^ I think TPTB could have considered going in that direction if GMW hadn't been a Disney show where hope is key and dreams always come true. I would have been perfectly fine with either family dynamic. =)

I get that, I just don't like the idea that Maya & Katy were somehow a 'lesser' family or incomplete until a man could come along to fill that role of husband & father. A lot of single parent families are awesome the way that they are

^ Even though I can understand your view of the family dynamic, I didn't see it that way. I don't think Katy and Maya felt incomplete without a man playing the role of husband and father. It seemed like they all felt like a family without the label, but they felt so strongly about their dynamic that they wanted to make it official.

I can understand that, but the way Maya & Katy were portrayed & Riley's whole things about wanting to make Shawn Maya's dad rubbed me the wrong way

^ I'm starting to come around to your way of thinking. It makes me wonder what would have happened if Riley come up with her master plan to put Shawn on the path to becoming Maya's stepfather. Would they still have found their way to each other and become a family anyway? It's something that I'm now thinking about.

Hmm, I don't know actually. They definitely still would have met, because Shawn was becoming more & more invested in Maya, but I'm not sure what would have happened after that

^ Huh. That's a good point. Since Shawn and Katy were already unofficial members of the Matthews family, Shawn and Katy would have met eventually. Maybe the master plan sped things up.

I think that's possible, they would have got to meet & gotten to know each other anyway, so they probably would have got together too

^ It's kind of curious to me that they hadn't met until Riley put things in motion. I guess they were never both around for the same family gatherings.

That's true... but I think they kinda rewrote Katy's history a bit. It seemed like she didn't know Cory & Topanga that well at first (they didn't know that Maya's father had left until she told him, & he'd been gone for years), but then later on, it was as if they'd be really good friends since Riley & Maya had become friends

^ I didn't even notice that. That does explain why Katy and Shawn didn't meet until Maya's birthday. I'm not surprised that there was a bit of a re-write of the history. A lot of shows tend to do that. I wonder at what point TPTB decided to put these three characters in each other's orbits. =)

Yeah, there was some stuff that definitely didn't add up, so there's no way for us to really make sense of it

Still, I preferred it when they made everyone closer, much better feel for the show imo

^ It's tough for PTB to keep track of all the details, especially when a show goes on for so long. They're bound to mix things up, so I can understand it when they re-write things.

I agree. The show was all about family, so in my opinion, bringing people together and making them a family was the natural course of action. =)

Well, they show didn't go on that long really, so I do think the writers are at fault when it came to those inconsistencies

Time for a new thread

^ Yes, you're right. I guess it was hard for them to keep track of things, even if it was only three season worth of details.

Wow, you're right. What do you think of Because “Family is not defined by our genes, it is built and maintained through love.” as a thread title?
