Radiohead #11: We're on a roll!

Welcome to the

Banner by Forgotten By The Sun

Well, Radiohead aren't a band that require much introduction, but in case you happen to have been living under a rock all these years, here is an overview, of sorts:

Radiohead are a British band from Oxfordshire, England, comprised of five musicians. Though often classed as alternative rock, they have been deeply influenced by music from a variety of genres. Radiohead is often praised as one of the most creative bands of their era, known for their multilayered songs and artistic evolution from album to album. They are seen by many to have maintained musical and political independence despite recording for a major label.

They first broke into the music scene with the album Pablo Honey, containing the hit single 'Creep', a song about low self-esteem and self-hatred that many listeners could identify with. The song was so huge, in fact, that critics wrote the band off as one-hit wonders - a label that seemed to have weight after subsequent singles such as 'Pop Is Dead' were savaged by critics. However, Radiohead bounced back in the form of their second album, The Bends in 1995 - a much more mature-sounding rock album that spawned Radiohead's highest-ranked single on the British charts, 'Street Spirit (Fade Out)'. Two years later came what many people have hailed their best album, OK Computer - an album that has made many "Greatest Albums" lists. Some have also derided their work for its bleakness and lack of instant accessibility - in part due to the double dose of nihilism in the next two albums Kid A and Amnesiac, but it is also proof of the band's willingness to experiment and explore the boundaries of rock. With their sixth album, Hail to the Thief, Radiohead brought guitars back into the picture while still incorporating experimental and electronic beats, thus creating a sort of synthesis of their previous five records.

On October 10, 2007, Radiohead released their latest album, In Rainbows. The band made headlines for the method of the release: a digitial download that buyers could choose the price of, even if that meant paying nothing. It was also available as a special edition Discbox with artwork, vinyls, and bonus songs. We at the Radiohead thread are happy to announce that In Rainbows is an excellent album, well worth the four year wait. The album was released via traditional means in January 2008.

Thom has a solo album, The Eraser, however he does not like to refer to it as a solo album and says he is not splitting up with the band - much to the relief of fans everywhere! Jonny also has worked on solo projects, including the soundtrack to Bodysong and There Will Be Blood. In addition, he works as the BBC’s composer in residence.

Radiohead are (L-R):

Ed O'Brien (guitar, harmony vocals, special effects, percussion)
Phil Selway (drums and percussion)
Thom Yorke (lead vocals, rhythm guitar, piano, electronic programming)
Jonny Greenwood (lead guitar, keyboard, ondes martenot, electronic programming, string arrangements, various)
Colin Greenwood (bass, keyboards)

Gwen-- The link to Radiohead videos is to an old post of yours, you should go edit it to include the 'House of Cards' video.

Hiya Sylv! How're you? Did you know, I have the footage from your June 25 Victoria Park concert? A friend gave it to me. Also, I like the sig

Simone: I know, I just can't remember which thread it was in. I'm thinking of re-doing the list and putting it as the second post always so it's easier to edit and bring to the next thread as we go along. Would that be better?

This would have been fun, wouldn't it? Apparently it's not true though. Still, would've been interesting (if highly unlikely). Oh well. 'Reckoner' alone is good enough, even if I don't love Chuck Palahnuik like everybody else does.

Welcome!

Gwen, whatever you want. We could always just add the list into the first post like in the SR thread. I guess there's more Radiohead videos and we don't want to clutter up the OP too much, but it might not be too bad. We just need to make sure they're all official music videos, I guess.

Oh man, that would have owned (I'm a semi Chuck lover because of Fight Club)! Bummer that it wasn't true. But yay for 'Reckoner' in the closing credits! I'll pay five bucks just to hear it on the big screen.

I know, I got excited for that even though I'm not a huge fan either. Then came the 'Nope, not really happening' news, ah well.

Hi Crystal! Well err I tend to find the Greatest Hits album a bit distasteful, but that's only because I know EMI released the album without the permission (not that they need it) or approval (again, not needed but would've been nice) of the band... the songs itself are OK though, even if it's very biased towards The Bends/OKC. Which is a real shame because the band have done a lot more since that era, but what can you do. I'm glad you like the album though! What's your favourite song? Apart from 'Creep' that is.

