Jeff Buckley #1: Oh, That Was So Real

Does anyone else know who this guy is? My ex-boyfriend introduced him to me and I found out that my uncle likes him too.

His most known cd is called Grace. He did an amazing version of Hallelujah and he writes so well. Instead of having the standard song style with a verse, a chorus, a verse, a bridge, and a chorus, he just lets the music take him.

Sadly, he drowned when he was only 30s years old. Thanks to his mother, there are many releases available containing music recorded for new cds or live stuff. I recommend his music if you haven't heard it. Am I the only fan here?

I am actually listening to Hallelujah right now. I think that song is one of the most beautiful ever. I plan on buying his album Grace. I had heard of him and his Hallelujah before, but when it was used on the season finale of The OC, I fell in love with it. The scene made me cry and I believe that it was because the song is so haunting. It is truly beautiful.

I had no idea that he drown. That is crazy, because I thought he was still alive...thats very sad

I love his version of "Hallelujah." Its my favorite of the versions I've heard (Leonard Cohen and Rufus Wainwright are the others.) I also like "Lover You Should've Come Over." But I haven't heard any of his other songs.

I knew he was dead but I never knew how he died. He drowned? Thats awful...

Definitely not the only fan here.

The way he sings his songs is like something else, it's quite intimate. Hallelujah is such a haunting song, it's also my favorite of all of the versions I've heard.

I was a huge fan when I was a teenager/college age. I just rediscovered him recently.

His drowning was actually a suicide. I remember being so sad when it happened.

No, I don't think so. From everything I've read and remember, he drowned accidently. Accounts I've heard say that he was drunk and wading in the Mississippi River and just disappeared...his body surfaced a few days later. I certainly do not claim to be the expert on Jeff Buckley, but I've never heard of his death being a suicide.

Jeff Buckley was, and still is, utterly amazing. I was devastated when news of his death broke. Grace is one of my all-time favorite albums, and imo, the best released in the last 15 years. Sketches... is also brilliant.

I'm so happy there are other fans! It definitly helps that they played one of his songs on The OC. I think his version of Hallelujah is amazing. It gives me chills no matter how many times I hear it. It seems so personal so listening to it feels kind of intrusive. The part where he sings, "Remember when I moved in you and the holy dove was moving too and every breath we drew was Hallelujah" is so strong.

I love Lover, You Should Have Come Over, Last Goodbye, ect ect. but I've only heard the cd Grace.

Concerning his death, I've always heard he drowned. I was looking stuff up about him last night and I never heard it was a suicide only they never really gave details about how he drowned. It just said he went swimming fully clothed in a small part near the Mississippi and got pulled down by the undertow. I was on this website of a really big fan and I was really moved by it.

From http://www.intimateaudio.com/tributes.jeff_buckley.html
Way back in February of 1995 (or thereabouts), a friend of mine named Marianne invited me to go see a performance of this “guy signed to Columbia” that she went to high school with...Believing it wasn't something “up my alley,” after much procrastination, I informed my friend that I “wouldn't be able to make it.” In a few short years, I would realize how much of a mistake my decision was...Some time after May 29, 1997, I began noticing in several trade publications and entertainment-oriented magazines (e.g., Entertainment Weekly, Rolling Stone, etc.) that “rising star Jeff Buckley drowned in Memphis, Tennessee's Wolf River, after going for a swim, fully-clothed, with his boots on.” Something to that effect, anyway. I thought, “Hmm... I think that's that one guy?!” ...Around that time, while at a record store in San Diego, I noticed a few Sketches CDs in a rack. I picked it up, looked it over, bought it, brought it home, and let it sit on a shelf for a month...During the time I let those two discs spin, I never heard one single melodic cliché, recycled guitar riff, “borrowed” chord progression, or predictable/pointless lyric. Jeff Buckley's music was a breath of fresh air to me...Really, I can't even begin to tell you how much I feel I owe him...

I'm really excited to see an appreciate thread for Jeff Buckley. I was on a kick a few weeks ago of his. If you don't have the legacy edition of Live at Sin-e I recommend. I love listening to his live stuff. Soooo good.

Peace and much love,
Nicole

P.S.
The song I'm really stuck on right now is 'Everybody Here Wants You'

Maliejandra!!! You like most of the stuff i like! I absolutely love Jeff Buckley. He is so soothing and yet so real that it's almost scary. He sings so easily, and his voice haunts, it really does. I own the CD Grace and it is a masterpeice. Hallelujah = a miracle.

As for his death i don't believe it was a suicide. Strangely enough his father died at the age of only 29. That really hit me hard, harder than just hearing about Jeff dying.

haha SilverDawn, we should chat. That's really cool.

I had my sister listening to Everybody Here Wants You and Hallelujah yesterday. Normally she likes mellow music but she said that his version of Hallelujah was too slow! And she said she didn't like his voice. I thought she'd like him. Oh well. My uncle said that with Jeff, it's like you get it or you don't. I feel sorry for those that don't.

My sister and I are in love with Grace (the CD) but none of our friends have even heard of him. My favorite song on the album is 'Lover you should have come over.' I think it's perfect. I love when he does that little squeal thing toward the end. And I think his version f Hallelujah is the best I've ever heard and it almost makes me cry. Now I need to move on to his other CD's I guess.

He has no other official CD's. He has many EP's and some live stuff, but no other official releases. Just thought i'd let you know.

Sketches from My Sweetheart the Drunk, while released posthumously, gives fans new material rather than the repetitiveness of the live albums or EPs. While half of the 2 disc set is obviously not a polished, finished product, the album is brilliantly beautiful. I guess since it is new, original material, I never considered it anything but an official release...even if Buckley was deceased at the time.

My favorite J. Buckley songs are Last Goodbye, Satisfied Mind, and Everybody Here Wants You.

ETA: I'm depressed because I'm moving next week, and all my cds are packed. I'd like to listen to some Buckley now.
