It is a genre, and it's a great genre!

you defs would of heard some form of it

There are various types of synthwave, there's stuff like what i posted below, which is the heavier/darker stuff (darksynth/darkwave/horrorwave), the fast paced, 80's action/cyberpunk movie stuff (outrun) and the chill stuff (dreamwave/chillwave), stuff with vocals that are usually on the upbeat side (synthpop). there's also the more spacey otherworldy vibe stuff (future-synth/space-synth) probs even more super niche sub genres out there, and every man and his dog has a go at synthwave these days, so you have to wade through a lot of average stuff before you find the great stuff

but i'm always happy to recommend artists! i got into snythwave by stumbling upon the NewRetroWave and LuigiDonatello youtube channels
