Placebo #24: It's not going to take Twenty Years for the next album to come out!

Placebo Appreciation Thread #24: It's not going to take Twenty Years for the next album to come out!

The thread pet: The Homogoblin!

Courtesy of T.
Derived from the Brian quote "We thought about calling [Black Market Music] Haemoglobin, but we were afraid some stupid American DJ's gonna announce 'here's Tasting Men by Place-bo from their album Homogoblin."

The old thread is here.

We love Placebo because...
1)They are a three-man band that's 50% gay.
2)Brian's voice is beautifully haunting.
3)The lyrics are beautiful.
4)They don't take themselves seriously.
5)Brian is one of the most beautiful and creative men alive.
6)They can take an evil psycho stalker guy's disgusting, threatening message on Brian's answering machine, work it into their music and make it funny.
7)These boys are just so naughty.
8)They make you come to this thread at 4 a.m.
9)At first glance you can never tell if Brian's a boy or a girl.
10)They can lay us down anytime.
11)Brian breaks the word 'me' up and sings 'me - hee - hee - hee'.
12)Brian is sex personified when he sings(or speaks) in French.
13)They wrap us in lust and lunacy.
14)Instead of stressed we lie here charmed.
15)A nekked Brian can lead us like the blind anyday.
16)We understand the fascination.
17)We know they're as twisted as we are.
18)Our supply of porn tea will never run out.
19)They are gorgeous - even in christmas stockings.
20)Brian's got the best frocks and little tops.
21)Only Brian can wear something that barely resembles a hat, and stil manage to look immensely shaggable in it.
22)Even Brian can't carry off the wearing of shorts, amazing as he is... he's only a human goth lady-boy.
23)Brian and perversity go together like chocolate and sin.
24)Stefan named his first electric guitar banana, because it was yellow...
25)Brian chased his production manager around the pool with a piece of wood that was bigger than he was
26)Bri is an alien sex dwarf.
27)While Bri may be a dick, he's our dick.
28)Brian has a yum bum.

Feel free to add to the list guys!

Thanks for the start, Nicky

Anna - yeah, but I'd say Maccabi must have played quite well as Bayern only won by one goal and even that was just a pen . Definitely a good start for a newcomer.

Thanks for posting the album cover - looks lovely . Makes me think of.. er, licking... hmmm

OT question of the day: Why does French pop sound so effortless? *goes back to listening to Phoenix*. They give pop quite a good a good name.

Hey, I'm Sasha.

I know absolutely nothing about Placebo, but I've been listening to a few of their songs, and I really like them, so I'm going to start finding out more about them. Just wanted to say hi.

Ditto .

Phoenix? I don't believe I'd heard of them, but I just checked them out at AMG, where you can also listen to samples of all of their songs, and I've so far enjoyed their stuff . Thanks for the rec darling, can't download a thing at the moment, but if my comp will miraculously get fixed one of these days, I'll definitely look further into them.

Wowness! 2 newbies! This is so very exciting!

Welcome Sasha! Nice seeing more people getting into Placebo. Where are you from? What songs have you been listening to? Any plans on getting one/all of their albums in ther near future?

And welcome Virrig! How long have you been a Placebo fan? Do you have all of their albums? Which one is your favourite? Yes, the banner is very pretty, Nicky's done a great job on it! And what do you think of our dear Homogoblin, made by the much dearer T? Isn't he the coolest?

Where's E? This place just isn't the same without her.

Some gorgeous Brian pics to brigthen up your day :

Thanks Anna! I'm actually not quite sure how long I've been a fan, I know I've like them for several years, but I don't really know when it started. I guess I can't really imagine a time before Placebo, hehe.

Naming a favorite album is hard, I guess it really depends on the day and my mood, but I do have a really weak spot for their debut album.

I love the Homogoblin! It's the most hilarious and cool thread pet I've ever seen!

And thanks for the pretty, pretty pictures! There's nothing like a little bit of Brian to lift your spirits!

I love you already! So, have you ever been to a concert?

A fantastic choise! Mine's WYIN, but the self-titled is a very close second.

Very, very true!

Have you heard the new songs? (I posted the links on the last page of the previous thread, in case you haven't) What's your opinion on them? Oh, and are you planning on buying the singles compilation? (Sorry for this whole investigation approach, I'm just so glad there's somebody new here that shares our obsession ).

Heh, they're talking about Placebo (the medication) on the news right at this moment. Lovely hearing the name on tv here, even if they mean something else. (Also, Madonna & Guy Ritchie are currently visiting here, so they's getting quite a big coverage, which makes it actually interesting watching the news lately).

Thanks. Unfortunately, I'm from Southern California.

Some of the songs I've heard them sing are Twentieth Century Boy, Centerfolds, All Apologies, Days Before You Came, No Other God, Twenty Years, Soulmates, You Don't Care About Us, The Bitter End and Five Years. The last two were MPEG files, the rest MP3s.

I'd like to get their albums, but have no idea how many they have or what they are titled. Any help?

