She's on top again
Rachel McAdams reclaims her Hollywood "It" girl status.

By Rebecca Louie
Rachel McAdams

It's lunchtime in East Harlem with Harrison Ford and Diane Keaton. Actress Rachel McAdams, on a break from shooting a movie with her elder co-stars, is trying to refocus her attention amid a crush of cast and crew members squeezed into a church basement doubling as a cafeteria.

"Let's be honest," McAdams says bluntly, midway through a conversation about her non-linear career trajectory. "I was totally terrified that I would never get back on track and I would never work again."

McAdams, 30, is reflecting on the surprising gap in her résumé. Just when she started to become an A-list star -- with back-to-back hit movies, including 2004's "The Notebook" and 2005's "Wedding Crashers" -- she all but vanished from the scene.

Now, the doe-eyed darling is back, working harder than ever. She appears as the tragically besotted heroine opposite Eric Bana in the adaptation of best-selling hanky-wringer "The Time Traveler's Wife," out Aug. 14. Earlier this year, she starred with Russell Crowe and Ben Affleck in the thriller "State of Play." And this winter, she shares the billing with Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law in "Sherlock Holmes." Plus, there's "Morning Glory," the film she has been shooting with Ford and Keaton, which is due out next year.

Known for playing the Everygirl consumed by love opposite a series of toe-curling cuties, McAdams laughs as she admits, "It sounds terrible, but [the hot factor of her leading men] wears off so quickly. You have to get to the point where you trust each other so that you go to friendship pretty fast."

Not so with earnest indie heartthrob Ryan Gosling, McAdams' "Notebook" co-star and on-and-off fellow until last fall. Since their split, the paparazzi has snapped her smooching, biking and attending kundalini yoga classes ("it gets all of the cobwebs out, clears your head and opens up your imagination") with actor Josh Lucas, who recently gushed that "there's nothing like being in love in New York City."

McAdams isn't as forthcoming. When asked about Lucas, the chatty, sometimes wry actress falls silent for several moments, then says carefully, "I try really hard not to comment when it comes to matters of the heart."

Still, she says, she always has dreamed of having kids, and "ideally, I'd like to be married to the father."

Raised by a truck driver dad and nurse mom in Canada (who "are still very much in love," she says admiringly), the former competitive figure skater says that if she had any other career, it would be in the food industry. "Feeding people is such an intimate experience," says McAdams, who hawked burgers and fries at McDonald's for three years before hitting it big. "When you share a meal, it goes into a person's self -- it blows my mind. I'd love to work on a farm ... if it wasn't such hard labor."

McAdams' agri-lust grows from her passion for the environment, which she writes about on greenissexy.org. Observes co-star Bana: "She lives true to her theories, a very green, responsible life." Although McAdams gave up vegetarianism (among her reasons: "I needed to be a lot more diligent; it's a lot of work ... "), she purchases green power for her home in Toronto, rides a bike and unplugs appliances.

Ultimately, McAdams is just trying to "go with the flow" in this "new phase" in her life. Her advice: "Relax and enjoy the ride because it's so out of your control anyway."

Why she's HOT!

Has three big movies in the works, including the big-screen version of the best-seller "The Time Traveler's Wife," opening Aug. 14.

Received the Female Star of the Year Award at this year's ShoWest Convention for movie distributors.

Left 'em begging for more after her on- and off-screen romance with co-star Ryan Gosling in 2004's "The Notebook."

Next up: co-stars with Robert Downey Jr. in the movie "Sherlock Holmes," which opens Christmas Day.

Rachel McAdams is The Time Traveler's Wife

By Jamie Portman, Canwest News Service
NEW YORK - There's something disarming about the way Canada's Rachel McAdams describes her choice of wardrobe this morning. It's a colourful off-one- shoulder creation so clinging that it requires her to seat herself very carefully at the interview table.

Asked to identify the dress, she hesitates. "I don't know how to pronounce it," she says helplessly. She then cautiously identifies the designer as Abaete - and she hopes that just maybe she got the pronunciation right.

This simple candour reminds us that there's another Rachel McAdams lurking behind this elegantly turned-out star presence. It's the Rachel McAdams who maintains a successful Hollywood career while continuing to live in Toronto. And again, her endearing side emerges when she talks about the joys of filming The Time Traveler's Wife there and of actually being able to go home every night after work.

But she also had the uncanny impression of coping with two different existences.

"I mean it's a really nice gift - to just roll from work right to bed. But at the same time you're responsible for more because you're living two lives. You have your work life and you have your regular life, and you have to come home and clean the toilet and go buy groceries. But when you're working on location, you're just sort of immersed in your work, and it's different."

She's refreshingly matter-of-fact about her choice of home. "Hollywood stays in touch with you," she once commented, and the proof is there in the many hit films she has done over the years - Mean Girls, The Notebook, Wedding Crashers, The Family Stone. In fact, Hollywood is so anxious to stay in touch that it paid her $4 million to appear in her new film, The Time Traveler's Wife.

It can be tricky to maintain the balance between her two worlds - but she has managed to make it work. "It seems to get easier the more that you get into it. I think living in Canada really helps me personally because I can just step away from the business."

At 30, she's now enjoying the most exciting year of her career. A few months ago, she was winning excellent reviews for her work as an ambitious young newspaper reporter in the political thriller, State Of Play. This Christmas, she'll be opening in one of 2009's most anticipated films - British director Guy Ritchie's take on Sherlock Holmes. Finally there's this other hot property, The Time Traveler's Wife, which opens Aug. 14 with McAdams in the title role of a young woman involved in a love affair that transcends time.

