Placebo Appreciation Thread #21: Soulmates Never Die+Sexy cover=THUD

Placebo Appreciation Thread #21: Soulmates Never Die+Sexy cover=THUD

The old thread is here.

We love Placebo because...
1)They are a three-man band that's 50% gay.
2)Brian's voice is beautifully haunting.
3)The lyrics are beautiful.
4)They don't take themselves seriously.
5)Brian is one of the most beautiful and creative men alive.
6)They can take an evil psycho stalker guy's disgusting, threatening message on Brian's answering machine, work it into their music and make it funny.
7)These boys are just so naughty.
8)They make you come to this thread at 4 a.m.
9)At first glance you can never tell if Brian's a boy or a girl.
10)They can lay us down anytime.
11)Brian breaks the word 'me' up and sings 'me - hee - hee - hee'.
12)Brian is sex personified when he sings(or speaks) in French.
13)They wrap us in lust and lunacy.
14)Instead of stressed we lie here charmed.
15)A nekked Brian can lead us like the blind anyday.
16)We understand the fascination.
17)We know they're as twisted as we are.
18)Our supply of porn tea will never run out.
19)They are gorgeous - even in christmas stockings.
20)Brian's got the best frocks and little tops.
21)Only Brian can wear something that barely resembles a hat, and stil manage to look immensely shaggable in it.
22)Even Brian can't carry off the wearing of shorts, amazing as he is... he's only a human goth lady-boy.
23)Brian and perversity go together like chocolate and sin.
24)Stefan named his first electric guitar banana, because it was yellow...
25)Brian chased his production manager around the pool with a piece of wood that was bigger than he was
26)Bri is an alien sex dwarf.
27)While Bri may be a dick, he's our dick.

Feel free to add to the list guys!

Nicky I was joking about that title and you know it! You sneakster.

Frozen grapes are so sodding good.

Current song for Placebo? As in, which do you seem to be listening to a lot? For me, it's Plasticine. Hope I spelt that right. And Bulletproof Cupid to wake me up in the mornings. Mmm, pure music.

I so did not! And apparently T seconded it too! You guys have a conspiracy going on! *peeks around suspiciously*

Current Placebo song of choice is Running up that Hill off the covers album. Lovely.

New thread! Yay!

Nicky- "2468" is a rare demo from 1994. And no need to worry, you can find it on THIS great site along with 5 other demos, it's under 'Audio/Visuals', they're all great, especially "Eyesight To The Blind" which is one of my favorite Placebo songs ever God bless the internet Oh, and I'm patiently waiting for pictures of that Veils hottie

T- Oh, I'm so sorry you have to put up with MTV Nordic MTV2 is absolutely wicked! In addition to playing some great music (not including the headache-giving EMO videos they've started playing quite a lot lately ) they don't have commercial breaks, instead they have these amusing quotes people send, like for example: "Why is water wet?", "MTV2 loves tall goths", "Milk is evil", "MTV2 loves the unemployed" and the one they've been putting a lot lately is "I'm bored and my nipples are hard" there are so many better ones that I don't remember at the moment. Plus sometimes they have these funny videos they edit, for example they took Thom Yorke in the "No Surprises" video and edited his mouth expressions so it would look like he's singing "Hero" by Enrique Iglesias, and there's this one of Abba singing "No One Knows" by Queens of the Stone Age, and it's so hilarious They have these crazy shows like "Top 5 rock stars toilets" And lately they show a lot of band X Vs. band Y, like Radiohead Vs. Muse, Foo Fighters Vs. QOTSA, etc. The only annoying thing is that they repeat every single show so many times, they showed this 20 minute Placebo concert about 20 times in the last 3 months, and as mush as I appreciate the fact that they show it, it gets kinda boring to watch it again and again and you wish they'd show something new, but it's better than nothing I guess

E- First you had my babies and now you want to have the babies of the guy in my art class? Careful darling, or you're gonna end up like Mick Jagger
Your description of that scene intrigued me, so, don't tell anyone, but I've started downloading an episode from Kazaa

Here's a cute pic from the good ol' days

Ooh, I can't believe you're complaining! Think of all us poor people here who'd kill to see some more Placebo! Anyway, thanks for the links! Off to check the demos out.

Nicky - I believe that was T's evil plan so that she didn't have to come up with her own title. Oh well!

Anna - Yes, perhaps I am building up too many children. I shan't be able to feed them all. As for downloading some CB... yay! Ballad of the Fallen Angel is the one with the great bit, or... a title that's really similar. I always stuff it up. It's episode 6 I believe.

And a link! Must find said link.

GOrgeous old photo. Awww, our boys.

