In these last episodes of the season, we’ve been watching the conjoined twins surgery progress, and in the episode that airs next Tuesday, Connor is really thrown for a loop. And when the season finale ends [on May 15], you’re going to be wondering where Connor stands, and what his fate is at Chicago Med.

Chicago Fire interview: Derek Haas on season 6 finale, Dawsey, Boden, Cruz, and more

The Chicago Fire season 6 finale is coming up on Thursday night and with it being a two-hour event, there could be a number of big reveals. Casey and Dawson, for example, are nearing a big decision on their future; meanwhile, Boden could be making an important choice when it comes to his career. It’s certainly possible that there could be a cliffhanger in the closing seconds of this episode — after all, this is Chicago Fire! It’s hard not to expect something like this to go down.

In the second part of our two-part interview with showrunner Derek Haas, he explains the process of plotting out the finale, what could be coming next for Boden, and also how much planning he is doing at present for the seventh season of the show.

CarterMatt – Are we going to see both Grissom and Boden jockeying for the position of commissioner within these episodes?

Derek Haas – Yes. There are three big stories that we’re going to have going on in these two episodes. There’s the idea that Boden and Grissom are going to battle for the commissioner-ship, amongst other candidates. It’s going to get heated for the two of them.

The second main storyline we’re going to do is Renee coming back, and she needs an expert witness to help her case that she’s bringing against a refinery where some firefighters got hurt. She appeals to Severide’s love for the fire department to help her out. As we get more into that storyline we get more into what we liked about Renee before the craziness of her last couple of episodes. Before that, she was a really good romantic lead for Severide. Now, she’s got a five-year old kid. I’ve used this before, but we do a little bit of a Jerry Maguire where Severide sees how good of a mother she is to this kid and also competent at her job. This is going to come at an inopportune time for Stella Kidd.

Storyline #3, which got teased recently, was Dawson saying that she wants to try and get pregnant again. The ups and downs of trying for another baby are going to dominate the last couple of episodes.

When you come up with finales, is it consciously on your mind to try and do something different than the year before?

I would say 100% we look at what we’ve done before and not just in spring finale, but also those winter/fall finales. The last two finales, if you look at them back-to-back, we had Casey and Severide jumping off of a burning building in the winter finale. Then, before that we had everyone trapped in a building and Mouch had a heart attack while Casey was calling on the radio to say goodbye to his wife.

We decided that we wouldn’t go the spectacle route because we’ve already done it twice in a row, but we are going for some emotional wallops. They’re going to come really fast and furious in the last two acts of the two-hour event. There’s going to be some devastating haymakers thrown at the audience.

As the self-proclaimed head of the Joe Cruz fan club, I always root for him even though he’s been in some messy stuff lately. There’s been a lot going on with him and Brett and if those feelings are still there. Is that explored a lot in these last episodes?

Yes. Cruz’s dalliance with this high school flame rears its head into these episodes. Brett’s sitting there and she had this great, hot-and-heavy romance with Antonio. I don’t know that this is going away but she is looking at Cruz in a new light. He’s a rock. I’m in the fan club — I’m the second fan behind you in the Cruz fan club. He’s a great guy and a great character.

Are you already thinking about ideas and themes in the event the show comes back?

Fingers crossed it comes back. I’m always thinking where these stories are going. I’m not ending this season in such a way where anyone is going to be satisfied. We have thoughts about what next season is going to be. One of the things that I challenged the writers room with before they left for their hiatus is to be thinking about some of those ideas — when you look back at a season, what do you think about? Do you think about those huge episodes or the storyline turns that we tend to do? There are probably going to be new characters next year, so let’s think about some new characters we can add.

Derek Haas on Chicago Fire season finale: ‘Emotional haymakers’

Chicago Fire’s season finale has ’emotional haymakers’ ahead according to co-creator Derek Haas, who teased what’s at the end of Chicago Fire season 6.

Tomorrow’s Chicago Fire season finale is so big, it needed an extra hour—and co-creator Derek Haas told us those two episodes are going to hit you square in the heart.

After a season that involved two cliffhangers putting someone in physical jeopardy, Derek told One Chicago Center that for the final act of Chicago Fire season 6, he decided to go for the more emotional conclusion.

“With Chicago Fire, we don’t have just one big finale,” he explained. “We have three, because we had the winter finale and then we had an Olympics finale. So it wasn’t only how do you do what you did last year, but how do you do more this year?

“Last year was this big spectacle of this warehouse on fire and Mouch had a heart attack, and we thought Casey was going to die, and we just felt like we couldn’t do that again,” he continued.

“This year, we had Casey and Severide on top of a building launching off into space while a fireball would chase them—again a spectacle kind of cliffhanger.

“[For the season finale], we decided we’d go with some emotional haymakers.”

