In a production that seems tailor-made to tap into the current discussion on gender roles and male-female power imbalances, one of contemporary American drama's fiercest portrayals of toxic masculinity will be given a bold new spin.

Steppenwolf Theatre Company veteran Amy Morton will make her Broadway directing debut on a revival of David Mamet's Pulitzer Prize- and Tony-winning play Glengarry Glen Ross, with an all-female ensemble. The 1983 drama depicts the cutthroat fight for supremacy and survival of a group of aggressively competitive salesmen in a Chicago real estate office, struggling to offload mostly worthless properties.

The play features a handful of juicy roles, notably Ricky Roma, the hotshot broker who sees his sales figures as evidence of his macho vitality; and Shelley "The Machine" Levine, a once-formidable veteran salesman who hasn't closed a deal in a long time and now finds his livelihood in jeopardy.

Mamet's ricochet dialogue and volatile confrontations in this play in particular have long been catnip to top stage actors, with performers in various productions including Al Pacino, Liev Schreiber, Joe Mantegna, Robert Prosky, Alan Alda, Frederick Weller and Bobby Cannavale.

James Foley's 1992 film adaptation starred Pacino, Jack Lemmon, Alec Baldwin, Kevin Spacey, Ed Harris, Alan Arkin, Jonathan Pryce and Jude Ciccolella.

No casting has been announced for the all-female Broadway production, which follows previous revivals in 2005 and 2013 and is scheduled to open in May 2019, after the cutoff point for next year's Tony Awards. Mamet's longtime Broadway producer Jeffrey Richards heads the project, along with Will Trice, Rebecca Gold and Steve Traxler.

Actress-turned-director Morton received Tony nominations for her performances in 2008 in August: Osage County and in 2013 for Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, both of which were Steppenwolf transfers. She directed the acclaimed off-Broadway premiere of Rajiv Joseph's Guards at the Taj in 2015. Her extensive Steppenwolf directing credits include Mamet's American Buffalo and Glengarry Glen Ross, Bruce Norris' Clybourne Park, Martin McDonagh's The Pillowman and Suzan-Lori Parks' Topdog/Underdog. Morton also is a series regular on NBC's Chicago P.D.

Exact dates, cast, design team and Broadway theater for Glengarry Glen Ross are to be announced. Mamet recently revealed he is writing a play about the downfall of Harvey Weinstein, although no further details have been forthcoming.
