Radiohead #12: Because Everybody's Listening In

Welcome to the

Banner by Forgotten By The Sun

Well, Radiohead aren't a band that require much introduction, but in case you happen to have been living under a rock all these years, here is an overview, of sorts:

Radiohead are a British band from Oxfordshire, England, comprised of five musicians. Though often classed as alternative rock, they have been deeply influenced by music from a variety of genres. Radiohead is often praised as one of the most creative bands of their era, known for their multilayered songs and artistic evolution from album to album. They are seen by many to have maintained musical and political independence despite recording for a major label.

They first broke into the music scene with the album Pablo Honey, containing the hit single 'Creep', a song about low self-esteem and self-hatred that many listeners could identify with. The song was so huge, in fact, that critics wrote the band off as one-hit wonders - a label that seemed to have weight after subsequent singles such as 'Pop Is Dead' were savaged by critics. However, Radiohead bounced back in the form of their second album, The Bends in 1995 - a much more mature-sounding rock album that spawned Radiohead's highest-ranked single on the British charts, 'Street Spirit (Fade Out)'. Two years later came what many people have hailed their best album, OK Computer - an album that has made many "Greatest Albums" lists. Some have also derided their work for its bleakness and lack of instant accessibility - in part due to the double dose of nihilism in the next two albums Kid A and Amnesiac, but it is also proof of the band's willingness to experiment and explore the boundaries of rock. With their sixth album, Hail to the Thief, Radiohead brought guitars back into the picture while still incorporating experimental and electronic beats, thus creating a sort of synthesis of their previous five records.

On October 10, 2007, Radiohead released their latest album, In Rainbows. The band made headlines for the method of the release: a digitial download that buyers could choose the price of, even if that meant paying nothing. It was also available as a special edition Discbox with artwork, vinyls, and bonus songs. We at the Radiohead thread are happy to announce that In Rainbows is an excellent album, well worth the four year wait. The album was released via traditional means in January 2008.

Thom has a solo album, The Eraser, however he does not like to refer to it as a solo album and says he is not splitting up with the band - much to the relief of fans everywhere! Jonny also has worked on solo projects, including the soundtrack to Bodysong and There Will Be Blood. In addition, he works as the BBC’s composer in residence.

Radiohead are (L-R):

Ed O'Brien (guitar, harmony vocals, special effects, percussion)
Phil Selway (drums and percussion)
Thom Yorke (lead vocals, rhythm guitar, piano, electronic programming)
Jonny Greenwood (lead guitar, keyboard, ondes martenot, electronic programming, string arrangements, various)
Colin Greenwood (bass, keyboards)

Thanks Jose!

Don't forget to add the link to the old thread:
Radiohead #11: We're on a roll!

For Gwen: You need to add these to your video post--High and Dry UK version
House of Cards
Reckoner

(These are all from uk.youtube though so I don't know if that works for you, since 'Glosoli' didn't). Also, is there an offical video for '2+2=5'? I can't find one anywhere, so maybe there wasn't one. I don't think there was one for 'The Bends' either. (You mention these both in the video post, so that's why I'm responding to them).

And I still think it would be fun to add a couple of our favorite live performance videos to the OP too. Since Gwen was kind enough to gather all the videos in one post for us, I shall go gather some live performances and then we can just post a link to the post in the OP, like we do with the videos.

Thanks for the new thread!

Also - I can't edit my video post, unfortunately. I can't edit single posts since I don't have mod-ly capabilities. I'll have to re-do that post but you can understand why I'm a bit lazy to do it now! In the holidays when I'm more free, OK?

Live versions... I'll go hunting. Yay! But you do realise that you'll have the same "can't edit post" problem I have, right?

Hmm... well... I'll be able to edit if I remember the thread the post is in, right? If I go back to the post in its proper form, not as a single? The single post will make it easier for viewing, but if I just remember that it's on page 1 in thread 12, I'll be able to edit it, right? Or are posts impossible to edit once a thread has closed? Is that the problem? In which case, we could always add all the links to the OP instead.