There are several characters who have a lot emotionally invested in Thursday’s back-to-back episodes. One is Chief Wallace Boden (Eamonn Walker), who is looking toward a bigger future. He’s now locked into a battle with Chief Grissom (returning guest star Gary Cole) for the soon-to-be-vacant role of fire commissioner, and it’s serious.

“Boden’s going to be looking at that,” Derek teased, “and Chief Grissom we haven’t seen the last of. He’s back with a vengeance.”

Grissom’s former friend Kelly Severide (Taylor Kinney) has his own personal issue to deal with, because his ex-girlfriend Renee Royce (Sarah Shahi) is also present for both hours of the season finale. What was it like for Derek to revisit a character and a relationship that we hadn’t heard of since season 2?

“[Sarah] was a great romantic love interest in season 1 for Severide,” Derek reflected. “And then when we realized we couldn’t keep her in season 2 because she had gotten a lead role on another show, we came up with this ending to her character that I wasn’t all that satisfied with.

“I thought if we could get her back and maybe redeem her a bit in the audience’s eyes,” he continued, “and yet play up to the audience’s expectations, because I can guarantee you when people think of her, they remember the end more than they remember the rest. And we can’t hide from that.

“She’s going to come at an inopportune time for Severide and Kidd, and reinsert herself in Severide’s life, and Kidd’s going to be wary of her motives.”

The Chicago Fire season 6 conclusion will also have a more light-hearted storyline for Joe Cruz (Joe Minoso), who needs one after his dalliance with infidelity.

“The other storyline to watch out for is Brett and Cruz and the Slamigan,” Derek revealed. “We haven’t seen the end of the Slamigan. New things are going to be happening in that world. Brett helped manufacture the Slamigan so she’s tied into it, and someone new is going to come look at the tool.”

With things like possible promotions, new-old relationships and even a possible Dawsey baby on the horizon, that presents an interesting conundrum for Derek Haas and the rest of the writers on Chicago Fire. How do they allow their characters to move forward with their lives, while also being able to keep the show going?“There’s going to be some more answers and maybe some new questions arising,” Derek teased. “Where we have fun challenging ourselves, is how do we do thing that you think will be hard from a production standpoint or hard from a character development standpoint.

“But when you make those choices rather than pull back from them, sometimes they can be rewarding. It will give you more creativity in the writers room,” he concluded. “You’ve got to keep these characters progressing.”

Brace Yourselves, Chicago Fire Boss Derek Haas Teases an Emotional Finale

With Boden (Eamonn Walker) gunning for a promotion that could potentially take him out of Firehouse 51 and Renée returning to stir up some trouble with Stella (Miranda Rae Mayo) and Severide (Taylor Kinney), things are coming to a head on Chicago Fire.

Thursday's two-hour finale will see Boden make an important step towards becoming the fire department's next commissioner. Will our brave firefighters lose their fearless boss at the end of the season? Meanwhile, Kidd will grow suspicious of Renée (Sarah Shahi) who insists she only needs Severide's help with a case. Given what we already know about the dubious lawyer, Kidd has every right to question Renée's motives.

With Fire poised to wrap up Season 6 in truly dramatic fashion, TV Guide hit up showrunner Derek Haas to get the scoop on the emotional finale including Boden's potential new gig, roadblocks Dawson (Monica Raymund) and Casey (Jesse Spencer) may face as they try for another baby, and what Renée's return means for Stellaride.

You described the Season 6 finale as jubilant. Can you elaborate on that?
Derek Haas:
It's more jubilant for me because I know the audience is gonna be squirming at the end.

It looks like Brett and Dawson are going to face a dangerous call. Given what we've seen with previous finales like that gnarly warehouse fire at the end of Season 5, how fearful should we be for their lives?
Haas:
I didn't want to try to do the same thing we did last year where we have multiple characters in danger of losing their lives in the last two minutes of the show. We've done that a couple of times over the first five seasons. Yes, Brett and Dawson are gonna go into a call that's gonna be a little more harrowing than our usual calls but that's not gonna be the big ending. Our big endings are gonna be more of the emotional and WTF variety than the big spectacle.

So you're just gonna mess with our emotions.
Haas:
(laughing) Yeah, exactly. That's why I'm jubilant.

Speaking of emotional topics, Dawson and Casey have decided to try for another baby. Knowing what happened with Dawson's miscarriage and then their failure to adopt Louie, how do you think this time will be different for them?
Haas:
It's gonna be a fun few episodes for them as they are trying to have a baby. And Dawson's gonna want to get everything checked out to make sure that she can do it and he can do it, and that'll lead to some twists and turns.

It took a while for Stella and Severide to get back together and now that they are, what other roadblocks will they face?
Haas:
We wouldn't be Chicago Fire if we didn't throw one last giant right hook at this relationship because Sarah Shahi is coming back. [She] left our show under dubious motives and circumstances. At an inopportune time in the Kidd/Severide relationship, Renée's gonna [return to] the firehouse needing Kelly's help. Stella is going to question her motives right off the get-go.

