KC Lyrics Discussion #4 - 'I know that I've got issues, but you're pretty messed up too.'

This thread is to discuss, dissect, enjoy all things related to Kelly's lyrics, her songwriting process, etc.

Yes, but they're different types of breakup songs. Like "Cry" is about how you feel when you find out someone has betrayed you-it's very intense and sad. And "Already Gone" is about a relationship I had where I just wasn't as into the other person as they were into me, and realizing that it would hurt them less to let them go rather than carry on being with them. I hope someone would do the same for me.

Reba has written a couple of songs, you know in the past, she's not a big writer. Kelly writes every day, so yeah she writes a lot of songs.

Do you hook them up with other established writers?
With Kelly, no, actually what we do is we'll take tracks from writers and she'll write melody and lyrics and that kind of thing, but she's very much an independent she likes to be alone and write.

Explain what tracks are to everybody, are these just like demo things, or fully furnished things where she can just sing karaoke over them and release them.
Well I don't think you'd want to do that, but yeah it's like a demo without a vocal.

So people come in with just the instrumental parts, and she adds like a vocal and a melody over them, sort of like a co-write?
Right, sometimes or maybe, that's a co-write, or maybe she comes up with the melody and lyric and she goes to someone and they add the track.

Glad you like it! I definitely wanted to use some of the new lyrics for the title

I know I mentioned this in another thread earlier this week but I thought of bringing it in here as well. I like hearing Kelly tell the story of how when she first received MLWSWY the lyrics did not fit her at all and she did not like them. I like the fact that she went back to Max and Luke and basically told them that this wasn't anything she'd ever say, and that they re-wrote the lyrics to fit more with Kelly's personality and wishes.

Even though she did not write the song herself, it makes it feel like it's a little piece of her a bit more I find.

The lyrics are definitely cheesy, but they are growing on me a lot too. My friend made a comment yesterday about how the song was good, but the lyrics were cheesy. And I was just thinking that Kelly can never win, can she?

With the awesome lyrics on MD, she didn't get the recognition, and with these cheesy lyrics, people actually start focusing on the lyrics.

Oh well- the song is still doing awesome, so that's the end of my rant.

I know, right?

But I guess you can't expect too much out of a song penned by Dr. Luke and Max Martin. They are definitely not great lyricist. That is why I love Kelly's BTHE over their SUBG.

But the good thing about the lyrics for MLWSWY is that they are very catchy and relatable. I think that will appeal to radio listeners.

I agree about BTHE over SUBG. But I think they were trying so hard to make the next SUBG, in popularity, that the lyrics were bound to be somewhat cheesy.

They are relatable though, I agree. My friend that I was talking to said that as well, that she could at least relate to them.

I think that's the main thing about them.

And perhaps Dr. Luke and Max Martin's big focus was on the music and making it upbeat and radio friendly. In the process the lyrics may have suffered some neglect.

But overall, I am really starting to like them more. Obviously they are not Shakespeare...

But I'm liking them.

There's something I love about these lyrics today...

They lend themselves to SO many puns when it comes to article headlines regarding the massive success of the song. I love it!

I think MLWSWY is one of those songs where it doesn't matter what the lyrics are, I mean you could sub them for anything and you'd probably still sing along...
