You people never remember the plot! LOL. MISCHA'S Ethel marries Teddy and then when he dies, marries the dark haired guy. It's Shirley's Ethel who ultimately seems to have some kind of connection with Hitler who by that point doesn't look Hitler.

I really don't understand the plot, it seems. Not just the romance, but is her true love the guy who dies or Hitler? Like, who is this story about about?

Her FIRST love, the one where she has a choice between all three guys, is Teddy. I think the idea is that, since Teddy is dead, she'd have had more of a shot at a happier life with Jack, but instead did what Teddy wanted her to do in the event of his death and married Chuck. Jack is sort of her second love, I think. Sometimes you get more than one in a lifetime, and Ethel picked the wrong second one.

I dont think its about her finding her way back to Jack because I don't think she's ever actually with Jack until the very end of the movie.

The whole movie is centered around what the ring represents and I think Ethel tries to honour that for as long as she can. The title of the movie seems to indicate that Ethel eventually gets past letting the ring dictate her life.

But yeah, I agree. I think she let youthful promises to her first love who died (and therefore her relationship with him and promises to him stayed rooted in basically one step beyond childhood) dictate the next few decades of her life, and by the end she 'closes the ring' and finally decides to live her life on her terms.
