Alan and Amy knew all about Shawn's home situation, so they made sure they were available to Shawn if/when he needed it.

^ I think so too. I'm sure Alan and Amy talked about making it official from time to time, especially during those instances where they saw how it was hurting Shawn not to have a permanent place.
