Radiohead #3: I thought you were a happy-go-lucky American band. Imagine my surprise.

Well, Radiohead aren't a band that require much introduction, but in case you happen to be living under a rock all these years, here is an overview, of sorts:

Radiohead are a British band from Oxfordshire, England, comprised of five musicians. Though often classed as alternative rock, they have been deeply influenced by music from a variety of genres. Radiohead is often praised as one of the most creative bands of their era, known for their multilayered songs and artistic evolution from album to album. They are seen by many to have maintained musical and political independence despite recording for a major label. They first broke into the music scene with the album Pablo Honey, containing the hit single 'Creep', a song about low self-esteem and self-hatred that many listeners could identify with. The song was so huge, in fact, that critics wrote the band off as one-hit wonders - a label that seemed to have weight after subsequent singles such as 'Pop Is Dead' were savaged by critics. However, Radiohead bounced back in the form of their second album, The Bends in 1995 - a much more mature-sounding rock album that spawned Radiohead's highest-ranked single on the British charts, 'Street Spirit (Fade Out)'. Two years later came what many people have hailed their best album, OK Computer - an album that has made many "Greatest Albums" lists. Some have also derided their work for its bleakness and lack of instant accessibility - in part due to the double dose of nihilism in the next two albums Kid A and Amnesiac, but it is also proof of the band's willingness to experiment and explore the boundaries of rock. Their most recent album, Hail To The Thief - controvesy still reigns over whether the title alludes to American president George Bush winning the presidency, the band has denied it - is seen to be a link, of sorts, between OK Computer and the next two albums, yet it is an album that has its distinct sound (a feature of all Radiohead albums). Thom has a solo album, The Eraser, however he does not call it a solo album and says he is not splitting up with the band - much to the relief of fans everywhere! They also have a live album, I Might Be Wrong - Live Recordings and are currently working on a new album, set to be released sometime in 2007.

Radiohead are (L-R):

Ed O'Brien (guitar, harmony vocals, special effects, percussion)
Phil Selway (drums and percussion)
Thom Yorke (lead vocals, rhythm guitar, piano, electronic programming)
Jonny Greenwood (lead guitar, keyboard, ondes martenot, electronic programming, string arrangements, various)
Colin Greenwood (bass, keyboards)

Several sites:
Radiohead.com
Dead Air Space
Wikipedia page
Green Plastic
At Ease

Radiohead's music videos, in order of release:
'Creep'
Missing 'Anyone Can Play Guitar' video
'Pop Is Dead'
'Stop Whispering'
Missing 'The Bends' video.
'My Iron Lung'. I'm not sure if this is the real video. I think so.
'Street Spirit'
'Just'
'Fake Plastic Trees'
'High and Dry'
'Paranoid Android'
'Karma Police'
'No Surprises'
'Pyramid Song'
'I Might Be Wrong'. No idea if this and 'Pyramid Song' are the correct videos, but I'm assuming so.
'Knives Out'
'There There'
'Go To Sleep'
Missing '2+2=5' video

-

Damn, the thread title is too long to have aprostrophes. Grr! And Pauline, I made a mistake earlier - it is a different version. I didn't listen to it closely at first and I like 'Drunkk Machine'. Does it have The in the title? It does sound like it's drunk

New thread!

Gwen, I know, at first, I wasn't sure if it was a live either. It's hard to guess since we don't hear the audience... They were probably too amazed to make any sound!
And clearly, the drunkk machine (I think there's a the! ) is one of the Radiohead/Thom Yorke's weirdest songs ever, but it's really great... again!

Simone, what an impressing list! I might ask you some more of these songs one day ... But right now, I have discovered so much new bands and singers over the last couple of days (ahhhh the beauty of internet!), it makes me sad there are only 24 hours a day! Vacations are always so busy!

I changed the pictures because I didn't want to steal bandwidth, I hope you like them!

Simone I'm going to be knocking on your door soon which are your particular favourites?

Pauline What bands are these? Yeah I have tons of other songs I have to listen to, but I keep going back to Radiohead Well it's not that weird - drunk, but not weird. It reminds me of 'Skip Divided' actually. Both are talk-y songs, but that was more, err, whisper-y. Did that make sense?

