That's OK, Marie. Yes, he's adopted. I have 2 birth children. And then we adopted my youngest. Of course, I have to admit, they are all my children-- it doesn't really matter to me where they came from, actually Funny, in talking about discrimination issues and ethnicity... I often "forget" that he's Korean... I know, sounds funny... but when I look at him, I just see him, I see my son. But every now and then when I look at him sleeping, it'll strike me how Korean he looks. I know it sounds kind of crazy, right?

The squinty eye comments are disgusting. For some reason when I was younger, I had sort of almond-shaped eyes and the other kids would ask me if I was Chinese and do the squinty eye thing. So stupid! I think people are just jealous and scared of anything that's different.
Most of these come from children and often children are merely curious and don't know how to go about asking about why he looks different. So far, it hasn't been too offensive. I honestly had a harder time with an adult asking me how I got a boy. But for my son, the squinty eye thing will probably be hurtful when he's old enough to understand. Kids are mean... even when, sometimes, they are not even trying to be.

What would George do? Ha ha, I love it. I'll take that to heart. You're right. Life is too short to be scared. What happened to George in the finale shows that.
Ah, words to live by-- what would George do!

Cindy, your husband is so cute with the jealousy. I laughed so hard when I read his names for him.
My boyfriend always rolls his eyes when I talk about TR.
I think I drive him and my family nuts by talking about him all the time.
Ah, yes, safety in numbers, again! Yep, my family and friends think I'm a bit nuts with it all!
What can a fangirl do?

OK thanks.

Yeah, adopted children are as much your kids as your biological ones. My mom's friend adopted a little girl, and she never thinks of her as adopted.

I hope he never lives through any discrimination. The world is hard enough as it is.

About the TR obsession, I feel you. I try so hard not to talk about him so much, but I can't help it, LOL.

My friend Ingrid is so nice. She has never watched Grey in her life and she has to endure endless conversations about TR, and she listens so patiently.

When the news broke he was officially leaving, she called me to say she had seen my TR and what a nice face he had, LOL.

WWGD should be our new motto.

I think you are right here... I think things have gotten better and will continue to do so, especially as the melting pot continues to meld even more... the divisive lines that people hold in their minds are fading. Still, as a parent, I have to prepare him (w/o overemphasizing it, of course) to potentially encounter racism and to know that the things people say about him based on his ethnicity alone are not any fault on his part, but a major fault on theirs.
That's a good attitude to have. As another example of how things have changed. One of my good friends in high school was an Indian Hindu. The clique of "mean girls" would sarcastically compliment her on her bindi, the dot on the forehead. She misunderstood and brought bindis for everyone to share. The popular kids laughed at her, mocked her religion, spoke in gibberish Hindi, and danced jeeringly in a faux-Indian manner. The "meanest girl" yelled, "This is America! You need to give up that sh**, you dumb b*tch."

With supportive students we appealed for the teachers to set aside time to address this issue of intolerance. Luckily most of the teachers she and I had were sympathetic but I later learned some in the school sided with racism. One said "It's about time you foreigners learned to be Americans."

Flash forward this year and Slumdog Millionaire wins Best Picture. In addition it earns $180 million in domestic box office and exposes Frieda Pinto a larger audience. This is a culmination of decades of multicultural movements. With all its faults the internet has helped a new generation look beyond own their borders.

As I said at a high school reunion the "mean girls" have altered their appearances resembling mine. They had silicon into their faces to produce prominent cheekbones and a prominent chin. Of course, they have collagen lips. One of many ironies were their near permanent spray tans. They once left a jar of skin whitening cream in my locker with a note saying "Don't you want to be pretty like us." Now they're darker than me. Truth be told I'm fair-skinned for a Filipino but in those days being a shade above ivory was frowned upon.

Quote:
Tying back to TR and the discrimination that he has encountered coming from IW... I do not understand how someone who claims to have been discriminated against based on a facet that he can not control could turn around and do it to someone else? Projection is probably the nastiest of all defense mechanisms. On the surface, it seems to be the least self-destructive, but in IW's case, the self-destruction was a definitive by-product.
Sadly there's a belief that justice and equality are a finite commodity therefore it should be given to the most "worthy." In the 1990s this was a fight amongst minority racial groups. Now it's between them and gays. This is the sentiment IW tapped into when he made those bogus charges of a "gay mafia" conspiracy. It doesn't surprise me he would make this argument because it's narcissistic in nature and so is he. Once he proudly proclaimed at a DC dinner Hillary Clinton and Nancy Pelosi were ignored in favor of him by the attendees.

Unfortunately this unleashed more homophobia than having hurled the epithet. It's hard for me to forgive him unless he owns up to all his mistakes. Even his fans acknowledge whenever he makes a seemingly pro-gay gesture it's for strategy to "shut those homos up." The glee to which his fans indulge in homophobia is apalling. For instance in a GA LJ community in solidarity his fans used icons incorporating the f-word. Curiously the most often used was of Adam Lambert with the first three letters changed to "F*g." What connection does Adam have to TR but their shared sexual orientation? That's just the point.

