“But it’s something he has to keep from Natalie,” Frolov continued. “That eats at the relationship. [However] we will continue to go towards a wedding.”

My guess:

Maybe his past with Emilly is only in friendship, he may have been an important person to her at a difficult time (as we are already suspicious in this first episode) and they will reconnect now and maybe that is why we will know that part of the past and it's in the meantime that he and Brett will get to know each other and maybe start a romantic relationship.

It’s so funny. We were just talking about that in the writer’s room. It came up because we haven’t done a real Molly’s story in a while, like Molly’s either being in jeopardy from competition, or we had a time when the city was going to tear down the building Molly’s was in. We were just thinking about, “Oh, do we need a new Molly’s story?” And then it came up, “Who owns Molly’s? It’s Gabby, it’s Otis and it’s Herrmann, and then you’ve got Stella Kidd, who’s working there.” So, yes, I think we’re going to bring it up but not early on in this season.

Remember before Molly’s was a success, Herrmann went through one bad business venture after another.

Yes, he did. Those instincts for Herrmann never quite die. He’s always looking for the next get-rich-quick scheme. He kind of did it with the Slamigan again in this last season. It was Joe Cruz (Joe Minoso) and Brett’s invention, and he wanted to jump on that, so we’ll see a little bit more of that this year.

Boden lost his promotion to Carl Grissom (Gary Cole), who was sneaky, so he’s returned to Firehouse 51. There have to be repercussions from that, especially since the trailer for the new seasons shows this guy named Jerry snooping around the firehouse.

Yeah, so Jerry Gorsch is our newest pot stirrer in Firehouse 51. He is played by Steven Boyer, who’s a really phenomenal actor. Basically, he’s Grissom’s lackey, his right hand, that he sends to Firehouse 51 to keep a closer eye on the house and to really be a thorn in Boden’s side, based on the repercussions of Boden trying to stop Grissom’s ascendency in the cradle. He’s an assistant deputy commissioner who will be working out of the firehouse.

And since Severide sided with Boden will that have repercussions for him, too?

Yes, it will. You’ll see that in the first episode. Grissom is not of the mentality of letting bygones be bygones. He holds grudges.

So, Severide is also with Stella. Smooth sailing or rocky road?

Smooth sailing for now and then because this show is called Chicago Fire, it’s never quite an easy road. I think the fans of Stella and Severide are going to be happy, at least for the first half of the season.

Is Severide half-sister Katie going to be hanging around?

I really want her to come back at least for an episode, but the only question is she’s a regular on The Magician, so it becomes a scheduling thing where our first ADs have to talk to their first ADs and figure out can we get her and how long can we get her for. So, she’s not going to be in multiple episodes but I’m definitely trying to get her back for one. I love bringing characters back who were in the show before.

What about Brett’s romantic life? Are she and Antonio going to work, or is she going to find somebody else?

There’s going to be a new man coming into the firehouse. I don’t want to give anything away because it has to do with the plot, too, but there’s a new man coming into the firehouse that might be the right fit for Brett.

Interesting, because she and Antonio (Jon Seda) seem so good together, but they always have things that get in the way.

I’m not going to throw water on that completely because I think I might be the biggest fan of Brett and Antonio. It just becomes very hard from a physical production standpoint because he’s starring on Chicago PD, and she’s starring on this show even more so this year, so the real-life scheduling problems of trying to keep a multi-cross show relationship are tough. We can do it when it’s our side characters, like a Platt (Amy Morton) and a Mouch (Christian Stolte), but we tried to do it before with Severide and Lindsey (Sophia Bush) on Chicago PD, and it’s really hard. We’ve tried to do it with Antonio and Brett a few times. It’s hard.

Chicago One is a big change for you, with both a new day and a new time. Any concerns about that, or do you think it’s a good thing to put all the shows together like ABC did with Shondaland on Thursday nights?

I’m not being political here. I am so happy. I love it. We were on Thursday night at 10 last year for the first time, and it was a tougher slot, in terms of our lead-ins. Our lead-ins were comedies, not dramas, so you’re asking an audience to flip a switch and then be into a different show.

The fact that we’re going to have Med again as our lead-in — it’s been a couple of years since we had that — is very exciting for me, and from a storytelling standpoint, I think these three shows go so well together.

Obviously, they’re in the same family but we do many crossovers, especially on Chicago Fire. I think even more than Med and PD, we are constantly at the hospital or interacting with the police, so it’s just going to be, I think, one-stop shopping in a lot of ways for people.

I talked to Diane Frolov and she said that on the second episode of the season, they’re going to flipflop and Fire will be at eight and Med will be at nine because the story starts on Chicago Fire, so it seems that they can move things around to accommodate story.

I hope that’s not too confusing, but we’re selling the second week as our gigantic event, which is honestly the biggest episode we’ve ever done on Chicago Fire, and it’s a three-way crossover. It just naturally works that if you have a giant fire, or incident, or accident, the next step is to go to the hospital and help the people, and then the next step is to find out who did it, and that’s why we put them in that order, but just for that week.

What will the big event be?

It’s a giant fire inside a residence tower, so it’s our first time really to do a big downtown tower fire. Multiple units involved. You’re going to have tons of firefighters, a huge presence, and then I will say, here’s my teaser, we did a stunt with Severide dangling outside the building that is not green screen. People are going to be watching it going, “How did they do this?” We did it, and I was so proud of our stunt crew and Taylor, honestly, for doing it because my knees start knocking if I get above the 20th floor and here he is dangling off the side of this building. It’s really impressive. Mission: Impossible style.
