| Radiohead#6: The 'In Rainbows' Discbox-- It's like Christmas come early! Welcome to the ![]() ![]() Banner by Forgotten By The Sun Well, Radiohead aren't a band that require much introduction, but in case you happen to be living under a rock all these years, here is an overview, of sorts: Radiohead are a British band from Oxfordshire, England, comprised of five musicians. Though often classed as alternative rock, they have been deeply influenced by music from a variety of genres. Radiohead is often praised as one of the most creative bands of their era, known for their multilayered songs and artistic evolution from album to album. They are seen by many to have maintained musical and political independence despite recording for a major label. They first broke into the music scene with the album Pablo Honey, containing the hit single 'Creep', a song about low self-esteem and self-hatred that many listeners could identify with. The song was so huge, in fact, that critics wrote the band off as one-hit wonders - a label that seemed to have weight after subsequent singles such as 'Pop Is Dead' were savaged by critics. However, Radiohead bounced back in the form of their second album, The Bends in 1995 - a much more mature-sounding rock album that spawned Radiohead's highest-ranked single on the British charts, 'Street Spirit (Fade Out)'. Two years later came what many people have hailed their best album, OK Computer - an album that has made many "Greatest Albums" lists. Some have also derided their work for its bleakness and lack of instant accessibility - in part due to the double dose of nihilism in the next two albums Kid A and Amnesiac, but it is also proof of the band's willingness to experiment and explore the boundaries of rock. Their sixth album, Hail To The Thief - controversy still reigns over whether the title alludes to American president George Bush winning the presidency, though the band has denied it - is seen to be a link, of sorts, between OK Computer and the next two albums, yet it is an album that has its distinct sound (a feature of all Radiohead albums). On 10th October 2007, Radiohead released their newest album, In Rainbows. It is currently only available on the band's website in two versions: a limited-edition Discbox which includes bonus material and artwork as well, and as a digital download file available for whatever price the buyer chooses. This has been seen as an unprecedented move by the music industry, with the result of this being a very high-profile release despite the lack of promotion in general. However, this has not detracted from the music itself - we at the Radiohead thread are happy to announce that it is a very, very good album, and that we are waiting rather impatiently for 3rd December, when the made-to-order Discboxes will be shipped out. It is speculated that the album will be released via the traditional means some time in early 2008. Thom has a solo album, The Eraser, however he does not like to refer to it as a solo album and says he is not splitting up with the band - much to the relief of fans everywhere! Jonny also has worked on solo projects, including the soundtrack to Bodysong and the upcoming There Will Be Blood. In addition, he works as the BBC’s composer in residence. Radiohead are (L-R): ![]() Ed O'Brien (guitar, harmony vocals, special effects, percussion) Phil Selway (drums and percussion) Thom Yorke (lead vocals, rhythm guitar, piano, electronic programming) Jonny Greenwood (lead guitar, keyboard, ondes martenot, electronic programming, string arrangements, various) Colin Greenwood (bass, keyboards) ![]() Banner by 4N6 DNA Several sites: Radiohead.com Dead Air Space Wikipedia page Green Plastic At Ease Citizen Insane Piemerica Radiohead's music videos, in order of release: 'Creep' Missing 'Anyone Can Play Guitar' video 'Pop Is Dead' 'Stop Whispering' Missing 'The Bends' video. | You rock! Thanks for the new thread. Anyway, I was watching some of the webcast - so far I've seen: 1. 'Reckoner' - pretty! This was one of the songs I've been dying to see the band perform live, just to see who plays all the shakers and stuff. And it was great! No strings, but still very pretty. Even if the audio and video were a bit out of sync. It's not everyday that you see Jonny play three instruments in one song love the song, and ha! It was so much easier to hear the lyrics! 2. 'Jisgaw Falling into Place' - STUPID HELMETS! (sorry, That '70s Show reference). Err. It was great! The song was great, and they're completely crazy. No wonder Thom said they were doing a lot of stupid things over the past few weeks. I mean, helmets? Anybody who thinks they're a bunch of depressives should really see this video.3. 'Faust Arp' - again, a bit lacking without the strings but it's a nice acoustic number. And the setting was just perfect. Jonny and Thom playing 'Faust Arp' in the early morning with the sun rising behind them - perfection. 4. Random bits at the end, on the webcast channel - hahahaha did you see Phil being all silly when Colin was at the decks? These guys are so great, they're just so silly and fun-loving. Music was good, too, but I didn't recognise it (not surprisingly). 'IMBW' was not bad. Not that great, but not bad. Sounded a bit thrashy. And is that the Vapourbrothers thing at the end? 5. '15 Step' - Se7en reference? Am off to watch 'Bodysnatchers' next. What else do I need to look for? __________________ go easy on me, I can't help what I'm doing | icon | |||