Love the photo!

Argh, that description makes MTV2 sound like heaven!! Damn, I'd love to see that Abba/QotSA vid *G*

But as it is, I'm just happy with SubTV as they just showed the puppet video last night.

I have evil plans? No, no, I'm quite innocent there . Though if you meant cunning plans... *continues whistling* . That btw reminds me of a completely OT bit of news: Miranda Otto is filming a movie with Hugh Laurie (*squees* ) called The Flight of the Phoenix. Granted the premise isn't perhaps the most original (a plane crash leaves a bunch of people scrambling about to find stuff to build a plane of), but those two are enough ot make me want to see it - I'm easily amused after all *G*.

Nicky, I'm really sorry it came out sounding so ungrateful, I honestly had no intention of making anybody mad, my english is probably still too terrible, and I didn't express correctly what I meant, it's only human nature to underappreciate what we have. And I don't mean to be rude, but you are the poor ones??? You have to understand my point of view, Placebo are obviously never gonna come here, and I even have proof of that: one of the people at the Israeli Placebo forum sent an e-mail to the official site, and their reply was something like "Placebo will come to Israel only when the situation is better and when there's peace and quiet" and to be realistic (and passimistic), that's clearly not gonna happen anytime soon. It was also said in the reply that Placebo is against the attitude of the israeli government on the palestinian question, which I don't understand how it has to do with their fans here, I mean it's kinda hypocritical of them to say cause as we all know they're against Bush too, but that didn't seem to stop them from touring the US. And if you've seen the new summer tour dates on the official site, they're gonna come to Lebanon, which happens to be right next us, and although I've never been there, I'm about 90% sure that the musical awareness in Israel is so much bigger than in Lebabnon, and it seriously hurts me that they're playing there but not here And about the concert they're showing on MTV2, it's really not as good as it sounds, it's very short, about 5 songs, well actually 4.5 since they cut "The Bitter End" after the second verse (Probably didn't want us to find out what Brian sings at the end ), and all 3 of them don't look very enthusiastic and the show itself kinda sucked, not that I would actually know what is considered a 'good' show, but it just didn't seem like what you would call "the greatest concert in the world" to me. And this quite crappy 20-minute concert on MTV2 is probably all I'm ever gonna see of them performing live. Singles are not released here, I'm not even sure if the DVD is gonna come out here, so it may sound selfish of me, but I can't deny the obvious, I want more, watching this concet for 20 times isn't enough for me, and I want to be able to see my favorite band live. It's not so easy living here nowadays, especially when people are murdered here almost every week (we just had another terror attack 3 days ago) and it kinda became a part of our lives, a routine, people are treating it like 'oh, another attack, how not surprising', and the entire country is really depressed. But let's stick to the music issue cause politics and the middle-east crisis are not exactly my field of expertise. Israel used to be very active in the music field, a lot of famous bands/singers used to come here all the time, for example: Tori Amos, Madonna, Alanis Morissette, Guns n’ Roses, Michael Jackson, Bjork, Garbage, Metallica, just to name a few, and not a lot of people know this but even Radiohead's first concert outside the UK was here (it was long before "Creep" became internationally known), oh and Travis' Fran Healy wrote their big hit "Why Does It Always Rain On Me" while he was staying in Israel so yeah, I'd say it wasn't bad here at all. But for the last 4 years nobody worth mentionning came here, and it looks like we've been deprived of one the greatest things in the world IMO and something that could make people here a lot happier – the ability to see and experience live music, and if it wasn't for Radio and TV, I'm sure that music would have been pretty much non-existent here by now. Unfortunately, I wasn't old and mature enough to appreciate music when all those artists came here, and now that (I think) I am, no one is willing to come here, and music is very important to me and it's a big part of my everyday life, so I have an urge to experience it live, and it doesn't look like it's gonna happen in the near future. I don't mean for it to sound like "poor me, pity me", I try to look at the bright side of things, but it's not something that can be easily done these days.
Ooops I deeply apologize for this awfully long rant, it accidentally turned out to be longer than I had planned it, I obviously overreacted, but I just felt like I needed to make my point clear, and my fingers just didn't seem to stop typing

Well, I sure do know how to depress people, don't I? I seem to spread negative energy everywhere I go lately, so feel free to ignore my babble cause the last thing I want is to turn this thread into a war zone. So I hope you don't hate me for it, let's just get back to the usual posts please

So Nicky did you like the demos? Which one was your favorite?

