The potential series — written and EP’d by Amy Holden Jones (ABC’s Black Box), and Code Black duo Hayley Schore and Roshan Sethi — centers on Devon Pravesh (played by Halt and Catch Fire‘s Manish Dayal), an idealistic young doctor who begins his first day under the supervision of a tough, brilliant senior resident, Conrad Hawkins (played by Czuchry), who pulls the curtain back on all of the good and evil in modern day medicine. Lives may be saved or lost, but expectations will always be shattered.

FOX‘s The Resident is upending the TV medical drama, and Warren Christie is about to shake up The Resident.

The superlative actor guest stars in Monday’s episode as Dr. Jude Silva, a trauma surgeon who has history with Dr. Conrad Hawkins (Matt Czuchry), and makes more than a few waves in the present.

It’s a fantastic piece of casting for the series, because if you’ve seen Warren Christie in past shows like Motive or The Catch, or even in guest-spots such as on FOX’s own The Exorcist, you know that he’s an actor who leaves an impact everywhere he goes.

He’s a professional disruptor, whose characters tend to shake up the status quo, but also because he’s so talented a performer that a series is always made better when he shows up.

What was it about The Resident that had him checking in?

“When I saw how it was dealing with really pulling the curtain back on hospitals and how the big business side of it could be? That was the first thing,” he told us. “Then I saw how it was shot, I saw the people involved. And then I got into the character and what he was all about and I just got hooked. I thought it had incredible potential.

“I’ve never really forayed into medical drama before so I was interested to see that side of the challenge as well,” he continued. “It was really that aspect of it, and the angle the show takes was really different. You’ve got to be different to make your mark nowadays.”

The Resident
Though Monday’s episode will be the first time that Warren Christie appears on The Resident, it’s actually not the first time his character has been there. In fact, he’s technically been around all of the time.

“Jude is actually a trauma surgeon at the hospital. We just haven’t seen him yet,” he revealed, while explaining his history with Matt Czuchry’s character.

“Conrad and I, we will find out, served together in Afghanistan. My character was a surgeon and Conrad was a medic, so there’s a history there that goes beyond this.”

Which leads to a certain challenge for any actor, on any TV show: making the audience believe that two characters have years of history, when the actors don’t. It’s something that Warren Christie is very familiar with, because he’s done it on series like Motive and Chicago Fire. On The Resident, he told us it came easy.

“[Matt and I] were thrown right into it. We had a lot to do on day one and we were fortunate, we got along,” he said. “But we actually work very similarly, so we were talking and working things through. We were figuring it out and we were fortunate enough to quickly build this history.

“Any time you have two characters in a situation with history, it’s tough to sometimes generate. Luckily he and I did what I hope is a good job creating it.

This is a special history. You have two people that served in a very difficult situation and relied on each other,” Warren continued, “so you have to carry that forward. Hopefully it clicks and I think it works, but it’s about working together and looking to each other and making sure we’re hitting all the right spots.”

While Dr. Jude Silva’s history is part of his character, that’s just one aspect of what Warren Christie is about to bring to The Resident. It’s also about what Jude does in the present, and that involves not just Conrad but Conrad’s closest ally and ex, nurse Nicolette Nevin (played by Emily VanCamp).

“I think anyone that’s watched the first couple of episodes knows Conrad and Nic have a fractured relationship, as far as history,” Warren teased. “While Conrad and Jude obviously have a very special relationship and a lot of history together, that’s not necessarily going to stop him from coming in and trying to spend a bit of time with Nic as well.”

I don't like the idea of someone coming between Nic and Conrad, but I am looking forward to seeing his character.
