That makes sense because she has known him longer. I think Maya and Shawn have the potential to have a relationship completely separate and different. Which is good, she could use them both in her life.

No but sometimes it does. I think Cory and Topanga are very important in Maya's life as well in Shawn, but in different ways.

It does mean something in this case, not only have they known Maya longer, but they see her everyday, they help her with what's going on in her life, whether it's her grades or boy troubles. She's family to them.

Oh yes! That line in the pilot with her broke my heart and I knew I was very invested in her from there.
You could tell they cared. One of my favorite things was when Cory bought her those things that you mentioned. |

I just think about them so much sometimes, okay?
 I mean here's this little girl who's been in their daughter's life for all these years, and so in their lives, too, but there are still so many things she has protected, kept from them, things they haven't known, or maybe did know and chose not to bring up because they knew she didn't want to... and now she's finally feeling comfortable enough to share with them, like she's not afraid of what will happen if she does anymore...  __________________

Oh my gosh, I love that! I can imagine that was what it was like for Maya growing up around the Matthew's family. I love that she now feels comfortable to go to them about anything! __________________
