I've thought that for a while too. Not just those quotes you've pointed out, but even Farkle & others had told Lucas that the right choice to make is the choice that keeps them all as friends. Which had to be Riley. She wouldn't be able to handle it at all if Lucas & Maya were together, whereas Maya would step back again in a heartbeat

When Lucas actually got to follow his heart, back in GM Upstate, he obviously chose Maya

^ I completely forgot about that! It's a valid thought that Lucas chose Riley because he knew that choosing Maya would have caused some tension/friction within the group. I'm always going to believe that there would come a time where Lucas would choose Maya and Riley would be okay with it.

Me too, that seemed like the journey that they all need to go on to become better people.

Not Riley gets what she wants & her view of the world isn't changed at all, while all of Maya's character growth gets destroyed...

^ For sure! I think they each were going to learn a lot about themselves and each other in season four and beyond, especially who they wanted to be with.

I don't get that part. Why did TPTB take them down that path?

Another thing that I just thought of to add to my list from before:

Lucas said that he could never hurt Maya.
Maya's tough and has been through so much that the only thing left that could possibly hurt her would be losing Riley and the Matthews.

Ooh, I love that so much! It was always great when they went up against each other. There was always a wonderful balance between them where they both got a chance to 'win' a battle of wits.

^ Right? Watching those early moments always made me think about how their dynamic would change when they became a couple. You can bet that there would be an even greater electric spark between them, because it would be so obvious how much they enjoyed battling wits.
