Frozen Thread #4: It's Melting Records Everywhere

Quote:
In Frozen, a prophecy traps a kingdom in eternal winter, so Anna (Bell) must team up with Kristoff, a daring mountain man, on the grandest of journeys to find the Snow Queen (Menzel) and put an end to the icy spell. Encountering Everest-like extremes, mystical creatures and magic at every turn, Anna and Kristoff battle the elements in a race to save the kingdom from destruction.

The movie will have a musical element with original songs by Broadway’s Robert Lopez (a two-time Tony winner for Avenue Q and The Book of Mormon) and wife Kristen Anderson-Lopez (who worked with him on Disney’s 2011 Winnie the Pooh.) The digitally animated feature will open in November 2013 and is being directed by Chris Buck (Tarzan, Surf’s Up) and produced by Peter Del Vecho (Winnie the Pooh, The Princess and the Frog).

Box Office: Disney's 'Frozen' Tops $400M - Forbes

Boxofficemojo

Frozen (2013) - Box Office Mojo

Total Lifetime Grosses
Domestic: $400,024,000 35.3%
+ Foreign: $733,407,000 64.7%
= Worldwide: $1,133,431,000

============================================

That overseas total is from last weekend. Japan did another 6.2m during the weekdays, an increase from the previous week and Saturday estimates have Frozen dropping just -1% in admissions from last Saturday, but with the addition of the 3D dubbed version ticket price average is higher and Frozen is increasing in dollars this weekend. Weekend estimates range from 8.4m to 9m (last weekend was about 8.3m).

It's Golden Week in Japan and Frozen is in overdrive. Frozen posted it's biggest single day in Japan on Tuesday (in its 8th week) and today is massive as well, it's up over 450% from Last Thursday. Golden week lasts until Tuesday so Frozen will be putting up big numbers until then. It should be around 145m by Sunday and 150m+ when Golden Week ends. It won't be long until it takes the #1 worldwide spot from Iron Man 3.

The soundtrack is also crushing all competition. It's notched its 12th non consecutive week at #1 and is projected to finish #1 again for its 13th week.

Frozen soundtrack is by far the biggest selling album of 2014.

Frozen is crushing it this weekend in Japan. Saturday estimates are around 6 million, which would be a new single day record for Frozen in Japan, beating the 5.6m Frozen did on Tuesday. If Sunday behaves like today we are looking at a $12 million eighth weekend. The biggest weekend Frozen has had up until now was 8.6m and its opening weekend was 7.5m (opening weekend is still its lowest weekend so far).
Someone in the Japan thread at boxoffice.com mentioned this will be the biggest 8th weekend number by a wide margin and I'm trying to find out what the 8th weekend record is.

A $12m weekend looks locked. Sunday is already the biggest day in Frozen's run and we only have the numbers up until 7 pm. Its biggest 2 days and biggest weekend coming in its 8th weekend, now that's impressive. Golden Week still has 2 days left before numbers go back to normal, although "normal" for Frozen in Japan is damned impressive.

So we are looking at a $12m weekend and $27m for the past week. The total as of today should be $145m-$146m and still going strong. At this point I can't see it missing $200m now, and nobody knows how high it could go.

Only 2 movies have ever made $200m in Japan, Spirited Away (230m) and Titanic (201.4m), Frozen should end up at least #2 all time for Japan with a real shot at #1 now. Not even the most optimistic Frozen fan envisioned numbers like this. Japan was the last market to get Frozen, it's only fitting that it has its most impressive run there, even more impressive than its $400m domestic and $76m in South Korea.

It really is unprecedented, as evidenced by just how much it broke the 8th weekend record.

Speaking of records...

Today's numbers are just, wow.

Today has already broken the record as Frozen's biggest single day as of the 7pm (Japan time) update (4th time that's happened in the last 6 days).

Yesterday Frozen had 96,537 admissions at the TOHO chain for the whole day, as of the 7 pm update frozen is already at 101,375 admissions today.
To put in context how big that number is, if Frozen passes 120,000 admissions with the evening numbers today will be bigger than its entire opening weekend in Japan.

Comparing today with yesterday's 7 pm update:

TOHO

Sunday - 83,153
Today - 101,373

KINEZO

Sunday - 20,401
Today - 27,317
