Bon Iver #1: "It's the sound of the unlocking and the lift away"

Welcome to the 1st Bon Iver appreciation thread!

Info:
Bon Iver is the name of indie folk singer-songwriter Justin Vernon’s current band and most notable music project to date. Currently the band also consists of Mike Noyce and Sean Carey. The name ‘Bon Iver’ (pronounced “ee-VEHR”) is a play on the French phrase ‘bon hiver’ for ‘good winter’. Vernon independently released Bon Iver’s debut album, For Emma, Forever Ago in 2007, the majority of which was recorded while spending four months in a remote cabin in Wisconsin.

While in high school and college, Vernon founded bands Mount Vernon and DeYarmond Edison, both indie-rock bands from Eau Claire, Wisconsin, where he still resides.

Vernon’s self-released debut as Bon Iver garnered critical acclaim, and was picked up by the indie-rock label Jagjaguwar, which gave the album a proper release on February 19th, 2008. The album was released in the UK and Europe by iconic indie 4AD on May 12, 2008.

When released in the UK, For Emma, Forever Ago received 5/5 and “Album of the Month” reviews in both MOJO and Uncut magazines. It is currently the third highest rated album of 2008 on review-aggregator site Metacritic, with accolades from publications including The Village Voice, The Hartford Courant and The A.V. Club.

Great thread! 'For Emma, Forever Ago' is a wonderful album. It was my 3rd favourite album of 2008.

I love this guy. Not as in romantically, I mean that I love his music. I have both FE,FA and Blood Bank. And they're just awesome. Great thread.

I still haven't listened to Blood Bank! I should really get it, though.

I wanted to make clear my love for him is only professional. Not in a personal scale.

You should. It only has got 4 songs, but they are as amazing as the ones at For Emma.

I'll add it to my list. It's quite a priority, though, since it's only 4 songs and it's Bon Iver.
Anyway... what's your favourite song from FE,FA?

Mine is also Re:Stacks. I like it because of its simplicity. Well, it's maybe not a good argument since all songs by Bon Iver are simple. But this one is EVEN more basic because it only features his acoustic guitar and him, and it has a melody that repeats throughout the song so it's catchy and easy to memorize. It has a very definite structure.

I also adore Lump Sum because it has a defined rhythm and is played at a faster pace than the rest of the songs. And I just love the eerie sounds in the beginning.

And I like 'Woods' too. Which is a song featured on Blood Bank, and it's probably the most minimal thing he's ever done. It features his voice and a vocoder that changes his voice like a synth. It reminds me a bit of Fleet Foxes's a capella songs.

Blood Bank is a good song, but I'm not so much a fan of the other songs on that EP. For Emma Forever Ago is amazing all through.

I love Bon Iver. i just recently started listening probably just about a month ago? I was super happy that Woods was featured in Skins.. love that show. lol. That's probably my favorite song, too. It's so simple, i love how the same verse is sang over and over throughout the whole song, yet it doesn't et boring. It just builds up and it's beaaauuutilfuul

now that's the way to use a vocoder. lol.
