We discussed it already. Months before his departure it was reported that he will not be coming back next season (at least fully) because of him being diva on set. He also revealed that he didn't want to be killed off.
He had a conflict with Shonda.

Months before he left it was known he won't be coming back in S12 full time. Right after his departure he said that he thought it was a bad idea to kill him off.
And this new interview you are talking about he AGAIN confirmed he had no idea/involvement in all of this:
"I knew he was going to be gone, but I didn't know how she was going to handle it. Shonda just said, I'm going to do it in a really good way and she did her thing."
He had no involvement in it, despite being main actor for 10 years. Strange, huh?
