But it's less important that Nashville Star place its unique stamp on American culture than that it have a cultural impact at all. It's difficult to speculate where American Idolwould be if Taylor Hicks or Reuben Studdard had won season one instead of eventual mega-star Kelly Clarkson, but it is reasonable to question whether viewers would have flocked to the show during its second season had the winner become a one-and-done flameout rather than an instant commercial force.

I completely agree. I'm really happy that Kelly achieved the success she did. I think it would have been different if someone else had won season 1. Maybe AI wouldn't be as big now.

ITA. I think a lot of contestants go out to the auditions in hopes of having the success that Kelly had. Some winners have been lucky enough. But Kelly's talent, personality, and passion has gotten her to where she is today.

And I think everyone that has come after her appreciates it. She really set the bar that high, and made people realize something could actually become of them if they went on the show

If you recall, last year Kelly was involved in MTV's Staying Alive Campaign (raising awareness about HIV and such). Dailymotion has 3 videos of Kelly discussing 3 sexually-related topics. You may have to sign up in order to view them (due to their sexual topics, I believe they are restricted to people who are logged in to the site) But they are really interesting videos and Kelly's very candid about sex and how she believes it's an important thing to get tested if you are sexually active. She also discusses how young people view sex, and the emotional attachement that comes with being intimate like that with someone. Cool videos.
