Wonderland on Wearside

A film crew have confirmed they will be coming North to shoot a Hollywood blockbuster this year.

Malice In Sunderland - a modern day reworking of Lewis Carroll's classic story Alice in Wonderland - was originally due to be made on Wearside in 2003, with Kelly Osbourne in the lead role.

Telly stunner Mischa Barton - star of Channel 4's teen drama series The OC - will swap Los Angeles for Wearside by replacing Kelly, rocker daughter of Ozzy Osbourne, as the film's star.

The OC was axed last month due to falling audiences and it's widely held that its demise is down to Mischa quitting the show last year.

The glamorous TV star - who was born in London but raised in the US - has become hot property since leaving the series and has been snapped up to star in no less than four movies, so it's a real coup that she'll be coming North.

The original filming plans were put on hold due to lack of finance but London-based Future Films have verified that they have joined forces with US firm Pierce/Williams Entertainment to bring the contemporary tale to the big screen.

It was originally due to be a joint Irish-German effort, with What's The Story and MagicWorx GmbH both co-producing.

Malice in Sunderland follows the fortunes of American film student Alice who is hit by a taxi in London. She then finds herself disorientated in Sunderland, where she ventures through a macabre underworld of characters reminiscent of those made popular in Carroll's tale.

The film is set to be directed by Simon Fellows, who has previously made one feature film, the low-budget Cloudbuster in 1999.

The screenplay has been penned by Jayson Rothwell and is also due to star Laura Harring - whose breakthrough role came in David Lynch's Mulholland Drive - and young actor Ryan Gosling. . . the star of Stay and Remember The Titans.

A shooting date has yet to be firmed up but Sunderland is gearing up to welcome the cast and crew later this year.

Albert Martinez-Martin of Futedure Film said: "We are casting the film at the moment and financially packaging it, so our shooting dates are not confirmed yet."

All the actors listed have now been removed from the IMDB.

And I just checked the boards, and someone said that Charlie Hunnam is rumoured to be cast in the film. No link to an article though.
