Radiohead #9: They Make Us Fitter, Happier And More Productive

Welcome to the

Banner by Forgotten By The Sun

Well, Radiohead aren't a band that require much introduction, but in case you happen to be living under a rock all these years, here is an overview, of sorts:

Radiohead are a British band from Oxfordshire, England, comprised of five musicians. Though often classed as alternative rock, they have been deeply influenced by music from a variety of genres. Radiohead is often praised as one of the most creative bands of their era, known for their multilayered songs and artistic evolution from album to album. They are seen by many to have maintained musical and political independence despite recording for a major label.

They first broke into the music scene with the album Pablo Honey, containing the hit single 'Creep', a song about low self-esteem and self-hatred that many listeners could identify with. The song was so huge, in fact, that critics wrote the band off as one-hit wonders - a label that seemed to have weight after subsequent singles such as 'Pop Is Dead' were savaged by critics. However, Radiohead bounced back in the form of their second album, The Bends in 1995 - a much more mature-sounding rock album that spawned Radiohead's highest-ranked single on the British charts, 'Street Spirit (Fade Out)'. Two years later came what many people have hailed their best album, OK Computer - an album that has made many "Greatest Albums" lists. Some have also derided their work for its bleakness and lack of instant accessibility - in part due to the double dose of nihilism in the next two albums Kid A and Amnesiac, but it is also proof of the band's willingness to experiment and explore the boundaries of rock. With their sixth album, Hail to the Thief, Radiohead brought guitars back into the picture while still incorporating experimental and electronic beats, thus creating a sort of synthesis of their previous five records.

On October 10, 2007, Radiohead released their latest album, In Rainbows. The band made headlines for the method of the release: a digitial download that buyers could choose the price of, even if that meant paying nothing. It was also available as a special edition Discbox with artwork, vinyls, and bonus songs. We at the Radiohead thread are happy to announce that In Rainbows is an excellent album, well worth the four year wait. The album was released via traditional means in January 2008.

Thom has a solo album, The Eraser, however he does not like to refer to it as a solo album and says he is not splitting up with the band - much to the relief of fans everywhere! Jonny also has worked on solo projects, including the soundtrack to Bodysong and There Will Be Blood. In addition, he works as the BBC’s composer in residence.

Radiohead are (L-R):

Ed O'Brien (guitar, harmony vocals, special effects, percussion)
Phil Selway (drums and percussion)
Thom Yorke (lead vocals, rhythm guitar, piano, electronic programming)
Jonny Greenwood (lead guitar, keyboard, ondes martenot, electronic programming, string arrangements, various)
Colin Greenwood (bass, keyboards)

I know, I'm excited for you! Eek! If you want you could give me your mobile number and I could help you monitor, I'm free for the next, er, hour. Actually no. I just realised it's kind of pointless, one hour - but hey, I tried and later tonight I can help you check too. So it's up to you. But it's so exciting! I really, REALLY want you to go.

I keep considering putting in Return of the King to pass the time, since it's so long. I think that's what I'll do at midnight.

I MAY be seeing Radiohead in June...

Yay! New freakin' thread. Love the title. *puts robotic voice* Not drinking too much.

If I have time (a thing I'm lacking of lately ) I'll open my freakin' account at waste. In the meanting maybe I could add you guys at LJ. I'm josebajm too there. I fill my LJ with crappy stuff about my life, and my obsessions (that is: GA, Kyle XY, partying and indie music -no one comments everytime I talk about music lmao, so I really need peeps who appreciate the same style of music on my f-list-).

Oh, my mom does not like Radiohead at all, but likes bands like New Order, The Cure and Joy Division, so she rules for that.

I second that. I wanna be all 'OMG, SHE DID IT AGAIN, AND BETTER!'

Yeah, new thread! It makes me all happy too. And go sign up! It takes, what, 5 minutes? Go do it now oh and I don't have an LJ... used to, but I got rid of it!

Your mother sounds quite awesome. My mother likes Lobo. And Barry Manilow. And a bit of Coldplay. Oh dear. She hardly listens to music though.

You should do one too! I can't be bothered, it seems way too difficult, but it's always fun to peruse other people's lists

You can add my LJ if you like Joseba, there's a link somewhere or other in my signature

My Mum like Coldplay a lot. She's actually quite receptive to me playing her new things. I normally have to play them first just saying "here's a song you might like" before I say what it's called or who it's by because she finds modern band names so amusing she'd be too busy giggling and not listening. I have to say, though, I have never and probably will never try any Radiohead out on her, especially after her reaction to 'Nude'

But what kind of music does she like, maybe she'll like another song... oh and Sylv I know I keep asking but which date are you going for? I forgot! If I lived in a perfect world I want to go for the 25th date so I could meet a friend but they're all sold out aren't they!

Oh and WHERE THE **** ARE YOU SIMONE?! 2nd leg tickets are ON SALE! (Actually they've been on sale for half an hour? More? But still).

Added you Sylv.

OK, I have to do two things before I go to bed. 1. Download Agaetis Byrjun by Sigur Rós and 2. open my account at waste.

I'm going on the 25th

She likes Travis a lot, and Ash. Also.... *thinks* a bit of Feeder, Bright Eyes, Blur, basically your fairly easy listening indie Whatever the most easy listening Radiohead track is I could try that!

YAY! That's awesome Simone!

I haven't even looked at my w.a.s.t.e account since I first opened it, I suppose I ought to go do something with it. I did badger Mr S into signing up at least

So, anyone got any thoughts on the most easy listening Radiohead track for me to play to my Mum and not tell her who it's by?

Joseba - I added you back! Did you get Sigur Rós? I love that album even if it does remind me of my ex boyfriend

Sorry for the OT but yeah I did. But I haven't listened to it yet. I will when I have time. But I'm quite busy right now.

OMG yay Simone! So excited for you! How much of an agony was it? And how long did you have to wait? My friend was trying to get tickets for another friend, she actually got tickets but the page timed out and the tickets were released

Agaetis Bryjun is amazing but recently I have come to the conclusion that Takk is better. Well I've been in a super Sigur Ros mood, been listening to nothing but them for the past 3 days... go listen to it when you have the time Joseba! You will not regret it.

Go do something on w.a.s.t.e central then Sylv Wait, do I have you as a friend? I don't remember. Also - most easy listening? I suppose it's either 'High and Dry', 'House of Cards' and 'Punchup' maybe (ignore subject matter). Yeah, probably these three.
