True, which would not have been easy for The OC (although they potentially could have backtracked in the beginning of S4, after Josh saw the outcry, since Marissa going still isn't necessarily proof she's dead, lol, but I don't think Josh took the backlash seriously until it was accompanied by such a serious ratings drop).