For me not only remembering the prejudices I experienced has made me sensitive to other forms of bigotry but also the realization that Asian-Americans have not advanced as much as other racial minorities in politics and popular culture. We're just one step above gays and it would be hypocritical for me to step on them in a mistaken notion of improvement.

I very much appreciate the legacy he already left in his young career. I noticed it last month when the gossip mags prominently placed pic of Adam and his date holding hands. This was big news and was in the few front pages and was even in a cover inset. The media wouldn't have been this comfortable giving him fuller coverage if it were not for TR a year before.

Quote:
When in doubt, have no fear, just think WWGD?
This went over my head at first. Duh. George is an inspiration for being so plucky. Frankly as you said, "WWTRD" is good too. Think about it he's about to headline a musical with difficult intervals with little musical theatre background. If he's willing to risk potential public embarassment than maybe I could do just the tiniest of things.

Quote:
His hair wouldn't happen to have been red in the photo, would it? I've seen photos of him leaving some place and his hair was messy and red.
Nope, it was his usual dark brunette locks but his curls frizzed. He was dressed in exercise gear and he was resting on a chair in an old-fashioned pharmacy. I speculate this may not be LA since those have been phased out decades ago. There seemed to be a lunch counter so I wondered if it was Minneapolis. Furthermore his arms were muscular.

On afterelton a reader commented TR has sex appeal in dishevelment. I agree wholeheartedly. In those set of pics at the press conference it's as if his hair in back was unraveling but yet there's something sexy.

Quote:
That's a good one. Does he ever stick to just two letters, though
My ex lamented his error in thinking the fact TR is gay would make me or other women like him or George less. Instead we're just as smitten as if it were pD, ED, or JC. He even griped, "I'm losing my girl to a gay man!" If only TR knew how much he makes our men jealous.

Quote:
I loved the background info on St. Theodore that you gave, Gwen... the way St. Theodore's story converges with TR's life and experiences during his time at Greys and the IW controversy and his response to it and the network's refusal to back him/eagerness to turn attention away from the issue at hand... wow. Powerful stuff. It would be interesting to hear how he came to have his name chosen
Here's more background on St. Theodore, specifically of Pentapolis. He's in the class of saints that are martyrs rather than those who simply performed miracles in the Middle Ages onward. In the third century he and his companions were brought before a tribunal and had his tongue cut off under orders of the Roman Emperor Gallineus. His crime was spreading Christianity in a heavily disputed region. This was the time of the Christian persecutions. It's interesting tying this to his power struggles with ABC, IW's attempt to silence him and stall his career, and his hunting by the press. Also we can add he's a pioneer in the popular culture that is still hostile to gays. Whether or not this is the source of his name it's still a startling coincidence.

Speaking of coincidence Parade is about an innocent persecuted because of his ethnciity/ religion being accused of sexual murder of a minor. Not only can we draw parallels to ABC dismissal of him, Hollywood uneasiness with his sexuality but also the sensationalism of his relationship with Mark. While a young adult he is deemed fit to consent but the tabloids likened him to Roman Polanski and R. Kelly. It was Perez who actually instigated the continued harassment of the couple.

Quote:
b-t-w-- is it just me, or does he seem happier/his expression so relaxed in recent pictures? I bet he feels like a huge weight has been lifted off, with finally having his decision to leave GA made and executed.
He definitely does. He looks like a man in control of his destiny.

Quote:
I agree 100% with that-- I know. He does have some connections too... my husband's oldest brother's wife is So. Korean (she was born here, but both of her parents were born in So. Korea) and their children have mostly Korean features. Interestingly, he is very drawn to them... they are special to him (and also his Godparents, which makes them even more special). We have tried a bit of cooking Korean dishes... a family favorite is bee-bim bop. I do think, though, that what people say will, at times, bother him, but I also know that it's unavoidable.
This is wonderful and he has more advantages than others who've not connected very well. One way I cope is to tell the difference between those who're well-meaning than those who have malicious intent.

As Cindy said these are kids and sometimes they don't understand how harmful their actions are. Also it's a reflections of the fact many aren't attuned to how homogenized the world they're presenting to their children. I worked in a program wwhere I read kids folktales and stories from different countries and American subcultures. The books were illustrated thus they could see and identify with characters of other races.

Marie, I didn't know you had almond-shaped eyes. Which side of the family do you get that from.

Lee, thanks for the pics of George. Does anyone else have the urge to stroke his lips? I always have. Maybe I should take a cold shower.

This is a moment where my Photobucket couldn't move fast enough:

Judging by his haircut, I'd say this was late '06 - early '07.

Hah, T.R. should definitely go for this look again. He pulls it off nice Another thing, his arms are just...

Also, know what's weird? We have a pharmacy around here that looks similar to that.

