is being released just one month after its completion. The album glows with the perfect imperfection of live takes, the sounds of fingers playing guitar strings, cracked notes, and a stark, upfront presence not found in previous sigur rós recordings, moving away from reverb-soaked guitar sounds towards something altogether more affecting. The record also contains some of the most joyous music the band has ever recorded.

Ranking Med Sud. I'll come up with mine soon. I'm copying over Simone's and Jose's for comparison.

You used my title! I wonder what those unfamiliar with SR must be thinking when they see it...

I'll try to do my own list too! But for that I have to listen to the album again!
But I don't agree Jose, All alright is not their worst song ever! It's very intimate and I'm not loving it, it's ok, better live actually, but definitely not the worst! DO you actually think that it's worse than avalon on Takk, or most of the songs on Von? I don't!

I don't mind the title, although I can't hear the song when I read the word! Sorry. What song were you thinking of again?

Auré

He used that particular "phrase" a lot, so it could work for a lot of them. 'Vaka' (during the "verses"), #8, and so on.

And I agree that 'All Alright' isn't worse than 'Avalon' or anything on Von. But then, I like it better than some other songs on Med Sud and better then some songs on the other albums too. It's not a favorite, for sure, but still.

Well no, I think 'Avalon' and 'All Alright' are on par with each other, and then the stuff on Von are worse, but I really don't like 'All Alright' - in fact I always skip it when I hear the album. It's just, well, considering it was their first English song and all (therefore making it more hyped up) it's so boring. So the disappointment is greater.

Thanks for that Simone - I was going to ask you where that phrase appeared from!

OK, yeah maybe I had an overreaction. Certainly the stuff of Von is way more disappointing. But I really don't like the song. I don't skip it when listening to the album, but I thought that their first song sung in english would be more memorable.

And DanceWithLife you should post more. I mean, I'm no example because I sometimes disappear for a few days and not post at all, but the more posters the better.

Well, I'm not going to convince you that there is something interesting in All alright, you don't like it, I can live with that! Last thing though, my opinion of it has nothing to do with the fact that it's sung in English, I don't even think about it since I mostly can't understand a thing. I think it's a song where everything stops, time stops. But I agree it's not one of the best on Med Sud!

I haven't managed to rank the songs of Med Sud, but I'm working on it.

Ok, so, by the by: 'Untitled #4' definitely has the phrase from the thread title in it. When he first starts singing. Maybe I didn't need so many e's, but that's the phrase that was in my mind. Is phrase even the right term?

You mean that's how you spell it? that bit of Hopelandic is quite familiar to me because I listen to 'Njosnavelin' a lot, it's one of the ones I know quite well, but never in my life did I think of spelling it that way. Not that it's wrong, but somehow I never thought of spelling Hopelandic at all.

My rankings, as promised!

‘Inni mer’
‘Festival’
‘Vid spilum endalaust’
‘Godan daginn’
‘Fljotavik’
‘Gobbledigook’
‘Med sud i eyrum’
‘Ara batur’
‘Illegresi’
‘All Alright’
‘Straumnes’

'Godan daginn' and 'Vid spilum endalaust' are really close though - I just prefer 'Vid spilum' right now. And both are only just ahead of 'Fljotavik'. Actually I realised that Med Sud is not bad at all as an album, just not as good as their previous ones, and that maybe I'm being too harsh on it. As an album on its own the only songs that are truly disappointing are 'All Alright' and 'Straumnes' (for being instrumental). The rest are good, or OK at least.
