I don't think Steven should have been vilified by his siblings for writing the book- he was as traumatized as they were and had a right to process it in the way he saw fit.

But what he did to his wife was terrible and she should not have taken him back.

I mostly wanted Luke to survive because Nell tried so hard to save him, more than I actually cared about adult Luke, lol.

Shirley was...a hell of a thing. LOL. That scene where it was revealed who James Lafferty was, was great. But again, if I were her husband, I would not have taken her back. LOL.

I kind of feel bad for the dad, where it turns out he really did love his kids and it appears he may have sacrificed himself to let them live? On the flip side, I'm side-eyeing the mom- I sort of accepted she was tormented by spirits when she was alive, but it didn't seem dying helped her AT ALL and she was still trying to kill the kids to keep them in the house with her.

Nell was my favorite and she kinda broke my heart. After her, I think I liked Theo the best.

Same here and I do think he sacrificed himself at the end too. Wasn't a huge mum of the mum for trying to kill her kids to keep them in the house

I'm actually not sure any of the siblings but Shirley HATED Steven for it. Nell didn't even seem angry until the end of her life, Luke was too high, and Theo seemed at best moderately annoyed (although I was expecting her to have a bigger role "that night" than it turned out she had? She didn't ultimately see any more than Steven did, at least through her own eyes. Nell and Luke definitely got the brunt of that night, with their mom trying to feed them rat poison and having to watch Abigail die, and I actually think the creepiest kid POV after that WAS Steven, with that haunting shot of his mother's terrifying run after them as his father carried him down the hall).

Yes, James was very effective in that scene, and arguably had more chemistry with Elizabeth Reaser than the actor who played Shirley's husband.

Hugh said he promised Olivia something in exchange for opening the door to save their kids, and next thing you know, he's dead as a result of taking all his heart medication at once. I think he offered to kill himself and stay in the house with her in exchange for freeing the kids.

Incidentally, I do think Olivia committed suicide- the Poppy ghost never actually touched her in that final moment. Whereas Nell was clearly terrified and trying to hold onto the railing. The only one who clearly did not commit suicide in my mind was Nell (well, and obviously poor Abigail).

I think Shirley was the only one who had issues with it for the most part, which is the rest of them took his money too.

I wouldn't be completely surprised if Olivia committed suicide

I was surprised myself about James, lol, but it was part of what made that scene so effective. I was actually thinking he was a ghost, and he was someone Shirley killed somehow, maybe in an accident. So the reveal ended up surprising me.

It was kind of disappointing that Olivia clarified it hadn't been her with Hugh all those years, but just his reflection of her, because I liked that Olivia better than the one in the house, lol. Maybe the house consumed her, and death didn't free her. Nell's take on her death definitely was NOT "waking up from the nightmare of life."

That's definitely true

And yet the way it was described, I wasn't surprised. Shirley was incredibly repressed, and when she found an outlet, she took it. At the same time, she wasn't amoral, so it kept haunting her at the back of her mind.

It's probably not surprising that as damaged as all the Crain kids were, Shirley and Steven were the most emotionally closed off and therefore the most destructive to their romantic partners. They had the clearest memories of their mother, and had her the longest, and got completely twisted by her loss.
