CATERINA'S
BACKGROUND

Canadian born actress Caterina Scorsone is perhaps best known as firebrand brain surgeon Dr. Amelia Shepherd, the rebellious kid sister of Derek "McDreamy" Shepherd on both of ABC's hit shows Private Practice and Grey's Anatomy.

While still in Canada Scorsone co-starred alongside Kirsten Dunst, Rachel Leigh Cook and Merritt Weaver in Oscar-winning Director Sarah Kernochan's coming of age film, Strike. Following increasing success in both television and film, she starred opposite Academy Award nominee Ed Harris in Agnieska Holland's The Third Miracle. She then went on to receive her first of two Gemini nominations (Canadian Emmy) for her role as Michelle Parker in the hit Canadian show Power Play.

After taking a short break to earn a degree in Comparative Literature, Scorsone was cast as lead, Jess Mastriani, on Lifetime's Missing opposite Gloria Reuben (ER). After three successful seasons in that role, she moved to Los Angeles and was cast as Callie Wilkinson in Starz network's first original program, Crash starring the late Dennis Hopper.

Scorsone earned her second Gemini nomination in the title role as 'Alice' on Syfy's acclaimed mini-series opposite Kathy Bates and Tim Curry. Shortly after that, she was then cast in Martin Campbell's thriller Edge of Darkness opposite Mel Gibson.

Scorsone joined the cast of Private Practice in 2009 as neurosurgeon Amelia Shepherd, a role for which she won a 2012 PRISM award for Best Female Performance in a Drama Series for her painfully accurate portrayal of substance abuse.

In 2013, shortly after the birth of her daughter, Scorsone switched it up to play CIA agent Celia Winchester in Roger Donaldson's newest action thriller The November Man starring Pierce Brosnan and Olga Kurylenko.

To the great excitement of fans the medical drama, Caterina signed on to reprise the role of the favorite hellion surgeon, Dr. Amelia Shepherd on Grey's Anatomy in 2014. She currently resides in Los Angeles.
AMELIA'S
BACKGROUND

Dr. Amelia Shepherd is the youngest sister of Dr. Derek Shepherd, and like her brother, she is also an excellent neurosurgeon whose ambition in proving herself equal to her brother is only surpassed by her surgical skill. Graduating in the top of her class at Harvard, Dr. Shepherd completed her surgical residency at Johns Hopkins. She has experienced many struggles over the years, including a difficult battle with substance abuse and the loss of a child, who was born with a fatal neurological anomaly. Most recently, Amelia decided to relocate to Seattle and join the staff at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital.

Added. :)

I hope they give Amelia a good storyline. I feel like there's so much more to explore with her character.

Add me! So glad she's regular now - the official news yesterday was great. :) Yay for her having her own thread.

eta: I'm curious if she had a thread on the old (and closed) PP board.

Both added!

Hm, I've never looked at the old PP board - I'll definitely go look over there now, though.

The response seems mostly positive about Caterina joining the cast. The only people who aren't okay with it are the ones who think "she's taking Cristina's place." Well, Cristina can't be replaced, but I like I've said many times, Amelia can fill that void. I hope we see more of Amelia's "unfiltered" side. People are also worried about a relapse.

I see Seattle as a fresh start for Amelia. I'd like to see her battling her addiction, but not necessarily relapsing. I think the temptation relapse is always there for an addict, especially when the opportunity is there (she works in a hospital surrounded by pills). Moreso, I'm interested to see how she deals with being in Derek's shadow - it's inevitable - and also developing a friendship with Meredith. I also want to see her interact with other characters, though.

I do feel like they've mainly brought her in for Meredith, since she had all her scenes with her in 10x23 and a scene in 10x24.

Maybe just me but I dont see her as cristina's replacement

darkxtwisty 06-24-2014 12:58 PM

I don't either. She just happens to have a lot of Cristina's characteristics and can fill a void that'll need to be filled in Cristina's absence. IDK, I've always liked Amelia more than Cristina. Both have a dry sense of humor, though. They're both pros at sarcasm and crazy metaphors.

Yay! TFTNT!

QueenMeredith 06-24-2014 02:12 PM

I think people are saying ''she's Cristina's replacement'' cause she might be Mer's new female friend.. and probably Owen's love interest.

But anyways Cristina/Sandra left and the show must go on.

darkxtwisty 06-24-2014 03:29 PM

Exactly. Sandra chose to leave and Caterina has wanted to come back to Grey's since PP ended. I'm glad it worked out.

Updated the banner in the op.

Looks nice.

I've always loved Amelia. Her and Charlotte were my favorite PP characters, but I'm not quite sure if I should be happy about her coming to Grey's.. On the one hand we're gonna see more of her and that's pretty awesome, but on the other hand she had already gotten her happy ending there with James, and now they made them break up. :( Do you think she will date Owen? I would rather for her to find herself (personally and professionally) and explore her relationship with Derek and Meredith, rather than for them to make her date /hook up with someone. Also as in right now, I can't imagine her and Owen together, but my opinion might change.

darkxtwisty 06-25-2014 06:26 AM

I can see why James and Amelia weren't quite right for each other. Caterina mentioned in an interview that James essentially had the perfect upbringing and the perfect life. Amelia had a good upbringing too, but her dad died when she was five and she took a difficult path. She's damaged, and she felt like she wasn't really good enough for James. I also don't think she was in love with him.

I can see Owen and Amelia together mainly because of the hints dropped last season. Amelia said she wants a family, and she's totally crazy about Zola and Bailey. I just think she doubts herself. If I were writing the show, I would have the first half of the season be Amelia and Meredith finding themselves. I would have Meredith and Amelia bond a lot because they're really in similar places right now. Amelia feels like she's in Derek's shadow, and Meredith is trying to avoid his shadow too. They also have numerous similar life experiences. I mean, Derek held them both dead. Mer and Amelia have a lot to bond over.

Then in the second half of the season, I might have Amelia and Owen start to bond and possibly start something, because I do think they'd make a good match, given their pasts and what they both want in a relationship. (I might also have them have a few scenes in the first half of the season, so there's a build up).
