A State’s Attorney represents the state in all criminal trials in the county. Illinois, Connecticut, Florida, Maryland, North Dakota, South Dakota and Vermont are the only states with a State’s Attorney. However, he or she performs the same role as a District Attorney, Prosecuting Attorney, Commonwealth Attorney or Solicitor. My job as an A.S.A. is basically to back-up the S.A. There are about 9,000 attorneys and 1,500 administrative staff in our office. It’s the second largest in the nation (Los Angeles is the first). Compare that to the size of Lockhart/Gardner and you’ll get an idea of what my first day was like.

Current Cook County State’s Attorney is Glen Childs. Whether you followed the Peter Florrick scandal or not, you’ve probably heard his name before. He’s the guy that took him down. Sidebar: He offered me the job personally. Most people are hired by the state. Anyway, Childs is up for reelection this year. As far as I can tell he doesn’t have much competition. It’s just him against a GOP candidate (and there hasn’t been a Republican in the S.A.’s office for 14 years). Course now that Florrick got his freedom, there are rumors that he’ll run again. My money’s on Childs.

As an A.S.A., I spend most of my time in the courtroom racking up trial experience or back at the office working on paperwork. Workload is much heavier than it was at Lockhart/Gardner (didn’t think that was possible), and the pay isn’t great, but the job has a few perks...well, one really big perk...

I get to go up against Lockhart/Gardner in the courtroom.

Can’t talk about this week’s case cause it’s highly confidential (I’m not even supposed to be involved, but I got connections). What I can disclose is: It’s me against a former colleague of mine. Case is pretty cut and dry. Should be an easy victory and a good way to make a name at the S.A.’s Office. Even if she puts up a fight, we both know I can and will work harder than her. Don’t hold grudges or entertain revenge fantasies, but I admit that I’m going to enjoy this. Especially since this case is just the first of many. I’m going to take down Lockhart/Gardner, one criminal trial at a time.
