| Sigur Rós #3: With A Buzz In Their Ears They Play Endlessly ![]() BIOGRAPHY Sigur Rós is an Icelandic post-rock band with melodic, classical and minimalist elements. The band is known for its ethereal sound and lead singer Jónsi’s falsetto voice. It has been said that the band draws on the rugged landscapes of their homeland for inspiration for much of their music. Jón Þór (Jónsi) Birgisson (guitar and vocals), Georg Hólm (bass) and Ágúst Ævar Gunnarsson (drums) formed the group in Reykjavik in August 1994. Their name is taken from Jónsi's younger sister Sigurrós (which when translated into English means 'Victory Rose'), who was born the same day as the band was formed. They soon won a record deal with the local Sugarcubes-owned record label, Bad Taste. In 1997, they released their debut album Von and in 1998 a remix collection named Von brigði. The name is Icelandic wordplay: Vonbrigði means "disappointment", but Von brigði means "hope alteration". The band was joined by Kjartan Sveinsson on keyboards in 1998. He is the only member of Sigur Rós with musical training, and therefore has contributed most of the orchestral and string arrangements for their later work. After the release of 1999's Ágætis Byrjun, the band became well known for Jónsi's signature style of playing guitar with the bow from a cello, accentuated with reverb, creating a sweeping, fluid sound that is unique for an electric guitar. Drummer Ágúst left the band after the recording of Ágætis Byrjun and was replaced by Orri Páll Dýrason. In 2002, their highly anticipated follow-up album ( ) was released. Upon release all tracks on the album were untitled, though the band later published song names on their website. All of the lyrics on ( ) are sung in 'Vonlenska', also known as 'Hopelandic', a constructed language of nonsense syllables which resembles the phonology of the Icelandic language. In 2005 Takk... was released, and the band found more success, especially with the single 'Hoppipola', which was featured in trailers for the BBC series 'Planet Earth' and elsewhere. A special edition DVD+CD set was released in 2007 entitled Hvarf-Heim, which features new songs, reworked old songs, and live acoustic performances of select songs from all over the band's catalogue. Sigur rós released their fifth lp "með suð * eyrum við spilum endalaust" june 23rd worldwide (june 24th in north america). "Með suð I eyrum við spilum endalaust" was co-produced with the band by renowned producer flood, and was recorded in new york city (at sear sound studios), london (at assault and battery studios and abbey road), reykjavik (at álafoss, the band's studio, as well as a church in reykjavik), and havana, cuba. The album title is translated into english as "with a buzz in our ears we play endlessly" with the english spelling of the icelandic album title being "med sud i eyrum vid spilum endalaust" Inspired by the unfettered feeling of the acoustic performances filmed during heima, sigur rós decided to adopt a looser approach in the writing and creation of með suð. The material for the album was written, recorded and mixed entirely in 2008 and is being released just one month after its completion. The album glows with the perfect imperfection of live takes, the sounds of fingers playing guitar strings, cracked notes, and a stark, upfront presence not found in previous sigur rós recordings, moving away from reverb-soaked guitar sounds towards something altogether more affecting. The record also contains some of the most joyous music the band has ever recorded. ![]() DISCOGRAPHY CDs Von (1997) Von brigði (1998) Ágætis Byrjun (1999) ( ) (2002) Hlemmur soundtrack (2002) Takk... | Thanks for opening the new thread Jose! A couple things to add to the OP: 'Gobbledigook' and 'Inni Mer...' should be added to the singles, shouldn't they? With a link to the video for 'Gobbledigook'. And that Last Call performance of 'Vaka' should be in the 'Live Performances' section, I think. It's one of my favorites. I'll go find it on youtube... __________________ i don't wrestle alligators icon by anamour @LJ | |||

| There'll definitely be a music video, I hope it's not all naked people though I'd like the next video to be, you know, a little more family-friendly. It was really weird watching the 'Goobledigook' video and praying very hard that no one was watching the video behind me!Thanks for the the new thread by the way. It looks awesome, I love how a post-rock Icelandic band has actually made it to thread #3! You forgot to change the bit about the new album in the writeup though Jose It still says "the forthcoming album", maybe we can write something together.__________________ go easy on me, I can't help what I'm doing | icon | |||

I know what you mean! but it's not like it is porn, it's freedom, peace and love, we're back in the 60's... let's have some pot, and run around naked..... ![]() I actually turned my CD over, showing the titles, because it's sitting downstairs near my dad's CD player! maybe I should put the CD away! Oh, well, it's just naked men and certain male body parts are not exposed there... ![]() Auré __________________ "A painter paints pictures on canvas. But musicians paint their pictures on silence." | You know, I still haven't watched all of SR's music videos. I really should... Their songs are just so long, I need to be in the mode where I want to listen and watch a 10 minute video, you know? I've only seen 'Gobbledigook', 'Hoppipolla', and 'Svefn', actually. Or, I think I saw 'Saeglopur'...but I can't remember. Oh well, I'll have to remedy this soon. __________________ i don't wrestle alligators icon by anamour @LJ

I'm obsessed with Le mystère des voix Bulgares, nothing to do with SR at all. DO you know it? Bulgarian voices, there are 2 songs, I just love, and have in my head all the time!! Can you believe I listen to this more than SR!!! ![]() Auré ETA: Ok, that's weird, I hadn't bothered myself with it before, but can you explain to me why the title of the song is spelled gobbledigook, right? that's what they say on myspace, amazon, a fansite.... and on my album, it says gobbELdigook!!!! Is that a spelling mistake on all CDs? __________________ "A painter paints pictures on canvas. But musicians paint their pictures on silence." I think the only vid of SR I ever watched was Gobbledigook actually. Like Simone said, I really have to be in the mood to watch vids. They are usually quite long. __________________ jose · icon by me

| Nope it's not just you Aure, my CD is spelt 'Gobbeldigook' too. I think it's a mistake (whether on purpose or not I don't know, after all 'Festival' has a cancelled-out thing too). And oh, I do the same! I'm always putting the album face down whenever I take it out. It's a bit embarrassing otherwise ![]() You should really see the other videos Simone and Jose I like the video for 'Vaka'. I can't say I've seen them all though. Don't think I've seen 'Vidrar' for example. Must remedy that when I'm in the mood. Thanks for updating the OP Jose! And Aure I'll listen to the Bulgarian stuff one day maybe ![]() __________________ go easy on me, I can't help what I'm doing | icon | |||

| Auré thanks for the link. I find the music too folkloric for my taste LOL. Is it really spelt that way? LOL, that's weird. Maybe they did it on purpose. There's no way the person who wrote that didn't reread it. ![]() __________________ jose · icon by me | |||

| I think so. The whole of Med Sud (design-wise anyway) has a very handmade feel to it. That's something I've always wanted to ask about actually - why? Is there something about the songs that gives rise to this homemade feel? Or is it just a design decision? __________________ go easy on me, I can't help what I'm doing | icon | |||