Gwen, I have no idea where I got those eyes from. I lost them growing up.

Yeah, thinking over it, they probably didn't mean to be hateful. They just didn't understand.

Gwen, those people you're talking about are atrocious. The sad thing is Adam Lambert and TR Knight probably have more talent in their pinky finger than them.

On another place, a poster was taunting the George fans by stating how hillarious it was that the girl George died saving was looking for a more attractive man. It seems the message Shonda send about George being beautiful inside outweighing his appearance went straight above her head. It didn't anger me. It made me laugh at her ignorance.

Then looking at those scrumptious pics Lee just posted, I again have to wonder how anyone doesn't see how hot TR is!

His arms are just drool-worthy and that white shirt just shows off his shape

It's funny about your ex. My boyfriend keeps reminding me he's gay, he wouldn't even be interested in you like somehow i will make me stop loving him, LOL.

I had never thought about it so directly, but I agree with this... the internet connects people of every ethnicity, as though they are right there together in one room.

Gwen, I honestly am heartbroken over the discrimination that you faced growing up. Honestly? High School kids are the worst of it... unlike smaller, younger children who do not have the skills to figure out how to express their curiosity about differences, high schoolers/adolescents have the ability to think abstractly to understand the complexities of these issue and the social skills to converse about ethnic differences in a reasonable and considerate manner. It just makes me that you had to endure such ignorance and pointed cruelty. I appreciate your openness in sharing you stories of discrimination, for my own understanding for my son and also to understand and appreciate TR's strength even more.

Appalling is most definitely the word. I can't believe that went on in a GA LJ community... I can't believe that was tolerated!
Appalling.

ITA. He has forged ahead, with such strength and courage... already he has done so much in terms of fading those divisive lines of intolerance-- I believe he has truly made a difference for the lesbian and gay community. I also believe that to be so openly outspoken is not his nature and that makes me all the more amazed by his courage and his insistence.

I was so intrigued by the story behind Parade, that on a recent trip to my local library, I picked up a copy of this book:
And the Dead Shall Rise: The Murder of Mary Phagan and the Lynching of Leo Frank by Steve Oney

Although mine is perhaps an earlier printing, so the cover is different. I have just barely started to read it-- I think I'm quite crazy in thinking I'll get it read... reading doesn't happen too much for me these days... during the day, if I try to read at all I'm interrupted an endless number of times and be night time (after the kids are in bed) if I sit down to read I simply can't keep my eyes open! I am going away for the weekend, leaving tomorrow... going to a family camp (my in-laws) up in Maine... sometimes with family around to help with the kids I can find an hour or two here and there to be lazy in a hammock with a book. Anyhow, I am fascinated by the story. So far the beginning has great descriptives of class division and the social climate of the time, specific to Atlanta... it has me intrigued.

Quote:
He definitely does. He looks like a man in control of his destiny.
Glad to know that it wasn't just me who noticed... that it's really detectable and not just my wishful projections, wanting TR to be happy.
"in control of his destiny"... Yes! I love the sound of that for TR-- he has worked hard and faced much adversity to celebrate this moment and to have this control.

Quote:
One way I cope is to tell the difference between those who're well-meaning than those who have malicious intent.
Thank you for this-- very simply said and very precisely pointed out... what a great way to approach it. B/c, as I have found, often people are well-meaning and they just don't know how to approach the subject... Your approach forges a very rational reaction- to step back and evaluate the intent first and foremost... and then reacting to it based on that evaluation.

Lee-- thanks so much for those pictures. I must say... I love the white T-shirt look. It is his sexiest look, IMO.

I'll leave you with this... last night I was reconnected w/ a scene in 2.25 where Derek and Addison had tried to convince the family of a pregnant woman (12 wks gestation) on life support to let her go because the medical risks to a developing fetus would be huge to keep the mother on life support for 6 mos simply for the baby, with the mother having no regulation of body temperature and hormones, etc. George spoke with the family afterwards, in his quiet and empowering way... speaking of his friend whose love is dying and needs a new heart and how their daughter would have wanted to save others by giving her organs... needless to say, I fell in love w/ George O'Malley all over again:

So, tomorrow I am off for a long, holiday w/e!

To those Americans on the thread here--
Happy Independence Day!

Did you read this? This made me think of what Gwen was saying about the critis being thrilled TR is back to theater. According to this, George's character had no growth left anymore and TR is better doing theater and his time on TV is done for now.
TV Guide Magazine | Ask Matt | Ask Matt: Can’t We Just Leave Grey’s Alone?

I couldn't disagree more, and I wrote to tell him too.

I was in such a good mood after my great Canada day last night, and this annoyed me especially since Matt always seemed to be a TR supporter.

I do love how he brings in DHP there too, another gay actor who played straight and whose critics seem to be glad are now doing theater.

I'll be reading this story about Parade. It sounds very interesting.

Yes every day, he was working on his muscles.

They even showed George flexing his muscles to Meredith and Izzie
