Pet Shop Boys #1 - They are after all... Fundamental

As you probably know Pet Shop Boys will release on 22 May 2006 a new album called Fundamental. They already released a new single "I'm with Stupid" on May 8th.

I thought if there are one or two fans of the band here at FF, this would be a nice place to talk about them.

You can find all the information about them here:

You started it!

You are love.

I've been listening to them a lot lately...PSB and New Order.

I've gotten obsessed with Mashups lately and I think PSB and New Order should be mashed. I wish I knew how to do that, but I have no skills.

No, you are. Because I finally have somebody to talk to about my obsession. So, thank you.

What do you think about the new album?

Did you listen to Electronic? I just love Disappointed and Get the message.

New Order's album Waiting for the sirens' call was a really great album. I love Krafty and Waiting for the sirens' call.

It's your turn.

I have not heard the new album. Right now, I am going through a monetary dry spell due to the obscene amount of money I have spent buying tickets for summer concerts...but isn't the album due until the 22?

Has it leaked online already?

I'll feel very guilty downloading the whole album. It's the Pet Shop Boys!!!

Electronic was the Marr and Sumner collabaration, right? Haven't heard them. Though I definately want to...it's the money issue. And bad internet issue.

I don't know why, but I've always favored their earlier stuff best...it's the same with all my favorite bands, really. The Smiths, The Beatles, New Order, The Police...it's the earlier albums that always do it for me.

With PSB a lot of it has to do with my parents influence Please came out the year of my birth, and it's all I listened to as a babe, apparently, because I don't remember and have to depend on what they tell me.

I'm also a lover of the remixes they do of other songs. Tennant and Lowe are frickin' amazing.

I have to admit it, I downloaded it. Yes, I know I'm that weak. But only to hear the songs. As soon as it will be released I will go and buy the album.

I don't know but I feel that all they had to say, they said it long time ago. It's not that I dislike their new album but I don't love it either.

If you want it I can upload for you Get the message and Disappointed, it won't be a problem. Just send me a PM.

Yes, Electronic were Johnny and Sumner but they had Neil Tennant on lead vocals for few songs (Disappointed included). It's such a shame they released only 2 albums.

Guh, I know! But I understand it was only a side project and Bernard was always with New Order...

(I worship New Order on a pedestal )

I will love you if you upload music for me.

How did you get into PSB? It's not everyday you see a person...most everyone I knowis sitting around listenting to whatver MTV is playing.

I blame some really old tapes of my father and VH1 for that. MTV, so not for me.

Btw, you have a PM.

I remember my old "True Faith" days. What I like about New Order is the fact their music didn't change that much over the years.

Ugh, I think "Get The Message" might just be my new favorite song.

Why oh why did they not continue that greatness? It was like taking all the musical aspects each individual was great at and melding them together into that piece of awesomeness.

Now I shall go listen to "Disappointed" and probably go into cardiac arrest at my ripe old age of tweny.

Remy, I owe you my first born child.

No problem, I'm glad you liked them.

I've seen recently the clip for "Get the message". They filmed somewhere in the desert and I have to say that Marr looked really great.

I will try to upload for you Getting Away with It and Can't find my way home after the weekend, because that songs are a must, too.

Jesus, you want my second born child too?

There is going to be some Pet Shop Boys special in the UK...I wish I lived in the UK. They get all the best programs. My friend just sent me a Bowie biography they did over there.

Brandon Flowers of The Killers will make an appearance on the PSB special as Brandon luuuvs Neil Tennant, and vice-versa.

I love music videos filmed in deserts.

Nah, that will be too much, already.

Do you think I should give a chance to The Killers?

A Bowie biography? Sounds great. Don't tell me, you like David Bowie, too? It's getting scarier.

I love BBC Radio 1 because they always play in advance songs/remixes from future releases albums or singles.

Btw, Can't find my way home is from an album Twisted Tenderness released in september 2000. How strange is that?

You like David Bowie as well?

What's your favorite album? They're all so different that I find a lot of people liking Bowie, but not every album as he changes genres throughout. It's very interesting.

I don't get BBC Radio. I have crappy internet...but I'm sure it's the best thing ever. I so loved living in Europe.
See, I think you should definately give The Killers a chance. You might not like them immediately, but listen to them enough, and you'll get it. It's strange. What I like listening for in their music is the influences...like "Mr. Brightside" has a lot of Bowie in it, or lyrically, a song like "Change Your Mind" has Morrissey written all over it while reminding me of the early sweetness of Depeche Mode. Oh, and "Everything Will Be Allright" has a very blatant The Cure reference...

But enough of them. Right now I'm going to run off and download your PM.

I know, my music taste sucks big time. Britney Spears, here I come.

I have actually two favorite albums: Outside (do you know that Hallo Spaceboy is a Pet Shop Boys song written specially for David) and Hours.

My favorite song is Thursday's Child, although I love his early stuff like Jump.

Ok, you convinced me. I'll start downloading the songs you mentioned in your post.

Pet Shop Boys launch new album today

Out already since last week in Germany the new Pet Shop Boys album "Fundamental", their 9th so far, has now been released worlwide through Parlophone Records, EMI. Preceded by the new single, "I'm with stupid" (although "Minimal" was the first choice) the album has been produced by Trevor Horn and features 10 new Tennant/Lowe songs, a short introduction (also written by Tennant/Lowe) and "Numb", a song by Diane Warren, originally recorded for the "PopArt" compilation in 2003. In related news, Neil and Chris have been remixing Bananarama's next single "I feel for you" due for release in july. "I feel for you" is taken from the girls latest album "Drama". A track that Pet Shop Boys wrote early last year for Bananarama wasn't used on the album. Finally, UK residents should tune in on BBC Radio 2 on May 27th at 8.30 pm as the radio will be broadcasting a PSB concert in which Robbie Williams appeared as guest vocalist to sing the extended version of "Jealousy".

Of course I know. What kind of a fan do you take me for?

Actually, one of the things I love so much about PSB is their work with other artists. They have a lovely penchant to write, mix, and produce other artists and when they do it is most usually gold.

And...Robbie Williams? Way to reach out to the mainstream. I liked Robbie's album where he was covering the old standards...all that big band music. I love big band music.

And you know, The Killers songs I mentioned aren't necessarily their best. Their best song so far IMO has been "Jenny Was a Friend of Mine." Morrissey chose it as one of the best songs about murder ever written... That man has impeccable taste.

ETA

The thing you mentioned is this, right....

On Wednesday 24 May Ch4 11.05 pm there will be a programme on the life of the Pet Shop Boys titled Pet Shop Boys: A Life In Pop and Brandon will be on there giving his contribution on them along with Robbie Williams and Jake Shears from Scissor Sisters
I love the Scissor Sisters! The first time a heard a song of theirs, I thought it was Elton John.... I love Elton John.

I love the Franz/Scissor Sisters cover of Bowie's Suffragette City. It's epic.
