They were young. Brennan was 15, Russ 19. That was a lot for Russ to take on. And so because Brennan was grieving an everyone was telling Russ that he couldn't do it, he listened.. And it would lead to a lot to Brennan's issues, especially as she would see in cases of examples of families staying together despite loss of parents.
I totally get why Russ did it but I can see why Brennan gave him a hard time over it. Their parents disappeared and before she knew it, she was in the system. And probably even more than normal, put her nose into the books and became as accomplished as she could because of her feeling of abandonment and relishing in her smarts. Until Booth came along and poked and proded to gain a bond with her, and her world opened and it led her to be able to accept the past, and start to come to terms with it. __________________