Dawson told Kidd that Renée and Kelly have long since been done but are there lingering feelings from either party?
Haas:
Whenever we bring up Renée, [everyone] remembers the ending but they forget that we had seven or eight episodes where she was a nice romantic and intellectual match for Severide. I'd like to redeem that a little bit. Dawson was correct in that when Renée left, Severide put [that relationship] behind him. However, seeing her again, there's that moment you have of... [citing the film Sliding Doors in which the audience simultaneously sees the two different directions Gwyneth Paltrow's character's life takes] I think Severide has a little bit of Sliding Doors where it's like "Oh, I wonder what my life would have been like five years later" after Renée arrives. [He wonders what] if things had worked out differently.

Can you say this will offer some closure between the two of them?
Haas:
At least an understanding, better than what we did before. Between Season 1 and Season 2, [Shahi] got cast as a regular on another show so we had to write her off the show in a way that I'm not that crazy about. I didn't think we did it justice based on what we've set up.

This sounds like your second shot at writing a great sendoff for Renée.
Haas:
But at the same time, I do know what the audience's expectations are gonna be and what their memory of her was so I don't shy away from that. I think the audience is gonna be questioning her the same way Stella is.

Chief Boden is in the running to become the Chicago Fire Department's next commissioner. How would his potential promotion affect the firehouse?
Haas:
Casey says it: "Boden's the greatest thing to happen to us, but that shouldn't stand in the way of what he could do potentially for the entire CFD. And our selfish want to have him here should pale in comparison to the good that a man like Boden could do as the next commissioner." What they don't want is either a conniving politician-type like what they're afraid Chief Grissom is gonna be. Or a desk job pencil pusher accountant-type who's just gonna cut the budgets. They know that Boden would have the best interest of firefighters and the city of Chicago first so that's why they want to back him.

He sounds like the perfect candidate, so should audiences be prepared for Chicago Fire to lose its fearless leader to a higher position?
Haas:
I don't think that takes him out of the show if that were to happen. There's a whole side of CFD that we haven't seen very much. But [Boden's potential promotion] could bring in new stories and new ideas. The show is called Chicago Fire and I feel like there are all sorts of storylines we could get if we go in that direction. But again, you'll have to wait and see what happens. And I'm not going to tell you that all things will be answered at the end of the finale.

Is Chicago Fire Staging a Major Shake-Up for Season 7?

After much delay, NBC finally dropped the news we've been waiting for all season: Chicago Fire has been renewed for Season 7! That's right, the firefighters of Firehouse 51 will be back for more heart-stopping drama next season. But don't break out the celebratory champagne just yet.

According to Deadline, there's a chance not everyone will be returning for Season 7. The trade reports that while Jesse Spencer and Taylor Kinney inked one-year deals to secure their spots for the new season, Eamonn Walker, Monica Raymund and David Eigenberg have not. In other words, there's a slight possibility that we could lose Boden, Dawson and Hermann next year, and that would be terrible.

Chicago Fire is an ensemble show anchored by an impressive group of characters we've gotten to know pretty well over the course of six seasons. And as we've seen with Otis (Yuri Sardarov) just a few weeks ago , even the thought of losing one member of the team is every bit soul-crushing. (Raise your hand if you're still emotionally scarred by Shay's [Lauren German] death back in Season 2.) Losing OGs Boden, Hermann or Dawson would not only be devastating, but downright unfathomable.

As the first character cast on the series, Boden has long been considered the heart and soul of Firehouse 51 so it's impossible to imagine not having him around every week. And while Season 6 teased the possibility of him being promoted to commissioner, showrunner Derek Haas previously told TV Guide that his upward move didn't necessarily mean he'd be gone from the series — suggesting he probably wants Boden to stick around just as much as we do.

And what would Fire be without its resident badass, Gabby Dawson? Whether she's fighting fires, kicking drunken frat boys out of her ambulance or saving everyone from a collapsed parking structure, Dawson has etched her spot as an essential member of the crew and one of our favorite people to watch every Thursday. Plus, there's no way the show can break up Dawsey! After all, they aren't just a ship — they are the ship and one of the best things about the series.

You also can't overlook the comedic and sometimes heartbreaking contributions made by Hermann, senior firefighter and resident Truck 81 favorite. Alongside Mouch (Christian Stolte), he is the perfect buffer to the show's more emotional moments. And given how intense things can get at the firehouse, we definitely need him to stick around.

We still don't know whether or not Walker, Raymund or Eigenberg will sign on for Season 7, but I'm holding out hope that they'll eventually come around and strike a deal. With bigger fires to tackle and more drama on the way, we need our team fully intact for Season 7. Besides, the show just wouldn't be the same without them.

I am opposed to anyone leaving.

I'm hoping it means it's going to be awesome. The last one we got no sneak peeks for was the mass shooting and that was a work of art, tbh.