Paranoid Android on Jools Holland 1997
How To Disappear Completely at Canal+, Paris 2001
There There live at Glastonbury 2003
2+2=5 live at Glastonbury 2003
Lucky live at Glatsonbury 2003
Fake Plastic Trees live at Glastonbury 2003
Idioteque live at Eurockeenes 2003
The Gloaming live at Eurockeenes 2003
Kid A live at Eurockeenes 2003
You and Whose Army? live at 93 Feet East
Weird Fishes/Arpeggi on Jools Holland 2008

Yeah, so...I really like Glastonbury and Eurockeenes. I tried to just pick performances I thought were particularly good, and it was hard because both shows are amazing. So, any other performances from them that you think should be included, let me know. And any other shows, webcasts, etc. too of course...

And these are all uk.youtube, so do they work for you Gwen?

I don't know about that. What I was thinking was that maybe we could add all these links (both music video and live performances) to the second post of each thread, so that the thread-starter of future threads could double-post each time and post both the OP and the links-post. That makes it fairly easy, IMO... what do you think?

Haven't had time to look at the videos you've mentioned as I'm actually watching football now but I was thinking, how about dividing it up into the albums? So a bunch of links for OKC, for example, and smaller divisions into fanvids, live performances, covers etc. And then have a separate section for complete shows or the webcasts. Is that OK? (We really need a board don't we! But it's highly unlikely so cest la vie).

Yes, I can see uk.youtube videos - it's just whether the uploader specifies regions. I'll let you know if I can't see any of the videos though!

The second post idea sounds good. I currently have the second post in this thread, so once we get this organized I'll go edit that post. And then the next thread starter can copy those two posts.

Dividing it by albums seems like a good idea. So it would be something like this, if I understand you correctly:

ALBUM
1) Official videos
2) Fan-vids
3) Live performances NOT INCLUDING those in the full-show category below
4) Maybe some interviews
5) Covers of material by other artists

^Such a breakdown for each album.

WEBCASTS/SPECIALS
FTB, thumbs_down, etc.

FULL-SHOWS
1) Glastonbury 2003
2) Eurockeenes 2003
3) Canal + 2001
4) Glastonbury 1997
5) Any other great full show? Those seem like the big ones.

Should we divide up parts? There's no rush for this of course, everyone is in school and has other priorities, and this will all probably take awhile (although I have nothing to do tomorrow, so if I'm feeling really ambitious...). But it would probably be helpful if we divided it up in some way. One person responsible for such-and-such album and so forth.

Maybe:

1) Pablo Honey, The Bends, OKC
2) Kid A/Amnesiac
3) HTTT/IR

And for live performances from any of the albums don't include performances from Glastonbury, Eurockeenes, Canal+, webcasts, or FTB as those will all go in their own categories.

Hee hee! I like your ambition. I'll try my best to help although I can forsee it being in drips and drabs (is that a word?). Yes, that's what I imagined - you've added a few more categories actually, that's great. Full shows - do you mean one entire YouTube video for each show, like for Paris '01 and the scotch_mist webcast, or just great shows in general but that we somehow have to collate all the separate videos?

I don't mind taking any era... I think I'm best-versed with Kid A/Amnesiac though so I could do that if you want. I'm not sure what your last sentence means though? And I think we need a separate category for "Others" - the unreleased songs, the B-side performances (shouldn't have many of these that are really good though) etc.

Ignore my last sentence. I think it will be too tedius to try and gather full shows worth of videos.

Each of us will get an "era". Gwen will take Kid A/Amnesiac, I'll take Pablo/The Bends/OKC then, and Jose can have HTTT/IR. If he wants, anyway. He's not here and may want no part in this. To which I say

The goal:
Gather the official music videos and any great live performances of the songs.

Additionally, interviews from the time period, covers, and fanvids can be fun, but they aren't priorities.

Anyone can post any live video they find in the thread (obviously), but it's the job of whoever's album it belongs to to bookmark that link or whatever so as to keep all the videos/links for whatever album, so that we can assemble them all into the second post whenever we get to thread #13. Make sense? So, I can post a video for 'Kid A', for example, but it's Gwen's job to bookmark that and keep it in order with all other Kid A/Amnesiac era videos.

This sounds like a school project. But remember, there's no deadline (even though I keep saying by the next thread, it's an ongoing project, something to do when you're bored and staring at the computer screen).

