| Belle & Sebastian #2: Beautifully Out Of Time Belle & Sebastian Appreciation Thread ![]() Fanart by: Lia Cunha Belle and Sebastian is a band from Glasgow led by guitarist/vocalist Stuart Murdoch. The seven-piece band has an intimate, majestic sound that is equal parts folk-rock and ‘60s pop. Murdoch has a gift for not only whimsy and surrealism, but also for odd, unsettling lyrical detail which keeps the songs grounded in a tangible reality. | Oh, it's so preeettttttyyyy! Terrific intro, David! Carrying over the convo from the last thread, the BBC "Seymour Stein" was also good, a real improvement on the original IMO. And, yeah, "Like Dylan..." is tricky -- the thing is, it's such a strong song that it's just incredibly hard to get it wrong, you know? (Apologies for the unintentional rhymes, hee.) It's just different, is all, and it is neat to get a heavier, more rock-sounding version. I've actually heard another live version, from IYFS: Live at the Barbican, and that sounds totally different from the other two, in this case slower and softer. Actually, the Barbican recording has probably my favorite version of the outro, with horn and heavier strings, and a few seconds of solo guitar at the very end...really, really gorgeous. Oh, and I was pathetically excited a couple of weeks ago to have two questions answered by Stevie on the website! (It's the entry from Jacquelyn, of course.) __________________ music heard so deeply That it is not heard at all, but you are the music While the music lasts | |||

| Thank you! I'm glad you like it. It's very simple, but I think it looks good. And I tried to make it look at least a little bit like the Official site, which is amazing. That's awesome that they answered your question, Jacquelyn! And great questions. I love Sarah writing songs. 'Nothing in the Silence' is so pretty. And just like the other songs Sarah wrote, it's kind of innocent. She's amazing.__________________ "Grace is what matters. In anything, especially life, especially growth, tragedy, pain, love, death. | I love Sarah's songwriting style, though I was surprised to find out that Stuart actually wrote "Heaven in the Afternoon," because it just sounds so much like her others, with, as you said, that sort of innocent quality to the lyrics. I also just love the vocals on her songs, not just with her lead vocals, but her harmonizing with Stuart, as well. Sort of an inversion of the harmonizing we get on Stuart-sung songs like "Dress Up In You," heh. __________________ music heard so deeply That it is not heard at all, but you are the music While the music lasts | |||

| I love her writing style too. And her voice sounds perfect when combined with Stuart's. Just like Isobel's. ![]() __________________ "Grace is what matters. | Oh, I love all that harmonizing with Isobel, too, especially in "Mary Jo" and "Sleep the Clock Around." I'm also rather partial to Isobel's lead efforts; love "Is It Wicked Not to Care?" and "The Gate," and I'm liking quite a bit of her solo work, too (mainly her two albums as The Gentle Waves, and Milk White Sheets -- not so crazy about her work with Mark Lanegan, though). So it sounds, from the Q&As, like Stevie's working on a solo album. Not sure how I feel about that; he's done some things with the band that I love, like his Storytelling tracks, "The Wrong Girl"/"Wrong Love," and, most of all, "Jonathan David," but then he's also had some misses. Also, one of the things I always enjoy in his songs are the harmonies once Stuart enters and things get vaguely Simon & Garfunkel-esque, so I'd miss that a bit. __________________ music heard so deeply That it is not heard at all, but you are the music While the music lasts | |||

| Man, I need to get more of Isobel's solo stuff. Her voice is amazing and I really like the songs I have of her singing solo, but I never got around to downloading any full albums or anything. I like Stevie and I think he's capable of recording a good album. I mean, we can't expect anything like B&S, especially because if he's having this side solo project, then it's probably because he wants to do something different than what he does in B&S. I guess we'll have to wait and see if his album will be any good. I'm listening to a lot of Tullycraft lately! Do you guys know them? ![]() __________________ "Grace is what matters. | It's so much easier to keep this thread afloat when there are more than two posters, heh. I've actually heard a couple of Stevie's new songs on youtube, and I particularly like this one here called "Umbrella." I'm sure he'll put together a pretty nice album, it'll just be...different. I'll get it either way, and probably wind up loving half the songs and being unsure of the others, hee. Never heard Tullycraft before, but giving them a once-over in iTunes, they certainly have some intriguing song titles. That's some motivation to look into them further, heh. __________________ music heard so deeply That it is not heard at all, but you are the music While the music lasts | |||

