He was the perfect person to show the show's viewers that they don't have to change who they are to fit in with people, that being unique/special is amazing and they should embrace it.

He was, he just kept on being himself, & as he got older, his friendships got stronger & he had more new friends too, while getting more comfortable with himself at the same time

I think it could have been Stuart, that was probably what he did as a kid, so he thought that was the norm
