Our options:
1. Phone was stolen.
2. She actually called his work phone (not his cell phone). If she has both phones under the same contact, it would be easy to do. The person who answers could be someone 'new' in the office, because honestly they sounded like they had no clue who Derek Shepherd even was.
3. Going with the work phone theory, maybe Derek quit and the woman who answered is his replacement and never knew Derek.
4. It's his assistant/intern who has a crush on him and wants his marriage to fail, so she plays dumb (and he has no feelings toward her). Similar to the April situation, except April wasn't devious enough to actually attempt to steal Derek.

It could be a wide range of situations, and I'll keep coming up with situations. Anything but the obvious. I think if it were the /obvious/ it wouldn't have been in a promo. It reminds me of the MerDer moving to DC storyline last year. A huge whammy and put a big curveball in their storyline, but it was obvious Meredith was going to change her mind by the end of the next episode. I think by the end of the next episode we'll definitely know what's really going on with Derek, but Meredith won't know until episode 17.

At least we have a storyline, even if it's a lazy dramatic cheating storyline. XD It's only lazy writing if they don't connect it to their underlying trust issues, though. Trust is the overarching theme here, I think, and I hope that's what the writers are getting at. I hope they're not actually going to have yet another cheating storyline, because at this stage in the game there's no realistic reason for Derek to cheat other than drifting apart/being on separate coasts. Otherwise MerDer have appeared seemingly healthy. In their last on-screen conversation, they both wanted to make it work.

The only reason they could justify Derek cheating is he was lonely, but Derek isn't that kind of guy. He even took Addison back after he walked in on her screwing his best friend. And it took that for him to leave Addison like he did. We know he was absent before Addison started cheating on him, but as far as we know, he never cheated on Addison before (as far as we know, of course). Makes me wonder if Addison accused him of having an affair at some point and that's what led to her deciding to cheat on him. It's easy to assume things like that especially when distance is involved.

Derek didn't cheat on Addison because he was lonely. He slept with Meredith because he was broken, and she repaired what Addison broke, and he ended up falling in love with her. A cheating situation here couldn't even compare. Yes, I can see how Meredith can think it's his "M.O." that once a cheater, always a cheater. They often say men who cheat on their first wife and leave them for the person they're cheating with often cheat on that person too. However, I don't think it's like that with Derek.

I've been wanting them to compare to this to Addek, so here we are. Now we just need to show how they're /different/. It would be silly to have history actually repeat itself and boring. And they'd lose pretty much the entire MerDer fandom, because we wouldn't recover from that, and neither would they.

I don't think this person knows who Meredith is and was maybe unsure or smt and just ended the call instead lol. I mean, I do that most of the time w the amount of spam calls I get. I do however think that there's a possibility that it could be someone who has a crush on him. Another 'Month' in DC.
And if that's the case, I want a repeat of 6.20!
Meredith double checked the number so it's definitely Derek's phone number. I can't imagine him having an affair tbh, it's a lil far fetched.

The woman didn't seem to know what the skills lab was, either, so didn't sound like she knows Derek either. which is why I thought stolen.

If it were a ONS, I think it's weird that she would answer the phone in the first place. /I/ would not answer my one night stand's phone. If it were an actual relationship with another woman /shudder/ I think she would know about the skills lab, no? And if she simply didn't know who Mer was, why answer the phone in the first place? Also, if you're "the other woman" who didn't know your guy was married, wouldn't you want to know who the woman on the phone is? Maybe it's just me, but if I were sleeping with a man and another woman called him and I happened to answer, I would ask who it is.

Whoever was on the phone either wants to cause drama between MerDer or doesn't even know who Derek is, IMO.

I agree that Derek will be hurt/disappointed if she accuses him. With their current situation I really don't know how Derek will react to that. Calm her fears and tell her he would never do that or being too angry about her doubting him and not trying to calm anything.
They can do great things with this storyline but I hate all the negative buzz it creates. We just had that with Mer. Why again?

He will definitely be upset that she doesn't trust him. I'm sure she'll actually accuse him or ask. I think it's "the music" they face in 11x17. The striking reality that their problems are far deeper than either realized until now.

I don't think he is cheating, but some of the comments I've read online really make me sick to my stomach. People thinking the only way viewers can let go of and hate Derek is if he cheats, so Shonda is setting up Derek's exit so Patrick can be off the show.

Can. We. Not. I just can't see Ellen or Patrick being okay with that storyline, unless Patrick is suddenly so desperate to get off the show, he doesn't care, but I don't think he's that type of person.

What's weird is literally NO scoops. Last season the media was all over the casts with scoops. Even the interviews that have been given by Ellen and I think Sarah Drew did one had NO info of what's to come. We're in the dark 110%, which is frightening. It's like the days before the internet when we had no idea what was going to happen except the promo the week before and the short synopsis provided by TV Guide... all we know is Derek appears in next episode (Patrick was on set) and he's in Seattle by 11x18 (BTS pic).

They keep hinting a cheating story line, which we all know won't happen.

I hope we would finally get MerDer next episode. I'm tired of watching other people flirt and kiss. In fact I mostly skip on those part.

Hmmm.. I do wonder if she's going to ask him point blank if he cheated... and what's the reason he's going to return..

No matter how much you trust your spouse, calling him, a woman answers, refused to tell who she is and than hang up.. of course you will be thinking the worst.. especially when you've been living on two different coasts, adding that to the history = Boom. I don't fault Mer for thinking about this.

They've been very careful MerDer/Patrick related. With press release/pics/no tweets/no BTS.. so no scoops for sure.

Like I said yesterday, all the hints on Meredith and that was in Neuro, I wonder if it's going to come up.. they ''fix that'' for their marriage but never really dealt with it.. more trust issues I bet will come out with this.

It really brings things in a full circle, when you think about it. Assuming he didn't cheat, it will be great for showing how different Meredith and Derek's relationship is from Addison and Derek's...

If he cheated, then that's a whole other story I don't even want to imagine and I won't until the fat lady sings.

11x17 PR says "Meredith and Derek face the music." Not "Derek faces the music" or "Meredith faces the music." Meaning they're in this together, and trust issues are huge a issue they've struggled with together. The music is the long distance isn't working, and they need to figure something else out.

It is a FULL CIRCLE. This screams Shonda. I guess that's why they've been all hush hush on the MD front, don't want to spoil anything.. everyone knew what's gonna happen to Japril/Calzona this season. Yesterday's ending was a surprising cliff, no one predict that.

Yes, not one of them BUT TOGETHER. I am happy they have a storyline, I just hope that the writers deal with this in the right way, and give it the focus it deserves.

Wouldn't surprise me if it's something Shonda's wanted to do all along... she loves mirroring stories. Look at Ellis/Richard. Now Addek/MerDer. I don't see it having the same outcome, I truly don't. If it does, then there goes the whole MerDer fandom. None of us would watch anymore...
