Ben Kweller's New Album-On My Way

New album comes out tomorrow. I already got mine in the mail Saturday (preordered it off his website).

I absolutely love Ben's first album Sha Sha but I have to be honest and say that I'm disappointed in his new album.

I would love to hear other's opinions of his new album or anything Ben-related. I am most likely going to see him in concert this Saturday night in Boston.

Oh nooooo, don't tell me you're disappointed in it, I've been looking forward to it being released for MONTHS!

I too love his first one, but couldn't pre-order because I live in the UK... I'm hoping I'll be able to get my mitts on it this week.

It's had good reviews in the British music press, how is it different from Sha Sha?

It was recorded to sound very retro, kind of like the Strokes album. Very bare sounding and stripped down, which I don't think does justice to his music.

And the big thing is that the songs just aren't as catchy or well written. It still has some pretty good stuff on it, but it pales in comparison to Sha Sha/ Others may think differently, though. I've listened to it 3 or 4 times now and it doesn't grab me like his first CD.

His first CD did indeed grab me - after the first listen I couldn't stop. I'm feeling panicked now. I'm off out later so I'm going to try and pick it up - I'll be back with my thoughts in a day or two!

I got tickets to see Ben live this Friday night with Death Cab for Cutie in Providence, RI. Will be my first time seeing Ben live, although I've had a few other opportunities but no one who wanted to go with me.

I saw him in London last December. Fantastiiiiiic! He played a few new ones back then I seem to remember but that was before I had Sha Sha so I couldn't really tell you now which ones.

I'm getting On My Way today, my mum is picking it up for me on her way home :-)

Eh, seems it's not out here until 19th April. Boo.

I just got it today. I like it. But definitely not as much as Sha Sha. Sha Sha is pretty much my favorite CD ever...On My Way is definitely less catchy. And I wish there was more piano, I'm on the 4th to last song and there's only been one so far.

I'm seeing him w/ Death Cab on Monday night in Philly. I saw him last April, too, and he was really good. I guess he'll be playing mostly his new songs, though, which is a little disappointing.

From what I've read, more than half the songs he's playing on this tour are still from his first album.

That's good to hear. The last two times he's played down here, I'd wanted to go but always backed out. Now my friend likes him too, so we were hoping to go in May.

I didn't even know he had a new CD coming out until I saw the ad in Target on Sunday.

He played most of his old stuff in London in December.

Eugh, I can't tell you how gutted I am about your reviews... I 've been SO looking forward to it - the piano / guitar mix was my favourite thing about Sha Sha.

*weep*

For everyone going to the Death Cab tour... are you getting there early/sticking around (I think the order switches from city to city) to see Death Cab For Cutie? What's that, yes?! Ah, good. You'll love them.

I looooooved Sha Sha when it first came out, but to be honest I haven't given BK a whole lot of thought since last time I saw him a little over a year ago. I have to be really inspired to want to listen to him, and it hasn't struck me recently. I am definitely curious to hear the new album, though.

Death Cab won't be at any of the Southern California shows, except for Coachella. They'll be going up to Canada instead when BK is down here.

They're playing 2nd on Monday (I think) and I was considering leaving after BK was done (I have to get up at 5:30 the next day and function properly, after all.) But my friend burned me a CD of The Photo Album and Transatlanticism and I decided they're worth sticking around for.

I'm also kind of sad that OMW isn't all fun and polka dotted like Sha Sha.

Friday night Ben Kweller is closing the show but I'll be there for both acts. I haven't been too impressed with what I've heard from Death Cab, but I'll definitely give them a chance. My girlfriend burned some of their songs onto a CD and we'll listen to it on our ride down to Providence.