All that said, Gwen, I really love the performances of 'Idioteque' and 'Kid A' from Eurockenees which I linked above a few posts, so you should include them. You can, of course, have multiple performances of the same song, if you so wish.

I think we should keep FTB and webcasts separate from all this still. So don't use those videos. They'll get their own category and links later. Same with other/unreleased, etc. (We have to have some TSH vids, after all!) But we'll worry about this stuff later. For now, we'll just focus on music videos and live performances from each album.

Yes it does! But a great school project. But yeah, no rush really... which is great, because I don't have much time these days. And it's great because we don't need a separate list for the music videos.

Anyway. I realised I never did get around to finishing my IR track-by-track, so I'll do it now.

'House of Cards'
Then: I always liked it and was looking forward to it as a studio version. When I first heard it I was surprised by the amount of reverb (that took a lot of getting used to), but I really enjoyed the little effects here and there. Cue my surprise when I realised it was all Jonny's guitar. Jonny = incredible.
Now: I don't love it as much anymore - I used to rank it as #2, now it's probably #5 or #6 (I should re-rank IR one day) but it's still good. I like how it's really relaxed. It has some nice lines too - I like "I don't want to be your friend, I just want to be your lover" and "forget about your house of cards and I'll build/deal mine" (can't remember the exact words). Not to mention, the vocals at the ending of the song, the "Your ears should be burning" bit, I love it. Loved it when I first heard it and I still love it now.

'Jigsaw Falling Into Place'
Then: Wasn't one of my favourite boots and when it came out I didn't love it either.
Now: I like it, but it's one of the lower-ranked songs for me. It's the "I like it but I prefer the other stuff" syndrome. The video is funny though.

'Videotape'
Then: I heard the Thom solo first so to be honest when I first heard the Hammersmith boot (and other 'Videotape' boots) I wasn't awed by the full band at the end... so I've never been that attached to the '06 version. I didn't take very kindly to the album version though - I thought it was too somber and it took too damn long to end after Thom stopped singing.
Now: I can't decide which is the "best" version to end off IR, I vacilliate a lot to be honest. For the most part I just accept the studio version as that's the one I'm most used to.

I'm here I'm here. And I'd be glad to do it, the problem is that I honestly wouldn't know where to start from, so I'm sure my list of vids would look downright poor comparing to yours. I can try though. Do some research.

I see Gwen you don't like Jigsaw that much. It wasn't my most fave track either but I really like it now, especially when picks its pace up.

Well I started out not knowing anything either, it was just through hours of time wasting, trawling places like YouTube, watching one video and then jumping onto another through the "Related Videos" section... that section is great. But honestly, it's not like you're going to be doing this on your own! We'll all be contributing videos to all sections of the list, it's just that you'll be in charge of collating the HTTT and IR portions

It's not that I don't like 'Jigsaw', I'm sure I like it more than Simone actually - it's just that I prefer a lot of the other songs on IR. I like how it's quite relaxed lyrically though. Thom is so much more at peace/happy/not distressed/upset/etc these days, which is great.

So, I thought I'd try my hand at getting a few Pablo Honey performances found, get the worst out of the way first and all that, and then I found this in the Related Videos tab and I just love the piano in the live versions of this, even though the album version is magnificent as well. So I thought I'd share.

I also found this, more on topic for me, and it made me A rather infamous performance, it will have to be included.

That's a nice video of 'LSP', thanks for that Simone - I'll have to include that. I don't like it when Thom starts to moralise though. I know I've mentioned it before but it makes me uncomfortable, even though I'm not a supporter of Bush or whoever... he has the right to make his views known, but it doesn't really sit easy with me. Thankfully the performance is great though.

Oh god, that's a horrible video (the second one) I swear my eyeballs were burning. I don't know how Thom and Jonny thought their look was OK, honestly (how the hell did they get modelling gigs?). Actually, all of them. And since when did Ed showboat so much? (I avoid the hell out of PH videos so I don't know). As a performance though it's pretty good. Nice, clear audio, but is that because the person re-synced the audio? It doesn't sync with the video. And god, those have to be some of the worst Radiohead lyrics ever.