Gwen, I love the new pictures you put in the first post, the first one is hilarious! (and... scary at the same time... )

Quote:
Pauline What bands are these?
uhmmm... ready? I'll just mention the ones in the last 2days, otherwise, it's just never going to end: Fishbone (yes, only now, I'm stupid!) Mika, Tim Curran, AaRON (that's French) Firecrackers (again, French, they live right next to where I live) Mat Kearney... I think that's it... for now. Who knows what will happen in the next days?

I so know how you feel, these days, I guess thanks to all of our talks around here, I'm such in a huge Radiohead mood. For a long time, Hail to the Thief was an album I didn't listen to much, don't know why, I was just not really in the mood. I can now announce that I'm officially reconcilied with it! These days, I'm so into There There, Sail me to the moon, and A wolfe at the door. And I just found out that HTTT is a great album to put me to sleep! (well, yeah, I have a weird definition of "lullaby" ) My only concern is that I never get to hear A wolfe at the door, I'm already gone by then!

Thanks! I think it's cute, though. And I love that second picture, it's so, well, nice. Although it'd be better if we could see Jonny's face. But then again the hair thing is such a trademark. Speaking of Jonny, I've finally admitted to myself that I have, err, a crush on him. Yes, Jonathan [whatever his middle name is] Greenwood. I don't know how it happened - probably in stages since I saw him be a maniac (a cute one, though!) with the auxillary drums in 'There There'. And I happen to think he's hotter than Ed. The cheekbones! Of course none of Radiohead are truly photogenic and jaw-droppingly hot but they do have their good moments and when they do Jonny is the best, and I cannot believe I just spent a paragraph talking about how Jonny is hot, I am a freak I am.

My only consolation is that when I put this picture as my MSN display picture my cousin and my friend both thought he was hot, too.

Onto more serious things so I can regain my dignity? Yes.

Wow I don't know a single band there Matt Kearny is familiar sounding though. Ah yeah that happens, but then you fall in love with Radiohead even more and your head just wants to explode at how much you love them.

About HTTT, yeah I think that's a very, very underrated album. Someone on Amazon.com said that it's such a shame that it's by Radiohead because if it was by anyone other than Radiohead it'd be called a masterpiece, but compared to the likes of OK Computer it's just not so good. It's because while HTTT has incredible, incredible songs, as a whole it doesn't flow so well. Quite a shame, really. But I love the songs you've mentioned - 'A Wolf At The Door' is a favourite, as is 'Sail To The Moon' (and I love the alternative title as well 'Brush The Cobwebs Out of the Sky', it's so pretty!). And I love 'Where I End And You Begin' and 'Scatterbrain' and the whole album probably, with the exception of 'Myaxomatosis'...

I know what you mean, I've listened to Amnesiac and HTTT before and fallen asleep - I don't think it's the music so much as that you're tired and listening to music in bed is a nice way to go to sleep.

And, LISTEN UP - I've got the entire Spitting Feathers album. Yes. So Pauline leave me your email address and I'll send the songs to the both of you ASAP. It's good. And I change my mind: the weirdest Thom song by far is 'Iluvya'

Ooh yay! I've been wanting Spitting Feathers...

And Mat Kearney has had several songs on Grey's Anatomy this season. He's pretty catchy. And he comes from the town I'm going to school in!

Really? That's cool - what kind of music does he sing?

I'll be sending it right along, I'm just waiting for Pauline to give me her email address. I figured it's easier to send it to the both of you at the same time. Will probably flood both of your accounts with emails

Uhmm... Can I be completly stupid and ask what is Spitting Feathers? Well, send it anyway, I'm always up for some more Radiohead songs! I'll send you a PM in a sec..

Gwen, your speech on Johnny made me laugh so much!

Sort of pop, on some songs, there's a little bit of rap (on the songs that I like the less, of course! ) I wouldn't listen to it all the time, but it's nice at times!

