Lime Jello Marshmallow Cottage Cheese Surprise -- William Bolcom & Joan Morris

Lately I group I follow on Facebook has been publishing a bunch of Jello recipes from the 1950s. Some of them are so bizarre that I'm convinced that they were meant to be looked at, like pieces of art, rather than eaten. Someone published one yesterday that had blocks of colored glass in it.

Reading through some 1950s recipes makes me realize how different cuisine was in the U.S. back then. Before World War II, there wasn't a lot of foreign influence except in the high-end restaurants. A lot of Americans were simply eating for nourishment -- they prepared meals using whatever was on hand, and except for baking, there wasn't a lot of thought given to recipes or ingredients. My parents were in college together in the early 1950s. My mom told me once about one of my father's professors inviting them over to his house for dinner. He served them pizza. My parents had never seen a pizza before. Mom said it was embarrassing because they didn't know how to eat it.

^ You might already know this, but in English, that's an expression that means "drunk".

In Dutch we also say "hij was in de wind" ("he was in the wind"). It's kinda similar.

I like the French expression for having a hangover, "j'ai mal aux chaeveux", which literally translates to "my hair hurts".

I had not learned that other expression. Funny.

Zip City -- Drive-By Truckers

Zip City is an actual town in Alabama, on the Tennessee border. Legend says that, back when Alabama had very restrictive laws regarding alcoholic beverages, the town got its name from drivers who "zipped" through to go to Tennessee to buy liquor.
