It just doesn't sit right with me.

If she had said "Derek - the father of my children." that might be a bit better, "or my dead husband, you know... the father of my children."

I feel like Shonda is removing the connection between Meredith and Derek. I do think Derek would be honored to have fathered two children with Meredith, but it just doesn't sit right with me.

There is absolutely zero negative intention meant by it in any way. What she said is actually lovely.

ETA: What is an amazing connection Meredith and Derek have together? The fact they have three children together!

They did tons of bad in his last episode and how they did the aftermath but, that line from next episode, for me there's absolutely nothing wrong with it. But like I said it's a beautiful term to refer to him.

ITA. That is the greatest connection they will always have together. They made 2 beautiful children and chose another one to be their daughter.

It's clear it's an endearment- she's smiling and remembering how when he screwed the intern (since that's what they're discussing), he became the father of her children.

Any goofball character can call him Derek (and Bailey did). Only one person can refer to him as something as special as that.

It was only half a second, I barely got to look at Meredith let alone hear it. I will hold on any further comments until I see the episode Thursday.

But I am glad Derek was in some way mentioned. They were mentioning characters that have been long gone in the past few episodes and Derek only left the show six months ago.

I love all Mer talking about him, but damn she made me cry like a baby, her speech, talking from her own cruel experience.. and now she was starting to get past what happened, she's face to face with someone who was part of the worst day of her life.