I totally agree with you about HTTT, actually this is how I feel for Pablo Honey as well. (but that's more because PH has a different kind of music than the other albums)

Spitting Feathers is Thom's Japan-only release and it has 'The Drunkk Machine' in it. In fact I've labelled it under Spitting Feathers rather than Harrowdown Hill Incidentally, what is with Radiohead and releasing Japan-only albums? Why Japan? These people like Hello Kitty and other kawaii things, they're the last people I'd expect to love Radiohead. Err, I am being horribly racist but who cares, I'm Chinese (well, Singaporean but my race is Chinese)...err I don't know what my point was there but yeah. Any Japanese person reading this is free to insult me.

I do believe that's the first time I've ever fangirled Radiohead

But Thom rapped on 'A Wolf At The Door' (well, sort of) and it was nice - but I know what you mean

Wow, thank you so much for these songs [g]Gwen[/g], they are just... amazing! I'm listenning to them at the moment, and picture me here: I'm alone in front of my computer, this is getting late, it's dark around, and there's just this music. Wow, so fitting! I love Harrowdown Hill, I love the way Thom sings, his voice goes up and down, and I like that there are computer sounds, but guitars as well. It's better when they mix genres in my opinion.
and errr... Iluvya, weird? don't know what you're talking about!

Gwen, you really make me want to move in Japan, you know?

BTW, does any of you know Team Sleep? it reminds me of Radiohead... a little, cause they don't really use computers much, at least, not as much as Radiohead. But I was listenning to Starring at the Queen, and it reminded me of Radiohead. It's Chino Moreno's side project (the Deftones singer, and I hate the Deftones, so it's just amazing he made me love his new band that much!) do you guys know it? just curious...

Hee, thanks! I told my friend I wanted the album and then he downloaded it and sent it to me, and when I got it I thought of the two of you first. I dunno, the fact that 'Iluvya' is him singing just that line - and it's very hard to hear it anyway - it's nice but I think it's weirdly nice. I do love the album though. But I think the shorter 'Harrowdown Hill' is better than the longer one? Like the longer one doesn't add much to the song IMO.

Ha, I see the No Surprises/Running Up Hills Japan-only CD and I wanted to get it but it was $40+ and that is insane. But I don't want to live in Japan though and the voice, yes - the way he sings I want you to get out / and make it work in 'Atoms for Peace' is incredible. Go get the album already!

I haven't heard of that band...

Actually Iluvya reminds me of a Björk song, I can't remember the name of it, but I know it's on Homogenic, my favorite album from her () So that's probably one sign of weirdness! Her voice sounds like Thom's on that song...

Quote:

Well, you know what? Right now, I'm in vacation, but for once, yesterday, I got out of my town and went to the city where I'm going to school, I went shopping. there's no cd store there, but there's a huge supermarket, that has usually all the latest CDs, I knew they had the Eraser, I saw it one day there, except that I had no money back then. And yesterday, I HAD taken money, I thought I'd get it, I went happily to the CDs section... no Thom Yorke! Which means that now, I have to go to a "real" cd store, the closest is an hour away, and now, everyone in my family works like crazy, so we won't have time to get there... and yes, all of this ramble to say... I'm desperate. Ask my mother, she was with me in that store, I must have been really annoying to complain that much!
I want to move out of this town, that's official.

Wow, 40 dollars? it's crazy! and then they complain about everyone downloading music... yeah, sure, that makes perfect sense...

I have a few Bjork songs, she's alright. 'Bachelor' and 'Human Behaviour' is cute. Not sure about the voice though.

Look, if you want I could send you the songs, it's not a problem then you could take your time to buy the album if you want. And I'm quite glad I live in Singappore where you can travel the length of the country by car in 45 minutes and even the CD shops in 'town' is like 1 hour by train?

Oh! You know the In The Basement CD, which is a collection of different artistes playing songs in some basement? And Thom was performing 'Down is the new Up' and 'Videotape'? Well I have them. I didn't buy the CD but anyway I have those two on .mp4 format (which can be played on iPod Videos and QuickTime), as well as the Jonathan Ross interview/performance of 'There There' and 'Fake Plastic Trees'. So if you want them, say so and I'll send them over!