| This thread is moving very slowly I haven't listened to a lot of B&S lately, and I think that Gwen hasn't either so we haven't got much to discuss. But I was just listening to Nothing In The Silence with my headphones for the first time and WOW, dude. It's just a wonderful song. It's just amazing the shyness, the innocence and the softness in Sarah's voice. Plus, the solo in the middle is beautiful. Oh, cool. I'll check some of his songs on YouTube, I still haven't listened to any of his solo songs! __________________ "Grace is what matters. | Yikes. (Of course, I'm the one who's taken a month to post something again here, so... )Well, it's not exactly a new B&S song, but the Dark Was the Night compilation does include a new song by Stuart (with assistance from Stevie and Mick), "Another Saturday," which has received quite a few listens from me over the last two days. I've also been on a big The Life Pursuit kick for the past couple of weeks, and, though it was my first B&S album, it's just now really growing on me, and I'm thinking it's joined with If You're Feeling Sinister to overtake the "fave B&S album" position that TBWtAS once held. I could still do without "White Collar Boy," "Sukie in the Graveyard," and "Song for Sunshine" (though, I had a few odd days where I kept listening to that one despite not really liking it...), but the others are great and the whole thing just holds together so well. The sounds are diverse, yet there's an overall mood that connects the songs. I'm not the only person who's been listening to TLP of late, but I'll have to see if I can convince him to stop in here again briefly, heh. __________________ music heard so deeply That it is not heard at all, but you are the music While the music lasts | |||

| Not that anyone else necessarily cares, heh, but: God Help the Girl AKA what Stuart (and everyone else, actually, though I didn't spot Sarah in the video, but I assume she was involved, too) has been doing during the B&S hiatus. I'd prefer a new B&S, but the first song sounds pretty good, and Catherine Ireton has a lovely voice. __________________ music heard so deeply That it is not heard at all, but you are the music While the music lasts | |||

| Not a huge fan of double posting, but these cracked me up. A German fan named Christoph has set out to recreate all of B&S's album covers using...Legos. My favorite: Original: ![]() Legofied: ![]() I personally can't wait for his take on 3...6...9 Seconds of Light, just because it's my favorite B&S album cover, but I'm also sure The Life Pursuit will be...interesting. __________________ music heard so deeply That it is not heard at all, but you are the music While the music lasts | |||

| Wow, it's been a long time since I posted here. Jacquelyn, the lego cover doesn't show up here... So, what did you guys think of God Help The Girl? __________________ "Grace is what matters. | You can't imagine my astonishment upon seeing this thread on Page 1 again yesterday, hee. Hmm, wonder why the pic didn't show up (it's visible on my comp)? Going to ask another poster if he can see it... So far I've only heard one track from God Help the Girl, "Come Monday Night," though I haven't checked the project's MySpace in awhile to see if any of the still-unreleased tracks have been posted there (nothing's available on the official site besides CMN). On the basis of that first single, it sounds pretty good; not quite Belle & Sebastian level, but it's still Stuart's musical and lyrical style, which is something. And the vocals are great. But I'm admittedly happiest by Stuart's comment on the GHtG site that he's ready to return his attentions to B&S, and that this side project was like a "pipe cleaner for the musical brain." Between this and Stevie probably exploring new things with his solo project (and Sarah's new endeavors sewing handbags -- hey, it's always amazing how finding a new creative outlet can help with other kinds of creativity. Plus, I happen to own and cherish a few of her wares, so I'm glad she's doing it, hee), I can't wait to hear what kind of sounds they could come up with as a band in the next few years. ![]() __________________ music heard so deeply That it is not heard at all, but you are the music While the music lasts | |||

I don't have much else to say other than I have "She's Losing It'" stuck in my head at the moment. And I'm getting back into a musical mood! CO's new album, here I come. Quote:
