Lucas: What are you doing here, Zay?
Zay: Maybe I miss my best friend, okay? Maybe I had a friend in Texas and he moved away and I miss hanging out with him and I convinced my entire family to-
Lucas: Your dad got transferred?
Zay: Yeah, same as you.
Lucas: Look, I'm glad you're here, buddy but.. I don't want to keep being the same guy you knew in Texas.
Zay: Yeah. I'm not so sure you are.

^ Exactly. I can imagine many moments where Lucas was there for Zay and got him through a tough situation. That will probably be their dynamic for the rest of their lives.

^ Oh, for sure. I don't think their friendship would work if it was only one-sided. Zay must offer something that Lucas needs.

^ I think so too. There is no way Zay didn't mellow Lucas out when Lucas got upset. Zay certainly has a calming effect on people.

I'm sure Lucas and Zay found themselves in some pretty intense situations that were quickly diffused by Zay.

Yeah, I mean, sometimes Zay enjoyed making things a little awkward, but if he knew it wasn't fun for anyone, then he would take things in the other direction

^ I agree. Zay would definitely recognize when he would need to take things seriously if he doesn't want things to escalate.

Lucas was probably there to pull him back from the brink quite a few times in the beginning of their friendship. I'm sure Zay learned to recognize those signs after a few close calls, and he realized when he had to pull himself out of danger.

Yeah, it's the kind of thing that you don't really learn until you get it wrong a few times, but Zay has learned now