ETA: I also heard Taste In Men.

Sasha

Ack! Those pics just made my day 10x bettter.

Um, well I first heard about them by watching Velvet Goldmine and then getting the soundtrack. I decideded from there I had to buy an album so I got Black Market Music (and yeah it's def. crazy addictive) and then I got the self titled album (which I'm stuck listening to recently...I've fallen in love the song Nancy Boy and can't quit playing it)

I plan to eventually get the other album provided I have the money and can find them at the store.

Glad to hear you liked what you heard . You can see two of their videos online: Everythin is Everything here and If I Ever Feel Better here. The latter one is the first song of their that I heard. Loved the video MTV showed of it, but sadly that's not that video. I guess they mad a new international video later on.

Oh and on the same site as the If I Ever.... video, you can see the freakiest video ever. Well, at least in my opinion. The artist is actually Finnish, but the song's in English. He's probably more known abroad than in here since his music is of the rather eclectic electronic kind.

Ahh, those pics just made my day - thank you darling

Virrig - the homogoblin much appreciates the love

S.A.S.H.A. - Twentieth Century Boy? Ah, that's definitely my favourite. Even though it's not their own song, they cover it so damn perfectly . Same goes for Bigmouth Strikes Again.

You can see Placebo's discography here for example .

T - Thanks for the links sweetie "If I Ever Feel Better" is very catchy, but my brother doesn't have Winamp or Realplayer, so I can't watch the EIE video, but that's okay, cause you know what I just realized? That I actually have seen it a couple of times on Alternative Nation (BTW, do you get this show on your MTV? It's every Tuesday at midnight here, it's one of the few shows I bother watching on MTV these days, in addition to my latest addiction to SpongeBob Squarepants ), and I guess I just never paid much attention to the band's name. But yeah, they're quite good, I really like the singer's voice . Oh dear god! That Pepe Deluxe video is absolutely hilarious! Salami Fighting Association? That is just sick! Whoever thought of that video concept must be either some misunderstood genius or a very disturbed individual.

Sasha - If you are indeed planning on purchasing their albums, I think you should start with the first two: "Placebo" and "Without You I'm Nothing", the first is quite bouncy and fun, and the second is more melancholic, but both are brilliant. And if you like them, which I'm certain you will, you should then continue to "Black Market Music" and "Sleeping with Ghosts", which are fantastic as well . Oh, and in the meantime, you can listen to their lovely b-sides (especially Slackerbitch, Then the Clouds Will Open for Me, Ion, Leni, Drowning by Numbers...).

Rivulet027 - Yeah, Nancy Boy usually has that effect on people . Good luck with finding the other albums!

That's quite all right. I don't mind at all. Unfortunately, I have not been able to go to a concert. Which I'm not really cool with, might I add. I want to see them and I want it yesterday! But it seems as if the whole world is against me on that point, which is not really fair. And Placebo deprivation is not something that should be taken lightly. Ok, rambling.

Yeah, WYIM is fantastic, too. And that particular song too...

I've had "20 years" on my brain for a while now. There's just something about the lyrics that really appeals to me. And I am planning to buy the singles album. I just can't not, you know?

T - Good, cause it deserves it!

Oh, my, god, I'm SUCH a spaz. I've sitting in front of my user panel looking at my tracked topics wondering why the Placebo topic has been dead for two days, and I just realised I've been tracking the old thread and haven't added this new thread to my tracked list yet! :d'oh:

Welcome Sasha and Virrig!

Anna - Where did you get those pics? They are beyond cute!

Hmm... my preference of albums would go in order of Sleeping with Ghosts, Without You I'm Nothing, Black Market Music and then Placebo, cos I have a strong preference for tunes and I think it's safe to say that they grow more and more tuneful as they develop... and more electronic, as well.

I had a dream I was at a Placebo concert the other day... but I woke up before the band actually came on.

Anna - No problem . They've shows EIE on tv there? I'm envious! Well, chances are they've shown it here too as yep, Alternative Nation is on here too. I just have a really bad ahabit of missing it since it's on at one AM on Nordic MTV . I'm going to have to give myself a good kick and start taping it again. I used to do it all the time, but then I kinda let it go when there were a few too many times for my comfort shows that had like 2 decent videos in two hours on avarage..

Spongebob? Now there's a show I don't get . Honestly, MTV's showing it here now and I just don't get the attraction. The latest animation that I saw was actually in an episode of Farscape (I love that show ). In that, Crichton was sort of in a coma and parts of the things he "dreamed" were done in good ol' WB cartoon style - only instead of the Roadrunner, it was Crichton escaping all of D'argo's very Wily E. Coyote -styled traps *G*.

I think disturbing is the best word for that video . The guy's a Finn so I guess I'll go with misunderstood genious even if I don't ever want to quite understand it

Virrig - You're not the only one. I've never seen them live either . They've been to Finland all of once and that was some rather crappy festival ages ago. Stef should take better care of his neighbours (okay, so he probably doesn't even live in Sweden, but you get the point *g*)
