^ I watched the scene...

Riley is sitting on the floor, thinking and Farkle comes in through her window. She asks him what he's gonna do about Smackle. He says that he could raise his level, but he knows that that would only make Smackle raise her level too. Then she says that she doesn't think their permanent record begins in high school. He thinks that it has to matter what grade they got in middle school. She thinks that it has to matter that who they were affects who they are. She brings up how he chose Smackle because he wants to raise his level, that that's who he is. Then he asks what she's gonna do about Spanish class. She says that she's gonna have to raise her level too...

Farkle: I knew you'd say that.
Riley: Why?
Farkle: You've always been Riley. That's your permanent record.

Then he climbs out of her window and she picks up her Spanish textbook so that she can study.

It does seem strange how Riley thought that Farkle 'chose' Smackle to 'raise his level', almost as if it was a business decision

Also the word chose is still interesting to me...
