I think that would have been especially true for Rory. Her being away from Logan on the campaign trail and missing him. Make her really appreciate Logan and miss him. She may see little things that remind her of Logan.

I think he said that to assure fans that they would always be apart of each others life. He probably knew that they would get back together in a relationship, but wasn't 100% sure. So he played it safe?

Besides with as hurt as Logan was, friendship might have been the way to build back up to a relationship. IMO Becoming friends and overcoming that hurt is a MAJOR step.

Matt already said that in the middle of season 7 where he absolutly had no idea about the end of the relationship. Personally he wanted them to be broken up for a series end just because he always had been Fan first when it came to GG and he thought that should be about Lorelai and Rory only in the end. But that he hoped, or at least thought that they still could be friends.

It actually was a interview from the TCA interviews at the beginning of season 7.

Yeah, but he wanted them broken up and they were broken up, so he got his dream ending. That's more than we can say. But I guess as an actor you have a different perspective on the charackters and root for a couple in a very different way.
