Mark couldn't really leave off to find himself, be with Lexie, or be with Addison without making it seem like his character was really never anything more than a manwhore. Likewise his relationships with Lexie and Addison seemed to have come with so much more baggage, thus making it even less realistic that he would abandon Sofia or take her away from Callie, who has always been truest best friend.

I get why Shonda considered it a possibility, the pangs were definately there that Maddison would be endgame, once she promoted ED to regular in season 3, but that pretty much changed with the introduction of PP.

I think Shonda loved MA , but she according to her they had too much baggage and that is why Addison ended up with someone who has a clean history like Jake I guess.
