Thanks for that B.

I don't know what they were thinking either then.

-Bianca- 09-11-2011 05:49 AM

I could understand if someone just sees the trailers and maybe is mistaken when they go to the theater, but if someone is seeing it at TIFF (critically, rushing, etc.), you'd think they'd almost certainly be more 'on it', don't you?

Ryan Gosling Thinks He's 'Weird Looking,' Credits REO Speedwagon For 'Drive' Being Made - Starpulse.com

Quote:

I've already seen "Drive," but I can't wait to see it again. Ryan Gosling, who plays a guy who drives cars for the movies and for the mob, is having an amazing year (see also: July's "Crazy, Stupid, Love" and "The Ides of March" below), and "Drive" suggests further dimensions of his talent. In this suspenseful, romantic melodrama, heavily influenced by thrillers of the early '80s, he makes like Steve McQueen, all silent and decisive and sexy. (Sept. 16)

This film kicks off with a dazzling set piece that lays the groundwork for a unique action thriller, but unfortunately the filmmakers fail to follow through and unique becomes clichéd and action becomes gory. But there are enough thrilling moments to keep the adrenalin pumping and experiencing Gosling do broody is definitely a thrill all of its own.

DRIVE - Century City Review - Century City News
Quote:

"Drive" is, aesthetically speaking, an early Michael Mann movie. It's a small doomed little character piece, with Ryan Gosling giving a great movie star performance, self-aware and stylized to an extreme.

...

"Drive" is beautifully made, beautifully acted, and it casts a strong mood while you're watching it. I think the film is ultimately a small noir exercise, though, and I don't think it's going to be for everyone. It is hyperviolent in places, in momentary splashes of red and grey matter, and after the screening I attended, there were a few people still vocally upset by it in the elevator. They were unprepared, and I think people who only know Gosling from his few mainstream moments, fans of "The Notebook" or his airbrushed abs in "Crazy Stupid Love," might not be ready for something this jet-black. This is the Gosling who played a Jewish neo-Nazi in "The Believer," the guy who uses these bland, sad-eyed good looks to hide something ugly and awful. In "Drive," he is beyond competent at the one thing he does well. No one drives like him. He's like Senna from the documentary I just reviewed, alive and engaged behind a wheel, in tune with the mechanics and the road and the other drivers. Gosling drives a getaway early in the movie, and Refn shoots it brilliantly, showing just how good Gosling is. it's not just about speed but about judging things, making choices, figuring out when to drive and when to stop. It's mostly wordless stuff, but Refn luxuriates in the moments where Gosling is behind the wheel. It's hilarious to me that Refn doesn't drive in real life, because he fetishizes it here. He understands the allure of being at the helm of a powerful machine, making it do whatever you want it to do.

...

This is a film I'm sure I'll revisit several times, a movie that is simply a pleasure to observe. Refn's command of cinema is no less film geek specific than Tarantino's, but for some reason, no one's really called him on it the way they hammer Tarantino for quoting and borrowing. When I call this an early Michael Mann film, that's not a tough conclusion to reach. This film feels like "Thief" and "Manhunter," and the soundtrack here is a definite nod to the sounds of those films. Even with that feeling somewhat overt, though, "Drive" really is a lovely step in what is rapidly becoming one of the most interesting international filmographies. I can't wait to see Refn take on the world of Thai-boxing in Bangkok with Gosling for his next one "Only God Forgives," and I hope this is the beginning of a long and bloody relationship.

Review: Ryan Gosling cranks up the cool in Refns remarkable thriller Drive - HitFix.com

DRIVE (USA) is the standout with Ryan Gosling out-cooling the king of cool, Steve McQueen. Absolutely thrilled to watch the entertainment lawyer sitting beside me squirm and hide her eyes and practically leap from her seat through much of the film’s outrageously graphic violence.

