Hello -- The Beloved

The lyrics to this song name-check a lot of people.

Jerusalem -- Emerson, Lake & Palmer

This is a song with a rather strange history. The lyrics were originally written as a poem called "And Did Those Feet in Ancient Time" by William Blake, who was an early 19th-century Luddite. It supposes that the events described in the New Testament of the Bible took place not in Palestine, but in England. Hubert Parry set it to music in 1916, and I understand that in some Anglican churches it is sung as a hymn, which I find rather bizarre. Emerson, Lake and Palmer decided to do an ironic version of it, and they gave it the sort of bombastic orchestration that they were known for.

The Anglican church is rather bizarre. It was created by a king who just wanted to have a new wife and didn't get a divorce.

Yeah, it was Henry VIII. He wanted to divorce Catherine of Aragon so he could marry Anne Boleyn. I learned all of this from Rick Wakeman's The Six Wives of Henry VIII.

There is an American variant of the Church of England called the Episcopalian Church. Their doctrine is similar, but they have an arm's-length relationship with the Anglican Church.

We learned that church thing in history classes at school. I was (and am) bad with names and dates but I remembered the story part.

It was an interesting time because it happened at about the same time that Protestantism was starting to happen in England, and they were soon to get Cromwell and all that. The old orders were starting to break down, not just there but all over Europe.
