Sigur Rós #2: Because Soon We'll Be Writing Our Posts In Hopelandic!

BIOGRAPHY

Sigur Rós is an Icelandic post-rock band with melodic, classical and minimalist elements. The band is known for its ethereal sound and lead singer Jónsi’s falsetto voice. It has been said that the band draws on the rugged landscapes of their homeland for inspiration for much of their music.

Jón Þór (Jónsi) Birgisson (guitar and vocals), Georg Hólm (bass) and Ágúst Ævar Gunnarsson (drums) formed the group in Reykjavik in August 1994. Their name is taken from Jónsi's younger sister Sigurrós (which when translated into English means 'Victory Rose'), who was born the same day as the band was formed. They soon won a record deal with the local Sugarcubes-owned record label, Bad Taste. In 1997, they released their debut album Von and in 1998 a remix collection named Von brigði. The name is Icelandic wordplay: Vonbrigði means "disappointment", but Von brigði means "hope alteration". The band was joined by Kjartan Sveinsson on keyboards in 1998. He is the only member of Sigur Rós with musical training, and therefore has contributed most of the orchestral and string arrangements for their later work.

After the release of 1999's Ágætis Byrjun, the band became well known for Jónsi's signature style of playing guitar with the bow from a cello, accentuated with reverb, creating a sweeping, fluid sound that is unique for an electric guitar. Drummer Ágúst left the band after the recording of Ágætis Byrjun and was replaced by Orri Páll Dýrason.

In 2002, their highly anticipated follow-up album ( ) was released. Upon release all tracks on the album were untitled, though the band later published song names on their website. All of the lyrics on ( ) are sung in 'Vonlenska', also known as 'Hopelandic', a constructed language of nonsense syllables which resembles the phonology of the Icelandic language.

In 2005 Takk... was released, and the band found more success, especially with the single 'Hoppipola', which was featured in trailers for the BBC series 'Planet Earth' and elsewhere.

A special edition DVD+CD set was released in 2007 entitled Hvarf-Heim, which features new songs, reworked old songs, and live acoustic performances of select songs from all over the band's catalogue.

In late February 2008 it was reported at Sigur Rós' official site that the band, together with producer Flood, has recorded the foundation of the forthcoming album. The album is said to be stylistically different, featuring fewer strings and more guitar.

Yeah we really do. I'll go to the sigur rós comm at LJ. See if I can find something.

YAY! I CAN'T BELIEVE THIS IS OUR 2ND THREAD. Who would've thought we'd be able to fill one.

Quote:
A glockenspiel is similar to a xylophone - I'm not sure if it's the exact same thing but with a different name, or whether they're exactly the same. No matter. Anyway an example would be in 'No Surprises'.
Oh. I didn't know that sound was produced by a glockenspiel. I always thought those were xylophones. Los Campesinos! also use it a lot then.

Quote:
I haven't listened to much Sigur Ros these days (I blame you) so I can't say much though.
Haha. It's like the day has not have enough hours to handle our insatiable thirst for music.

Great!! Thanks José!
I know, I can't believe we made it!

I had heard about the glockenspiel before, but did not know they used it in Saeglopur.

Remember when we talked about Ba ba Ti ki Do do and I told you the 3 songs were to be played simultaneously, well I found it on youtube. so you can listen to it!
YouTube - Ba Ba Ti Ki Di Do (Song)- Sigur Ros
I like it, it's very similar to Riceboy sleeps the group formed by Jonsi and his boyrfriend Alex if I'm not mistaken.

What do you want to put in the 1st post?

I can't believe it either! It's amazing. I never thought a thread about a band so avant garde would actually have enough posts to have a second thread, but guys, we did it!

Well like I said I'm not sure if they're two names for the same thing or slightly different objects but hey, doesn't quite matter does it? Since I doubt none of us are going to be forming bands anytime soon... and I'm not sure if they use it in 'Saeglopur', I just think so. I haven't seen a concert video for the song yet.

Exactly!

I'm not sure about the OP, generally people put pictures, a bit about the band, each album, useful links, artwork - that's what we did for the Radiohead thread, but nowadays I seem to favour a neat-looking OP, so something not so long.

Am listening to 'Ba Ba Ti Ki Do Do' now, it's very calming isn't it? And I can hear a bit of spoken vocals in bursts of static, OH, now I hear the piano - it's so pretty.

Listen to Ba ba ti ki di do. It's really.... weird. I like it, but it's different. Let me think about what we can put on the OP. :d

I wouldn't say it's entirely different from their usual stuff - it's not like they've gone post-punk or something ( at the thought) but it's different, yes.

OP, OP... I guess we could use Wikipedia or the official site for a biography of the band

HAHA. Well, yeah it's STILL Sigur Rós you know, but the whole composition is quite messy, don't you think? The way the 3 songs intertwine together is really weird, at least IMO.

Yeah.

Don't have much time right now to think about the OP, but I'm sure that we can find all the CDs on a few sites, rearrange the presentation, find some quotes from magazines, some pics from concerts with the e-bow or when he's singing in his guitare and it's done!

I've been listening to Riceboy sleeps a lot, I mentionned it the other day, but I don't know if you've listened to it already: MySpace.com - Riceboy Sleeps - Reykjavík - Ambient / Visual - www.myspace.com/riceboysleeps
love the vid of Daniell in the sea

I agree, Baba... is different, i'm not sure i would listen to it very often, but it's still better the three together than each piece individually

Ooh, thread #2!

OP... hmm, yeah, a picture, a little bio, maybe youtube links to some videos and perfromances, and a discography could all make it look a little more impressive. The basic work-up, really.

I don't know about the messiness, but OK, I can't quite remember so I'll take your word for it

Anybody want to get started on the OP, then? I would but I've been spending way too much time listening to Mark Kermode's film reviews I'll also listen to Riceboy Sleeps later. But I did listen to AB last night as I lay in bed. It was quite wonderful.

This might be a bit too wordy, I just cut and pasted most of it from Wikipedia. It's a starting point, at least. Feel free to cut it down more, correct it, whatever you want...

Hey, there's no mention in that biography of Takk..., that's a surprise. Anyway, thanks for the link. I'm afraid I don't have anything to contribute though, I haven't really watched many SR YouTube performances or things like that.

Oh and about 'Viðrar Vel Til Loftárása', right... I know you guys love it, but until yesterday I always thought of it as one of those songs that were OK but not fantastic, chiefly because I couldn't remember how it sounded like. So last night I took time out to listen to it and I realised it's REALLY GOOD. I love it.

Takk is mentioned in the third to last paragraph.

And I'm glad you've seen the light!
