I'm torn.

The pilot makes me think they are MEANT TO BE. Which evidently was not the point at all, going by what Josh says.

It sucks because I totally loved them before S3. And then Ryan turned into such a d0uche.

They were meant to be, dammit. Blah.

I know. I hate d0uchebag!Ryan. It should've gotten canceled after the S2 finale.

I need to go to bed. Night Jess! Pleasure ranting with you!

It should have gotten cancelled after S1, IMO. We were better off.

Anytime! Night!

Yeah I hated how they had to change him, but they couldnt do it for Marissa, or chose not to.

Ryan and Marissa had so much potential for interesting stories. Trey was a pretty interesting one; I loved that storyline and the payoff in the finale showed how strong they were as a couple. I was really pissed when the writers squandered all that on Johnny, Sadie, and Volchok. I really wish I knew what the hell Josh was thinking.
I suspect I may never get over the hate I have of how he DID squandered it for the three randoms. Trey was an amazing arc and should have represented the turning point for RM. Up till The End of Innocence and even the Last Waltz, I almost believed it.

I continue to be amazed at how Josh did not take an arc so obvious for RM in S3 i.e dealing with Trey. I feel like if I think of it too much, I want to bash his head against a wall because for FFS, even if he couldn't have them deal with Trey, at least write them differently from the psycho obsessed with Marissa plot and Ryan moving on with slutty randoms

I read a really really good RM fic that dealt with Trey on the Fox boards before - Through the Rain - instead of repeating the Marissa gets distracted with another random plot , the writer had Ryan avoid the issue and turn to help the antagonist because in his subsconscious, he was helping her in the way he couldn't with Marissa. It was good because it showed Ryan being in the wrong FOR A CHANGE.

I swear any given fan fic writer writes RM better than the professional Joshallegedly was.

I truly dislike Ryan SO much at this point, that I cannot get back to any time where I wanted them to be together. Even the idea of Marissa with him is repulsive to me. I don't wish they'd been fixed, I just wish she were still alive.

Like I didn't get the parralism, they changed Ryan to be more of an ass to Marissa but they couldnt change Marissa and she dies. LOL UM... if you couldnt find ways to balance these two individuals out where a relationship is doable and fixable then we have a serious problme lol

Well, if the show was written differently, you'd never reach this point. LOL.

Alas, I did. LOL. And one thing I don't regret is souring on this couple, particularly not after S1. He was not worthy of her after S1. I should've seen that, or paid more attention to it at any rate.

I reject the whole idea that Marissa needed to be changed in order to remain on the show. Obviously a lighter-drama-free OC does not work otherwise it would still be on the air.

She was really the only character to give the show any boom. And I guess Im in the minority when saying that I loved season 3 from a Marissa perspective (well aside from the Johnny stuff). The second half of the season is still to this day up there with my favourite Marissa moments.

I think they ruined RM but Marissa as a single character was made all the more enjoyable.

I think I would have loved her anyway, but I got kind of irritated with the later S2 snow job, like she was some shimmery princess of perfection- she lost ALL her edge. She was cotton candy sticky sweet. I still think the Trey arc is Mischa's best acting, but particularly from 217 right up until the end of 221, Marissa was written as nothing more than Ryan's sugary sweet lapdog. I missed the bitch, the sass, the fire. Mischa still made her the best character on the show, but I didn't appreciate my favorite character getting put into that sugar role in order to be worthy of Ryan.

I agree Sam.

There was nothing wrong with Marissa.

I like my characters complex. and that was Marissa and in extension of that RM but they took that couple to the ground.

I see it like that in hindsight as well. But at the time I was pretty happy that they were giving her a break and making her more carefree. Little did I know that Marissa was being written to the mercy of Ryan since day one.
