Yeah, maybe he was planning to surprise Lucas with it sometime, but when he found out his ballet might be taken away, he let it slip then

^ That's very likely. It seemed like the possibility of losing ballet loosened his tongue, and he couldn't keep it in anymore. All he wanted to do was to save it, no matter what.
