Patrick Dempsey joins 'Valentine's Day'
To play a doctor in the ensemble romantic comedy

Dempsey has joined the cast of New Line's romantic comedy "Valentine's Day," being directed by Garry Marshall.

The ensemble already includes Julia Roberts, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Alba, Jessica Biel, Jennifer Garner, Shirley MacLaine, Bradley Cooper, Ashton Kutcher, Topher Grace, Emma Roberts and Hector Elizondo.

"Valentine's," which begins shooting this week, follows five slightly interconnecting stories playing out in Los Angeles during Valentine's Day.

Dempsey will play a married obstetrician dating Garner's character on the sly, with her unaware of his status.

Mike Karz is producing with Wayne Rice. Sam Brown and Michael Disco are overseeing for the studio. Katherine Fugate wrote the initial draft; Abby Kohn and Marc Silverstein penned the most recent version.

Dempsey, one of the stars of ABC's "Grey's Anatomy," most recently appeared on the big screen in the 2008 romantic comedy "Made of Honor." He is repped by UTA and the Burstein Co.

The two join Julia Roberts, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Alba, Jessica Biel, Jennifer Garner, Shirley MacLaine, Bradley Cooper, Ashton Kutcher, Topher Grace, Emma Roberts and Hector Elizondo in the Intertwining film about couples and singles in Los Angeles who break-up and make-up based on the pressures and expectations of Valentine’s Day.

Roberts is playing an army officer on leave from Iraq on a flight to L.A. Cooper, on the same flight, is a gay man whose lover is a closeted football player. Kutcher is an owner of a flower shop who proposes to his girlfriend (Alba), only to realize he is in love with his close friend, played by Garner, who discovers her boyfriend is married.

MacLaine will play Roberts’ mother, a happy retiree who reveals to her husband a long-ago affair. Hathaway is an assistant working at the biggest talent agency in town and dating a mailroom assistant; Biel is a publicist unlucky in love who has no date on Valentine’s Day.

Dempsey will play a married obstetrician dating Garner’s character on the sly, with her unaware of his status. Dane will play a quarterback struggling over the decision of whether to retire.

Filming begins this week.

Hmm... I'm happy he's doing another movie. But not another romantic comedy!

He can do better than that!

Oh well... *sigh*

Paddy and Julia Roberts in the same movie is like my dream

But they probably won't share any scenes

Well I for one like Romantic comedy

He himself stated he is not into actions and violent movies and honestly for any movie where he is there I'm there

Well... I hate romcoms. They're boring

I've never liked those kind of movies.
But he's just playing a small part, it's not like he's carrying the movie like MoH. So I guess it's okay.

He didn't say that, he just said he doesn't want to carry around a gun and start killing people in movies.
A few months ago he said he had a few projects going. An action movie, a thriller and another one...
And he said he'd like to step away form the romcom genre and do something else.

And in an interview about 2 months ago, he said he was doing 2 movies this fall. I guess it's true after all

So if he's doing a second movie this year, I hope it's something totally different !

And I know he'll be doing "The art of racing in the rain" next year or in 2 years. I'm already looking forward to that!

I can't wait, I like RomComs , actually I think I like all kinds of movies lol
Very excited to see this movie, I have been waiting for more info on it since I read about Katherine Heigel pulling out of it ( rumor was that she wanted more money but I don't know how true that was)
I hope PD gets to have screen time with more than just JG ( love her though) but would love to see him in scenes with Julia Roberts or Anne Hathaway and the Mark/Derek bromance lover in me would love to see them share scenes as different characters in this movie

I wonder what the other film he is doing is about? I haven't seen anything about another one yet..Anyone else?

Question Eve, I know the Art of Racing in the rain is about racing but is it a drama, comedy, action or something else? very curious as to what genre it falls in

Well it's not really about racing...
The book is actually the story of a family. Denny, his wife Eve (

) and their daughter Zoë. It's told from the perspective of their dog, Enzo.

And to answer your question, it's a drama. Definitely a drama.
You should read the book, it's really good! And you'll probably cry

Oh and Don Kitch is mentioned in it

OMG they mention Don?? That sounds cool, hmm from the dog's perspective.. I think I might pick up that book, sounds interesting,I thought it was about racing lol

We'll see how it goes... Eric Dane is going to be part of the cast too so a Paddy and an Eric in the same film... I can't miss it

Same here... He's done nothing but romcom since Grey's. I gotta say, I liked his pre-Grey's movies much better. Now he's always playing the same role.
We all know he can do better than that.

But then again, he's just trying to keep being in the public eye. So it's actually good that he's doing another movie, even though it's another romcom. But it's not like he's the lead in this movie, it's an ensemble cast so not all the attention will be on him.

I loved the book. The role of Denny is perfect for him. I kept picturing him when I was reading it.

He starts shooting "Valentine's Day" next week as well as Grey's.