| Well, I thought their Smiths cover was good (but I've never listened to the Smiths, so...). And they played another cover song called "Ceremony" that I am also unfamiliar with, but that is supposedly very good (I can't say from my own experience since I missed it too). I hope it's ok that I tweaked the OP a bit-- I added a couple more banners, since 4N6 DNA made some for us and they're good, so I thought they should be included. __________________ i don't wrestle alligators icon by anamour @LJ | |||

| The OP is fine Just watched 'Bodysnatchers'. I have a newfound appreciation for the fuzz guitars (Thom's?) - not sure why I don't like 'Myxomatosis' but like this. I guess I'm just odd the guy in the mask, is that Adam? at the Ed bit. 9 feet tall and needs an oxygen mask to survive the high altitudes, heh. Now I'm going to watch the Headmaster Ritual thing (which is the Smiths cover), yay! Hopefully MT will be kind and will provide more videos throughout the day.I don't love The Smiths, they're okay... and I only know one Joy Division and one New Order song. You can find 'Ceremony' at MT! It's on YouTube, I think. But I haven't watched it yet. __________________ go easy on me, I can't help what I'm doing | icon | |||

| 'Bodysnatchers' isn't nearly as fuzzed as 'Myxomatosis', so it's not that weird that you'd like one and not the other...not that I really understand your not liking 'Myxomatosis'... ![]() I'll probably check videos out tomorrow on youtube. I'm about to go have dinner and watch a movie, so...yeah. I wonder if Pauline caught the webcast. __________________ i don't wrestle alligators icon by anamour @LJ | |||

| Pah. I can't really explain why. It jabs at the ear somewhat. Am at 'The Headmaster's Ritual' now. It sounds like The Smiths, it's their distinctive sound. Radiohead don't sound half bad doing it though. Ooh, a movie and dinner. Have fun! I shall watch the videos, although they seem to have dried up never mind, there's always 'Jigsaw' to entertain myself with I don't know! I hope she did. Or there's always YouTube anyway. __________________ go easy on me, I can't help what I'm doing | icon | |||

| Which ones, specifically? Am re-watching 'Jigsaw'. I love Thom's intro. Is that Jonny prodding him with the stick? and I love how the camera is grooving to the beat. Oh wow, these guys are completely insane. I love them. ![]() __________________ go easy on me, I can't help what I'm doing | icon | |||

| Um... well, I really want the covers and 'Faust Arp'. Although I quite liked the 'IMBW' perfromance too... Basically, eventually, all of them. But now I say goodbye for a couple hours at least, who knows if you'll be around when I return! ![]() __________________ i don't wrestle alligators icon by anamour @LJ | |||

| I must get that video of the 'Jigsaw' performance. It's just too funny (although in a rather juvenile way, but who cares!). I vote for this webcast performance to be the official video! Okay! I don't know if I'll still be around, but it's been a pleasure rambling about the videos with you. Even if this comes a few hours late. ![]() __________________ go easy on me, I can't help what I'm doing | icon | |||

| The movie I watched was Me And You And Everyone We Know and I swear you used to have an icon from that movie...with the shoes that said 'me' and 'you' on them. Am I right? Anyway, I 'd at the part of the webcast where Adam and Thom were talking about how Thom is "re-branding". He doesn't want people to think of him as being so miserable anymore. And totally unrelated to the webcast, but I just stumbled across this cover of 'Morning Bell' and wanted to know what you thought... I've never heard a 'Morning Bell' cover before. | First off, at the icon. That Se7en spoof was rather freaky! And secondly, nope, don't think I've used that icon before. Are you sure that was me? Oh yeah the 'rebranding' bit. It's true though, everyone thinks of him as pretty much suicidal and he isn't at all! Well, a jerk yes, but depressed no. I've seen that one before. Wanted to put it here, actually, but I forgot about it. Anyway, I love it! It's so completely different - never thought Radiohead could be done bluegrass-style, but apparently it can. I remember liking it a lot. Will have to re-watch it again though, I can't remember what happened. Later ![]() Okay so more of webcast. Did you like Ed's Tender Moment? You know, watching that made me realise he really does have quite a nice voice. Because we don't hear him speak that often. And the camera playing with the settings - that was done on purpose, the way Ed (again!) was heckled during his reading of The Polar Express in the 2002 webcast, right? And the way Jonny was poking Thom with the stick before 'Reckoner'. These guys are great, seriously. They don't take themselves seriously at all. Also, I was watching 'Faust Arp' and 'Reckoner' again and those two are amazing haven't watched 'Videotape' yet though. And I liked 'Unravel' from the testcast. Oh, how were the DJ-ing segments? Were they good? They don't have those on YouTube yet. Also, can I say I love MT? They've got almost everything up. Bless them!__________________ go easy on me, I can't help what I'm doing | icon | |||