Directed by flamboyant Danish filmmaker Nicolas Winding Refn (The Pusher Trilogy)and adapted from the James Sallis bestseller, Drive both dazzles and disorients with its constant murky vehicular menace, that smoothly meshes with the story's more psychopathic interior impulses. As double when not triple crosses ensue, and resolved on occasion via mutual slashing, and death by fork or assorted pizza implements.

And with Refn firmly, playfully in the driver's seat of this flashy, smartly evasive, but style over much too subdued substance narrative. Keeping audiences as visually dazed within the reality playing out on screen, as his hopelessly irreversible body double protagonist - who has seen too many thrillers, or rather been in them - a big screen identity theft con man profoundly conned by the movies.

Drive tv spot on during the Jets v. Cowboys game on NBC tonight. Wow - not used to seeing Ryan on guy tv, lol.

-Bianca- 09-12-2011 07:13 AM

I saw that as well and was glad to see it. That was the first ad I can remember seeing on TV, honestly.

New York's David Edelstein didn't like it. That Nicolas Cage/Drive Angry reference is just... SMH.

Drive features great performances -- especially from Gosling -- and from the supporting cast, which includes Ron Perlman, Bryan Cranston, Albert Brooks and Christina Hendricks.

Just note that if you can’t handle gore, this movie definitely isn’t for you. The amount of guts and blood featured in Drive can rival the amount featured in a Quentin Tarantino movie. But if you can handle it, odds are you’ll love Drive.

LOL at Ryan's, "why is he holding a duck." That's obviously a baby goose/gosling hahaha. Love him laughing at it though.

I want to see the Ryan/Nick Moviefone interview. Where is that sucker?

David Edelstein is clearly cracked out. My review - just my thoughts... so no spoilers, I think:

Went to a Drive screening tonight followed by a Q&A with Nick and producer Mark Platt.
What can I say... it was bad ass. Beautifully shot, interesting direction, amazeballs sound editing. Ryan's role in this felt very different from anything he's done before. He's gorgeous, still, badass, sweet, menacing and innocent at different times throughout the film.
One of the opening sequences is so well shot/paced - it almost gave me a heart attack. Great driving sequences.
Honorable mention to Albert Brooks who a delivers one line in the movie that is so chillingly non-chalant, it gave me goosebumps. I literally said omg out loud in the theater.

Nick was awesome and hilarious btw - he talked for nearly an hour after the movie - told some great stories. I ran into him afterward outside while hailing a cab (I'm in NYC and we had a long convo about Bronson and how much he digs NY because "it's so *****ing sexy." LOL.
I'll shut up now... but wanted to share my thoughts with y'all. Not for everyone, I think - but this stuff is totally my bag, so I loved it.

heaven85 09-13-2011 10:52 PM

Sounds awesome!

It's a screening. So excited will fill u guys in my thoughts when I see it

-Bianca- 09-14-2011 02:42 AM

Interesting to hear your thoughts on it!

A bit of a weird question:

Spoiler:

starr_00 09-14-2011 06:18 AM

That moment is so quick - you don't really pick it apart. It works with what happens right before it, I thought.

ETA: Moviefone Unscripted interview with Ryan and Nick is out:

Haha! So awesomely weird, those two. And yes, I am the a**hole who asked the Chuck Norris question. I'm kind of ashamed of myself, LOL.

heaven85 09-15-2011 01:05 AM

Cool. Thanks for that. Will read it tomorrow.

-Bianca- 09-15-2011 03:01 AM

 @ "You'd think Jesus would already know."

Cool that you got your question answered! It played well into their vibe, actually.

Mint Magazine: "The movie cinema’s been waiting for."

YAM Magazine: "It’s a brilliant piece of cinema, full of tension, love, blood, and driving."

Den of Geek: "It fulfils almost all its duties as a genre film, delivering the tensions, confrontations and violent resolutions that a larger audience might expect, while also serving as an unusual and arrestingly individual piece of filmmaking."