5 Questions With: Rachel McAdams

She's tackled dramedy ('The Family Stone'), a Wes Craven thriller ('Red Eye') and one of the most sweepingly romantic movies of the last decade (you know you loved 'The Notebook') -- now Rachel McAdams is getting political.

In 'State of Play' -- based on a six-hour BBC TV series -- McAdams plays a plucky young newspaper blogger who teams with the paper's most seasoned reporter, Cal McAffrey (Russell Crowe), to investigate what appears to a huge political conspiracy.

Moviefone got McAdams to dish about working with Crowe and Helen Mirren, if she'd vote for co-star Ben Affleck in an election and her next big role of the year, opposite Robert Downey Jr. in 'Sherlock Holmes.' -- By Maggie Furlong

1. What made you want to do this, your first political thriller?
I was really excited to work with Kevin [MacDonald, the director]. I was excited to see what his interpretation of the story would be -- how he would turn six hours into two -- and I thought that the subject matter was really relevant. It's a world that we're all constantly dealing with in some way or another.

2. Where do you get your news? And what kind of research did you do to play this sassy journalist?

I don't get the newspaper -- I actually get [my news] from radio. It's just easier to multitask. I can make breakfast and hear the news at the same time. [Laughs] We were introduced to a lot of the journalists at the Washington Post and went on Capitol Hill and got to shadow some people directly. There was also a gentleman from the Washington Post who came and was on set with us at all times, which was great. Every so often he'd poke his head in and say, "Um, that would never happen." [But] there were times when we vetoed him. It's Hollywood! [Laughs]

3. This was such an amazing cast -- your on-screen relationship with Russell Crowe was very sweet. What was it like working with him ... and with the fabulous Helen Mirren?
Yeah, she's always so solid, and what I loved about her is she's obviously a classy woman, but she's really playful and really fun to be around. Yeah, she's a real pro. Just the nature of being a fly on the wall with Russell and Helen and watching the two of them interact and put their scenes together ... it was just mesmerizing to see the two of them work together. [And] he's really the same. He's very playful on set, and he just likes to have a good time. And he's really, really smart -- he is a formidable person, but I think that's what makes him so great. I learned a lot from watching him.

4. Ben Affleck plays a congressman in the movie. He's talked about running for office before -- now that you know him, could you imagine him doing it?

Yeah, I mean, I hope he does go into politics. I think he would be great. And I think he'd be a real asset to the country. I cannot [vote] -- no Canadians. [But] I would vote for Ben [if I could]. I would wear a big "Vote for Ben" sticker. [Laughs]

5. And you're also playing "the woman," Irene Adler, in the new 'Sherlock Holmes.' movie with Robert Downey Jr. -- she's said to be the only one who could ever outwit Holmes. Did you two have fun working together?

Robert's so great to work with ... he's so spontaneous and present and also very playful and very smart. So, yeah, he really kept me on my toes, which is the same sort of relationship with [Holmes and] Irene. They keep each other on their toes, and they challenge each other, and they get each other out of scrapes -- and get each other into scrapes.

Rachel was quite charming and charismatic as usual on Jimmy Fallon. She had some pretty funny stories to tell. Have you tried going on IMDB on Rachel's page (click here) or HULU? Hope it works.

She looks adorable on the TODAY Show! And I really love the new Marie Claire spread; she's so photogenic!

Thanks for the links!

It was a fun interview. The ghost story was hilarious. "Rachel, don't turn me off."

Rachel McAdams and actor boyfriend Josh Lucas were spotted looking very cozy at NYC’s Orchard Street eatery Little Giant on Wednesday (April 15).

“They blended in with the regular hipsters,” a spywitness tells Page Six. “They were smitten kittens and spent most of the meal making out. At one point, she rested her head right next to him on the pillows
lining the windowsill.”

Q&A: Spotlight on Rachel McAdams
The ''Time Traveler's Wife'' star on chick flicks, Eric Bana's hair, and (almost) meeting Michael Caine
By Karen Valby

EW When did you fall in love with The Time Traveler's Wife?
RACHEL MCADAMS Someone handed me the big old hardback, and I just ate it up. It was hard to read, though, because I knew they were going to make it as a film. So the whole time I was thinking, ''Would this work? Could I be this character?''

EW The movie was originally supposed to come out last year. Why the delay?
RM We were waiting for Eric's hair to grow to do reshoots. Eric had gone off and played the villain in Star Trek and had to shave his head. It was just one of those things.

EW Are you worried about the male audience dismissing this as a chick flick?
RM That's such a misnomer that comes with love stories. I mean, who are we kidding? A guy loves a good love story as much as a girl. I can't tell you the number of guys who come up to me and confess that they cried during The Notebook. They have to get it off their chest! ''I didn't go into it willingly, but I really loved it.''

EW Recently, you accepted ShoWest's Female Star of the Year award. Did you have to give a speech?
RM My shoes were too big, so I was more worried about them coming off than what I was going to say. I always forget about that walk up to the podium. I had chosen a really short dress and really high heels, so the whole time I was thinking, ''My wardrobe is not appropriate!'' But it was a really nice show. I've never met Michael Caine, and he was there. I still didn't get to meet him, but I was about 10 feet away. So I've gotten this much closer.