OK sure Simone. When I'm a bit more free (school just started so it's a bit busy these days) I'll go edit my second post to reflect the videos or something. And about Heima and all the other Radiohead stuff - you may not get them soon, for the reason above. I'll try to get started on copying Heima soon though. But don't hold your breath

Alisha and Sylv, I was quite the same - the "ah well" bit anyway. Besides I tend to think film scores = Jonny, not the whole band so that was kind of odd. Still it'll be fun to have 'Reckoner' at the end of the movie - I was watching Romeo + Juliet recently and apart from how amazing it is I really loved 'Exit Music' during the credits. And of course 'TSH' but that's a different story...

Yeah I have it! I immediately thought of you Sylv when I get around to watching it it'll be like I was really there - cool beans indeed!

That's fine, Gwen, take your time. Just remember, don't bother sending to my US address any later than August 30th or so. At that point, just wait for me to send you a German address.

And I can't say whether I'm a Chuck Palwhatever fan myself as I've never read anything of his. I have Fight Club so one of these days... He's a local author, after all. I should probably read at least one thing by him. Plus everyone's like 'OMG you've never seen 'Fight Club!?' because I haven't and don't want to until I read the book.

Alright. Although today I told myself to get a move on so hopefully I'll send it to you by next week or something. But without the full FTB concert (I won't have 'The Gloaming') - I won't see my friend anytime soon to get the torrent. Still, no matter - if I do get it maybe I'll re-burn or something Is that OK?

I don't like him that much actually. I tried to read Choke but I gave up, I didn't really like it. I've never seen Fight Club either even though it's such a cult classic - I spoiled myself before watching (hey, I was curious!) and now I don't feel the need to watch it, if you get me.

Anyway. Have you all seen this? It's 'The Gloaming', from their From The Basement session - the band gave this video to everyone who completed their survey on how they got to their US concerts (the first leg, obviously). Anyway I really love 'The Gloaming', especially live with that bass (!) but I've always thought that the live version doesn't end very well, it's like they end because they don't know how else to end... it's the same here, but it's not so bad this time around. Anyway this is like the civilised and gentle version of 'The Gloaming' - something I never thought I'd say - and it's great too, I love it. Go watch it.

Hey! New thread.

Thanks for that vid of The Gloaming. Did I tell you guys it's one of the songs I enjoy from HTTT. I've actually notice I have a thing for underrated songs, because I like YAWA? too.

I so love the beat on that performance. The beats and the drums merge perfectly, I like the delay between both percussions. It's a little bit jazzy, isn't it?

I know what you mean about the ending of the song. It's something that always bothers me (not just with this song but all songs, Radiohead or otherwise) but I suppose live it's not like you've got a lot of choice. I'm still disappointed they didn't play this the night I went to Victoria Park because it's definitely one of the best, or rather 'nicest' vocal performances by Thom I think. Yes 'nice' is a crap word to use but I just mean it's not jaw droppingly amazing but just... very very solid. I do love Ed's haunting backing vocals too

I don't think 'YAWA?' is underrated though. Maybe it doesn't get people fawning over it like 'Pyramid Song' or 'HTDC' do, but I think it's appreciated. It's not like people are putting it down the way they do for 'The Gloaming' at any rate. What are the other underrated songs you like? I like quite a few of them too

Yeah this really is a great performance of 'The Gloaming', probably my most favourite (although it lacks the energy of a live-audience rendition). I just realised the machine (no idea what it is) says "Go away Colin -----" what's that about? And it's funny, I've always wondered what Jonny does on the laptop the first time you see him - I always imagine him using the internet (ie, not doing anything for the song), it's not like he needs to be at the laptop for the beat to play, right?

Well some songs have proper endings (I don't like songs that fade out). The studio version ends perfectly well but because they've changed the live one now it doesn't end properly. Which is annoying. Still I can't see how they can end this live one properly so I don't know.

By 'this', Sylv, do you mean 'The Gloaming'? Well I suppose they have to alternate their setlist. Hee hee I know what you mean actually. A solid vocal isn't amazing but it's something to be happy with anyway. Ed's vocals... I prefer the one in 'Apreggi' but I do like this one, yes.