E - I watched the first CB episode (or at least I think it was the first, as you know Kazaa can be quite deceitful when it comes to the names of the files) and I really liked it, gonna download episode 6 now

A few new pics:

Oh, and my current Placebo favorite would be "The innocence of sleep" cause all I wanna do lately is to get some sleep

Anna - Awww, sweety, they weren't mad! They're just joking around and being jealous. Don't worry about it.

As for the music situation... ugh. That does suck. It really does just hurt when bands do that doesn't it? I was hurt enough when Placebo came to Australia but didn't come to my city. It's the capital of my state, so you know, bands touring always come here. Placebo were playing at a musical festival around 1.5 hours from here so I suppose they thought the Brisbane people would just go to that. Of course I did, but that's not a proper concert - they only play for about 50 minutes and the crowd is full of people who aren't even fans. Them not coming to Australia at all would make me livid.

And that's great about CB! I hope it was the first one. And soon you'll get to meet Faye and Ed [and Ein! A dog...] who complete the show so much.

Aww, I doubt anyone here is really mad. Except in the completely mental way of ocourse because let's face it, if we were all sane, it'd be bloody boring here .

I can't say I know what it feels like with all that political stuff thrown in, Anna, but I do know how much it just simply sucks when bands will come to the country just next to yours, but they won't bother making that one extra day trip to the other side of the border. All the big bands alwyas play in Stockholm, but very few of them bother to come to Helsinki. Placebo included. (Though of coruse with them it's quite understandable that Sweden always gets visited. )

I won't pretend to like what's going on down there, but I won't pretend to understand it either, because I doubt I could never understand the whole situation well enought to start debating about it (besides, I don't actually like debating ). Point is that while my views may be more libertarian than the Dalai Lama's and almost as left as Stalin's according to the Political Compass, they have never gotten in the way of me and my friends. Just like disagreeing anything from Iraq to abortions and such. Hell, most of the time I get along with my brother like a house on fire and he's a sodding capitalist .

What my rambling post is trying to say is please, do feel feel to rant anytime you feel the need to, dear .

Awwww, thank you both *is relieved that she didn't get kicked out of the thread*

There actually were a lot of rumers going on here that Placebo were supposed to come to Israel in November 2003 to perform with Aviv Geffen, a famous Israeli singer who is also a big Placebo fan and knows the band, but that predictably didn't happen.

E- But you are going to see them in a normal concert on March 21st, right? So you see, you are getting what you want after all.
Oh, and the second CB episode is still downloading, so haven't watched it yet

That's true, more than half of the people who know me couldn't agree with you more.
Oh, and debating (especially about politics) is definitely something I'd rather avoid, so it was very unlike me to start this whole discussion, don't know what's gotten into me, must be another proof that I might be schizophrenic so let's forgive and forget , and get back to the regular, less serious style of posting

Nicky- I hope I didn't scare you or anything, don't take anything I say seriously, I compeltely exaggerated, it was really stupid of me to get so uptight over nothing (these new smilies are quite useful )

Oh, I found this on some site, but it was last updated in October 2003, so there are a lot more concerts which aren't included here:

Placebo has played since 1995 till today(October 7th, 2003) 518 gigs in 36 countries.

England: 126
USA: 85
Germany: 59
France: 47
Australia: 30
Scottland: 21
Spain: 20
Ireland: 12
Belgium: 12
Canada: 11
Italy: 9
Portugal: 9
Holland: 8
Denmark: 7
Switzerland: 7
Luxembourg: 6
Austria: 6
Sweden: 5
Japan: 4
South Africa: 3
Waled: 3
Greece: 3
New zealand: 3
Norway: 3
Mexico: 3
Poland: 2
Czech. Republik: 2
Croatia: 2
Hungary: 2
Turkey: 2
Serbia: 1
Russia: 1
Bulgaria: 1
Finnland: 1
Asia: 1
Latvia: 1

Oh, BTW, Aviv Geffen, whom I mentioned above, is now in a group called Blackfield together with Steven Wilson, the singer of Porcupine Tree (an amazing band, in case you haven't heard of them), and they're really popular in Israel lately, but their album has only been released here at the moment (it's supposed to be released in England soon) so I thought I should recommend them I think you should try and download "Pain" and "Hello", their first 2 singles, which are rather good IMO (oh, and you don't have to worry about hebrew, it's all in english )

I've been wondering for a long time now what does the word Placebo mean?I know it's a stupid question and probably obvious but I can't figure it out...

Well, Placebo is a substance that's given to patients, but the only difference is that it actually doesn't contain any medication, and the patients only think that they're getting better because of it, when in fact it has no effect on them at all. Or something like that. Oh, and it also means "I shall please" in Latin I'm not really good at explaining this stuff, especially not at almost 1am, so I should go to sleep now, cause unforotunately we study on sundays here
